What's wrong with my new bass? :(
Sarah5string replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
What's the set up like? Could be fret buzz coming through?
It does have a touch of fret buzz if you really pummel it... but the buzzing comes through even without the fretbuzz. -
Took my new bass to practice today. It's a Dean metalman explorer. Something's not right with it. The low end notes were very distorted and badly buzzing when playd, especially at high volume. It's got a brand new battery in it (It's active) and it wasn't the amp as it's done the same on my amp and the one at practice studio, plus I played my 5 string through both amps with no distortion or buzzing. Any ideas?

I'm selling my OLP to pay off my recent splurge (ie new Dean explorer! lol) here's the details. OLP Traben TB4 4 String. Metallic Red Mirror flame pickguard Medium action and feels great to play, really poppy and funky. Great condition as hardly used now I've got 2 others! some random blurb from musicians friend...
OLP partnered with Traben to develop a bass that captures the unique, artistic chrome-plated style that has attracted players worldwide. The chrome pickguard has a flashy custom flame shape that complements the sleek and balanced body. The light weight and heavily contoured shape make it a comfortable gigging bass. The metallic red finish perfectly accents the chrome flames. OLP TB4 4-String Bass Features: Chrome pickguard in custom flame shape Sleek and balanced body Light weight and heavily contoured shape Metallic red finish perfectly accents the chrome flames
Looking for £100 ono. We're in Staffordshire.
Left it plugged in din't'cha?
No actually But then again the current battery is about 6 months old and it's had regular use to can't complain too much really. -
Spent a while playing with my new Dean 4 string... came to play a song that required my lucious 5 string so swapped over, plugged in, turned on..... and nothing. No sound, no life... just.... nothing.... ................. When I came to and picked myself up off the floor I started panicking. We'd been on holiday the past week, had someone broken in knocked my beautiful baby about and then stood it back up next to my amp???? Had it been knocked over without me knowing?? What if it was broken? Dead? Left to decay next to my amp like some abandoned orphan..... it was all too much... fighting back the tears I unscrewed the back panel...... nothing was astray? No wires had been maliciously cut by unknown burglars, everything seemed to be in order.. I twiddled with wires.. I poked random bits of metal, hoping to ignite a small spark of life from by precious baby.. Nothing. But then I remembered something... a small crucial piece of information that was the fine line between bass life and death... and so I said to myself... ............... ''FFS Sarah, it's an active bass you muppet... change the bloody battery...'' D'oh! *Sigh*
When you need 2 or more credit cards to obtain it it's too much, what you've done there is perfectly acceptable. If I could find an explorer shaped fiver I'd be on the phone to my landlord making excuses in no time. Gather round my children and I shall tell you a story..... Once apon a time in the late 90's, my guit*rist at the time called me on the telephone - which was the communication device of choice at the time. He proceded to inform me that Academy of Sound (later to become Sound Control, then more recently fall on it's a*se) had a five (yes five!!) string Ibanez bass for £550 in stock. Now bear in mind that this was a simpler time, when Korn ruled the NuMetal airwaves and my beard was trying hard but not quite making the cut. I promptly got myself to the aforementioned music shop (if anyone here is familiar with the Norwich branch, this was when it was on the other side of Anglia Square - before it was a candle shop or whatever it is now!) and tried out their nice shiney Ibanez Ergodyne 5 string. As I mentioned earlier, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber and such bands were just beginning to take the heavy music scene in the death grip that they would hold for all of about ten minutes, and I was seventeen (give or take, my memory isn't what it used to be kids!), so the decision was pretty much made before I even entered the shop. I tried the bass on for size - it certainly did have five strings! I thought it best to consult the local cash machine for advice - IT WAS PAYDAY, so I could have the bass but wouldn't have a great deal of wedge to go out on the lash with until the same time a month later. This didn't matter as I'd have a brand spanking five string bass and therefore be the envy of at least half a dozen of my friends until that day. Job Jobbed - or so I thought until I'd gotten as far as the aforementioned Guit*rist's house on the way home. His mum asked if I was sure I could afford the bass I had in my (big, strong, masculine) arms and I explained the maths to her..... right up to the point where I remembered that being as it was infact the very day my paycheque had gone into my bank, my housekeeping for the coming month was yet to be payed to my own mothers bank account. *rses I thought. Here's the moral: I had a tenner to last me a month when I was a teenager - Ten years later and I've still got my first five string bass. Winner. Go for it Sarah. Tune in next week when I'll tell you all about how I promised to pay my mum back for my first proper bass (second one I was to own) and never did! (I pay my own way in life nowadays, honest!!!) p.s. I've got somewhere close to ten basses now (can't count properly 'cos I'm half cut) and I only play 2 plus 2 back-ups on a regular basis, and I'm just small fry on this forum!!!!
Tell me more oh wise one -
Well they do add to the rock vibe and unlike most knobs you can even see where they are set.
Very true.... wouldn't be the same without them would it? lol -
Just finished watching Ghost Rider on Sky Movies and up pops a bass thats got skull knobs with flaming eyes - how spooky is that.
Funnily enough I don't like the skulls..... but it'd be a bit wrong to change them wouldn't it? -

D'oh! -
Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh... I've gone and done something a bit stupid..... I've gone and bought this.. I didn't need it... I couldn't afford it... I've already got 2 basses... But it's sexy as hell and sounds amazing.. Just don't ask me about the fact it cost £275 and went on the credit card..
-
Awww that's great. I'm trying to get my girls into bass... but at 3 and 18 months it's hard to keep their interest in anything other than cbeebies for long!

Anchoring on the bridge. Evidence below...

Latest in the saga... the venue have now offered us either fri the 29th or sat the 30th, support or headlining (Holy crap.. headlining??? We've not done one gig yet... but I digress..). Now to me this seems like a prime opportunity especially as it's a fri or saturday night at a well know city, 200 capacity, rock/music pub... we've got 8 practices at least (we normally do one a week) in which to get a 1/2 hr set tight. Have texted the guitarist who flat out refused as the other is at glastonbury... will keep you updated.

Me. *runs away and hides*

For the record when we play well we're really good... so it's not as if we're one of these s**t poser bands who think they're the next metallica... but it seems that they don't have any faith in what we/they can do!
-
Yeah I got that But what specifically do they think is the problem, what is not ready? Once your identify that you can fix it.
Well they think we're rubbish and will get laughed off stage. It's ridiculous as they're not seeing any further than 'we're rough on some of the covers' and won't think objectively about what can be achieved with a bit of hard work.
-
So what is the problem? and do you mean that one guitarist won't play gigs or rehearse before the end of August? If he's not got a very good reason I'd say that was a resignation ... Just another thought: the drummer is often the key to being gig-tight. Bands are often spolied by drummers faffing about between tunes, waiting for others to be ready etc .. Just go ta-da!!!... at the end of one song and then count in the next one. That way your guitarists can relax and build on the foundations you are providing.
The problem is 3 of us think we'll be ready, the other 2 don't and refuse to play gigs until they feel 'ready'. The drummer is confident we'll do it, as are me (bassist) and the singer. It's literally the 2 guitarists.
-
Tell you what.. wish I hadn't bothered trying to sort something out.. all it's done is upset the apple cart with the 2 guitarists now hardly speaking to me (it seems) and the rest of us who do want to gig kind of just shrugging our shoulders and saying 'wtf??'
You should be using all 4 fingers!
As I said... depends what I'm doing

I mainly use my index and ring... but occasionally my middle.. just depends what I'm doing.
