  1. Married to my cousin, is Laurence. Lovely chap.
  2. Will absolutely second the feedback here for Ashdown (happily still servicing an original ABM 400 for not very much cost at all, amongst other things) and Barefaced (Alex has always been really thorough and crazily detailed and informative on any responses to email questions or queries). Actually, Guitar Guitar (Birmingham is my local one) have also always been great on the occasions I’ve had cause to visit too. The Little Guitar Shop in Birmingham I’ll also big up. They have some tasty stock from time to time and have done a few bits of tech work for me that have been bang on.
  3. Wowzer. My ‘76 is in about 14.5% of the condition this looks to be in. Very, very cool bass. GLWTS!
  4. Suggest also seeing if the shop has one of those McCartney ‘Bassman’ stickers. If so, stick it on his bass and add a question mark at the end. 😬😬😬
  5. F.E.A.R. For Everyone A Refund?
  6. Came here to say this. An absolutely cracking looking bass otherwise, but that J pickup makes me sad.
  7. Not tempted to go with black screws? looks great regardless though!
  8. Have you decided what type of uke you’re going for - soprano, concert, tenor etc? I dabble a bit and have a Lanikai LU-21 tenor which sounds pretty good to my ears and they don’t break the bank (up to and around £100). They do, or at least did, those in soprano and concert models too. Very much depends what “cheap” means though. You can get far cheaper, of course, but I’ve no idea if there’s anything decent in that bracket. PS - this may possibly be better being moved to ‘Other Instruments’ in terms of the likelihood of more responses.
  9. The cynic in me wonders if the about turn had anything to do with the mention of the studio in question. BD aren’t all that far from me, though I must admit I’ve never visited when in the vicinity, partly due to reading so many less than great accounts. These issues may be in the minority, but there does seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence. Enough to keep me away anyway. If I want attitude that results in me handing over a wedge of cash I’ll chat to my kids…
  10. Steve McDonald has been playing these with Melvins now for a couple of years or so as his main basses. It’s a good enough recommendation for me. Plus, there’s no three point bridge on them. Big tick for me!
  11. Phil Anselmo - most things he says and does. Idiot.
  12. The need for light as above plus increasing discomfort from arthritis in the cold. Otherwise…
  13. Wow. What an absolute throbber. Said guitarist was lucky to not have you crack either the “improper” or “proper” bass off his bonce.
  14. Cheers for that and yeah, the Bright Onion one I use has isolated channels.
  15. Weird I was just browsing on here and a thread this old is revived! Anyhow, it did a great job, though I took it off my board a couple of months back as it started generating a load of noise through my rig. Not had the chance to properly check what’s caused it yet, but currently alternating between a TC Sub n’ Up and a Digitech Whammy Ricochet in the meantime, both of which do a decent job, though can’t do the simultaneous 5th…
  16. Seems you’ve dealt with it perfectly. Hell, you even took the time to properly consider it rather than jumping straight to it during or after the rehearsal. It’s a rubbish thing to have to boot someone, and it’s rubbish to be told it too. All you can do is be straight, non-emotional and non-confrontational, which it sounds like you were. How that’s then taken by the other party isn’t on you. Hope you get someone in who works for you all without much hassle.
  17. Different deal with what I do but I’d be lost without a split signal. I’m in a two piece bass/drums band so have a bass and ‘guitar’ thing going on through my rig. My rig is a Crown power amp and Hilbish Design Beta preamp. As both the power and preamps are two channel I use one channel for ‘bass’ and one for ‘guitar’ (which has an octave up and fuzz in the pedal chain). Each channel goes through its own cab, and I switch between either or both channels from my board. Can’t say either channel is ‘clean’ though. The signal gets hairy to blown out once the drive dial on the pre is cranked a little. That’s Sunn clones for you though…
  18. Lovely stuff! Thanks for sharing the story and pics.
  19. Kudos for the choice of a Cherry Poppin’ Daddies tune for the demo!
  20. I hate that phrase with an absolute passion. And everyone that uses it.
  21. Likely would’ve continued with rounds only but flats came as stock on the JMJ I bought. I like them (after a bit of oddness over how weird they felt initially). I have since taken them off in favour of rounds again though, but that’s purely due to flats not giving me what I wanted in my band. Will get the flats on another one of my basses some time soon I reckon.
  22. Muzz Skillings rarely gets the props he deserves for his playing on the first two Living Colour albums. Nice little bass solo on this one off Vivid. Solo around 2:20.
  23. Sounds interesting, but I also don’t think they did fretless at any point, though I’m by no means an authority. Suppose it could have been a custom order though? Really rather curious to see a pic! Re: Gary Tallent of the ESB, he’s had and played a bunch of Longhorn-style basses over the years, from Danos through Jerry Jones to custom jobs I think so likewise, if he has used a fretless one it was likely bespoke.
