Trying to put myself in the drummer’s shoes, that sounds awful.

Honesty is the best and only policy that works, as others have said. Be kind, open and keep it fairly short. And, hard as it can be at times to find a decent drummer, this can’t come into it. Either they agree and stick (pun intended) around, they don’t agree but stick around for the greater good or they walk.

I’ve taken a spare for a long long time, and have had cause to use the spare maybe three or four times ever. For me (though I don’t gig often these days) it’s still worth it for peace of mind, regardless of the very low likelihood of needing to use it. Think that comes down largely to your personality. I’d be fretting (pun very much intended) the whole night if I didn’t have the spare with me.

Fender Japan Wasted Youth Mustang Bass out tomorrow...
mr4stringz replied to stonevibe's topic in General Discussion
The only thing GAS related here is their awful bloody beer. -
They’ve stopped making the JC in black?

Can I use regular strings on a short scale (Mustang)?
mr4stringz replied to ots's topic in Bass Guitars
Another ‘will be fine’ from me. The JMJ Mustangs come supplied with standard length Fender flats. -
IMO the fact that you’re asking the question rather than just buying it actually answers it for you.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2023?
mr4stringz replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I’ve not bought much at all year by previous standards, but the best is definitely this. Epiphone Vintage Pro T-Bird. Stupendously good for the cash (especially second hand with a case, as this was). I’ve replaced the knobs for black/chrome and, when I get round to it, will get a black scratchplate on it too. Worst purchase? I’ve yet to find a use for the Stone Deaf PDF-2 pedal that I picked up to try with my octave up sounds. Nowt wrong with the pedal, just not what I’m looking for. -
That’s the fella! 😬

If you’re there in time give the bassist of the support (Dawn After Dark) a wave for me, he’s a mate of mine. Suitably festive too as he’s got a grumpy Santa vibe about him.

In my experience it’s absolutely worth persevering with. I’d be useless most days without Pilates. Actually, come to think of it I am fairly useless anyway, but you get my point!

Was in my favourite local tonight (The Fountain Inn in Walsall) and caught a set from Big Special. Free gig, raising money for local homelessness charities. They were giving away a load of Christmas trees no questions asked to anyone who needed one but may be a few quid short. One of the band used to work in the pub a few years back. There’s giving back for you. Top work, lads.

10 or 15 years or so ago my list would have been massive. I’ve seen the light on much of that stuff though and/or mellowed. Now there’s just - Any black bass with a black scratchplate that doesn’t have black screws. Any 5 string Fender Precision. It just looks wrong. Those stupid neon green strings (DRs I think).

Saw them support Napalm Death once I think. It’s also possibly given the OP an idea for their next thread.
-
Now there’s a player that always has epic tones in whichever band he’s playing in at any given moment.

Unless you’re really set on separates (and given your fairly tight financial boundaries) there are often real bargains to be had from older Ashdown combos. You may be able to snag one of their ABM combos for that if you’re ‘right place right time’ lucky. You might even feel you don’t even want/need to upgrade quickly thereafter or at all if you hunt and buy wisely now . They’re not lightweight but you can always stick a set of heavy duty castors on to assist a bit with that.
-
Makes even less sense given they have the facility to order online to collect from store.

Hey. Afraid not, it’s a fair bit further forward towards the neck on the Dano. They’re fun basses though for sure and certainly a little different to the norm, though I bought this one largely for my 11 year old to mess about on.

Realised earlier on today that I didn’t think this thread had been updated. Worthy of an update though as their second album was released a couple of months back with as little promotion and fanfare as the first. It’s as good as the first too, if not better to my ears.

Prolapsed L4 and L5 discs 20+ years ago have left me with pretty crap long term back issues. Gigs are once in a blue moon for me these days (probably fortunately) so we largely just play in a shared lockup where our gear is pretty much set up and good to go. Disappeared down a rabbit hole of a cocktail of Tramadol and alcohol a good few years ago that ended up as successful a treatment plan as you’d expect. Fortunately I saw the other side of it and now manage it largely through Pilates exercises and walking as much as I’m able stop me from being constantly in the worst state I sometimes reach to be honest. That said, I’m only a ‘wrong’ sneeze or twist away from a nightmare time. Largely using Mustangs and BF cabs plus having a real diamond of a best mate of a drummer helps me out like you wouldn’t believe too.

Bands you forgot and recently rediscovered
mr4stringz replied to SteveXFR's topic in General Discussion
That’s a shame. It’s been many a year since they’ve done my neck of the woods in Birmingham and I’ve often travelled to see them. I’ll miss them this time as the closest to me is Nottingham, but I’m already at a gig that night. -

Great bands, though I don’t think they’ve ever dropped out of rotation for me. Helmet in their heyday were one of my favourite bands of all time. The current iteration of the band are still pretty great and have a few dates in the UK in December. And Tad? Inhaler is one of my favourite albums ever. Not that they put a foot wrong with anything they released really. But, in answer to your question, I hadn’t listened to the album Shame by Brad in a lot of years until quite recently. In my late teens and early twenties it was a late night staple and it’s still great now, I’d just forgotten that it was for the longest time.
