Doug Wimbish - why does he bother with bass amps?
Dood replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
Doug is a superb bass player and maybe watching video clips of him doing say, clinics or demos on the stands at music shows, then it's not surprising that he's going to be 'doing musical theatrics'. The average trade show audience won't be interested in him playing root 8th notes to a I V vi IV. Take a look at Doug's discography. He's a very busy, in demand session bassist. Recordings that vastly out number his video clips. But hey, when the time comes, well, more is more . Challenge and be challenged. -
I think this is a brilliant and kind gesture iKay. Good on you! BassChat is awesome because of folk like you!

I love Reaper. I especially like that you can try it out for free, with no limitations whatsoever for 30 days, but if you are like me, you'll have decided in about 30 minutes that you like it and I stumped up the cash straight away. Many years later I still use it, even for Pro releases. Cockos Reaper has a great user community and forum as well as a whole host of add-ons and built in plug ins. I, for fun have completely reskinned my DAW too. It looks like Logic Pro X! (There's nothing wrong with the default look by the way, it's just that I am actually trying to learn how to use Logic too ha!)

For sale is my Dingwall Combustion 5 string. Since I have owned it from brand new, it has been upgraded to meet my Dingwall AB1 bass. You can not buy a Combustion in this specification. The original specifications are: Alder Body. Maple Neck. EMG Active Preamplifer. Dingwall FD3n Neodymium pickups. Four way selector switch. Ability to make this bass an NG2 as the pickup slots are routed at the factory under the pick guard. It now features: Official Hipshot USA ultralight tuning keys instead of licensed versions. (£120) Black hardware all over verses standard chrome (£60) Dunlop Dual strap buttons (£?) Dingwall SF2 Super Fatty II pickups!!! (£200) A pair of roller string trees to aid string changes. I'd also mention tuning stability using these, but the bass was always rock solid for days anyway! Things to note: Where I removed the old string retainer there is a small drilled hole where the screw came out. There is a small 2mm wide dip on the lower edge of the bass. It's the same colour as the paint anyway so pretty much unnoticeable. I've tried to photograph it but I can't see it in the picture lol. I have moved the rear strap button downward, therefore there is a hole (that you could put something in I suppose - another button or even a neat screw to fill the space. For these reasons the price is marked well below that of it's worth. The original pickups are not included in the sale. Original hardware not available. (Bass is pictured with string retainer not rollers here) Collection is of course going to be the wisest idea and a cup of tea will be forthcoming Payment by Bank Transfer. - However, should you wish to have the bass shipped to you, payment will be made by bank transfer, no PayPal. I will ensure the instrument is safely packed in a soft case inside a shipping carton. It will be marked as Fragile with full details of address to be sent to. The arranging and shipping of the instrument will be up to the buyer and thus any claims insurance claims for loss or damage by the courier will be the responsibility of the buyer. No returns. (Photographs of the instrument and case and packaging will be made prior to collection. I can provide the necessary details for the buyer to arrange the shipment. Don't offer me less than £1000 heh heh! There's about £1300 worth of bass here already! Should I find a way to find £1000, this bass will be removed from sale. I've struggled as this bass should be my keeper, but financial situation has made me put it up for sale.

Have you received your letter regarding customs charges yet?

I love the juxtaposition of two fiercely powerful valve amplifiers with HT's that could fry people instantly playing cabaret music..

Using the thumb fingerstyle....rant content!
Dood replied to oldbass's topic in Theory and Technique
My post exactly. I recall watching early videos of The Shadows playing (Cliff Richard brought one of the first Stratocasters in to the country for Hank Marvin? I think) and right there on bass duties, right hand thumb and tug bar. i use my thumb a lot. I also play electric guitar and lots of acoustic too, so I suppose there’s a cross over of techniques anyway. My take is simple and I say it to all my students. If I thought that playing my instrument with a dustbin lid would make the sound or convey what it was I was trying to do musically, then I would. Don’t be limited because something isn’t what everyone expects to be right. -
Philips EL6471 might just take the biscuit but I wouldn't wanna take one to a gig!

Yes, but have you seen how long the lead is all the way to the service provider? lol

and if his plectrum is of a sufficiently light gauge, then the give in it will act as a compressor too. Maybe if his fingers are really squishy then that might soften the movement of the plectrum too. or if his thumb is a bit on the weak side.. oh dear I'm going cross-eyed... lol In all seriousness though, something to point out regarding valve amplifiers which appears to be a fairly common misconception. Just because an amp has valves in it, it does not mean that the signal is being compressed. Valves have the capability to compress, but the two are not inextricable.

@ped @charic, Right now, you are gods! It's sometimes hard for 'normal folk' to know how much work has to go in to the kinda updates that we've been experiencing over the last couple of months. I just want to say how incredible you guys have been to pull off this feat by yourselves. I applaud you, I kneel in your presence!!! Well done, seriously, well done!!
-
Which is the place it will stay the longest in the whole journey, sadly.

I'm also pleased about his reference to "Up the dusty end", "North of the border" I call it too and often make references and jokes about it in my own videos just.. because! Likewise I didn't see what was on the pedal board in terms of anything other than that which was obvious first glimpse.

I get the feeling that the thing that 'folk' don't like about Compressors is that in conversations like these it can be seen as 'you use one so you must have a problem with your technique'. My mate Andy used to see all sorts of internet nonsense over his playing because he uses a hair band as a string mute on his guitar. People losing their sh*t over it. Which is odd considering he's had several albums out, toured all over the world and is one of the best online tutors out in Guitar world.. lol Anyway, I digress. It's ok to say "I use one but my technique sucks anyway", but it's not cool for someone else to tell you (or make you feel) that your technique sucks.. The innocent compressor divides people unnecessarily. Maybe a bit like those conversations about those who think that real bass players don't use a plectrum... or Jaco only needed.. oh gawd...

Exciting!

Congratulations!!!!

I don't have personal experience using 'lower end' monitors for FRFR say in conjunction with the Helix (and bass), but in general, unless you are playing at a volume that isn't pushing them at all, I'd steer clear for handling the transients of bass guitar. (Unless you are enjoying the sound of a brickwall limiter and an HPF set at 100hz possibly!)
-
Yup, that has indeed happened. Thank you for the tag chap! @Sonic_Grooveyou'll have to wait for my full review I'm afraid, but I can hint that I think it is very well made and the features on board through our studio set up demonstrated that they are worthy of my thumbs up. Works great in to an amp, power amp or PA!

I've had the utter pleasure of playing Doug's actual Spector and yes, it definitely does have a Jazz neck profile (as do the signature models yup) and OMG what an instrument!
-
I also meant to say that you can leave LT in the case. or there's a ply pedal board that lifts out. I've fixed my LT and pedals to the ply using the bicycle chain method and the whole thing stays in the case all the time. I lift the lid off and I am ready to go!
-
Oh, you could buy the 'large' case instead that I think is still ok for LT.
-
I wanted to fit a few extra pedals and stuff in so I bought one of these: http://www.spider-engineering.co.uk/industry/product.asp?item=spider-guitar-effects-pedal-board-flight-case-extra-large-7628-4748 It's heavy but bloody brilliant!
