1.
Yeah, watched it this morning - very interesting!
Ah! Thank you!
  2.
Looks very nice Dood, thanks for the recommendation! I was wondering if I could somehow find the readies for a Thunderfunk TFB800-B2, but with duty and tax, it's about 2 grand! The B|Amp looks great though. I will investigate further.
No problem! I've reviewed the B|Amp, but I haven't had my hands on the Forté yet which promises to be very good too. Here's some bloke who seems to like it a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHoNNtuOpsc
  3.
That's the most interesting thing I have read in this topic. You wont thank me for saying that my first response to "Notation Dyslexia" was to type LOBBOX! but as I read on I realised that you seem to have a better appreciation of the very nub of this topic than any other member who has contributed. Respect. There are only a few teachers who I genuinely respect and today I added your name to the list.
I'd have laughed out loud to lobbox (Not so much that auto-correct has changed my typing three times). Thank you, for your reply though. I'm genuinely touched. I guess I just seek in a way that I always want to know 'how things work'. Maybe that's why I love my job reviewing guitar gear as well. Aside from the magazine, I've been very fortunate to work, in-depth, on some music based projects (some award winning) that I have delivered to those with a range of 'needs'. I've delivered music projects to those with Autism, or physical handicaps; I've presented clinics to staff members for using music as a communicative device and I've worked with sufferers of Dementia. We developed a program in conjunction with the education department of a very famous concert hall establishment. The latter not feeling like work, but a very emotional journey and understanding of the effects of a range of mental health diseases, which had a huge impact on me. I suppose in short, I find myself questioning and analysing the way that I teach all the time - and of course with that, trying to understand how people learn. Maybe there's a Masters in that somewhere!
  4. I clicked on the link and the default instrument is perfect lol.
  5. People are greedy. Greed is the fuel of the nation.
  6. One thing that really hasn't been touched on here at all is that there is such a learning difficulty known as Notation Dyslexia. Much like Dyslexia which is more understood in reading and writing it manifests itself in the same ways. As an example, even with proper reading glasses (if needed) "symbols seem to move on the lines" to quote one of my students. This is even more of a problem when looking at notation where lots of information is crammed on to one page. Even for some there's an extended moment of trying to decipher the key of B major from E major - long before starting the piece. For this reason and many of the advantages noted above I teach combined Notation and Tablature. (As well as individually). I actually teach methods to help speed up Tablature reading. As an example and certainly not a description of my entire approach, I demonstrate how to improve by correcting the mistakes (covering music theory) and then making it more efficient to play (physical understanding of the instrument). Since Tablature tends not to have a set standard, other than borrowing symbols from 'standard notation', it makes it easy to manipulate, much like the way that many write crib sheets in the absence of sight reading. This has worked particularly well; some of my students have gone from the class room to gigs over in Europe. Finally, when it comes to teaching, my approach is entirely different from many, some of which I have shadowed and cringed as students have become embarrassed and tangled. I guess what I want to add here is that I guess there are more ways than one to crack that initial egg and they should all be explored and we should always keep learning. Even for those who think they know it all and are somehow better than others. Stay humble, stay positive.
  7. The TC Spectracomp is amazing - I also own the TC Nova Dynamics which I also adore. So much so that I sold one, regretted it and had to buy another!
  8. I'm not sure what your budget is, but the Bergantino B|Amp is stunning. It's stable down to 2 Ohms and just sounds superb! There's also a cheaper option, the Bergantino Forte that I haven't had the chance to try but it's essentially a cut down version of the B|Amp but the signal path components are all the same.
  9.
Any idea where I could get such a thing done over here? Edit: actually, since he seems to be the best guy in the world for this kind of work, I may as well just put in a custom order with him. He's sent guards all over the world so it shouldn't be a problem. Now I just need to find out how much they cost...
Becky is here in the UK, so I can't see it being a problem!
  10. Yes, doesn't sound very 'Pro' in all definitions of the word.

I was reminded of this performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyN-DCfxma8 - Mainly because there's a very tasty all black Fender Power Jazz Bass Special in it - but of course the delay pedal work on the bass line is rather cool too.
  12.
"Balls"? "BALLS"??? Surely you mean HEFT?
Ha ha ha ha There seemed to be some confusion over heft before. I hoped this more generic term would be a better description lol!
  13.
The main difference between the brands like ProSound (and similar low power budget amps aimed at the DJ market) and QSC is that QSC and other better quality amps will have stiffer power supplies and be a lot pokier. The actual "sound" is created in the preamp/eq section.
Yup, agree with that. Cheaper amps can sound loud, but often lack depth and that all important balls. Cheaper amplifiers often contain cheaper components and weaker, thinner circuit boards. Fine for the odd gig, but hard work on those is likely to end up in failure. I've spotted a few tests on some of the 'high power' cheap amplifiers where an infrared camera was used to see what happens to the component temperature when under stress. The likes of QSC, Powersoft and other big brands use high spec' components and the design meant that components were adequately kept cool under load. Really not so for the cheaper amplifiers which when cooking will lead to a faster failure. Finally, and using my own amplifier as an example, when it comes to sound quality, even down to the cheap ceramic capacitors used in the signal path can affect the sound. The very best audio capacitors which, although not that expensive individually, used instead will deliver a much clearer and better sound. Manufacturers want to keep costs down to a minimum so a ceramic will get used over a film capacitor often.
  14.
Aimed at nobody in particular, but perhaps a musical interlude might be in order:
OMGZ!!! I luv dat one, you got tab for it???* as they say on 'da interwebz'.. lol
  15. Oh and whilst I am here, the Sub'n'Up tracks down low, low, low like a beast!! I will be buying the Mini version!
  16. Ah! You beat me to advertising my Sub'n'Up for sale today ha ha!! Anyway, I'll wait until yours is sold before I pop mine up out of courtesy. These are super great pedals!
  17.
Thank You. Now the GAS is building up. Go on, you know you don't need 2 of them sitting around the house
I'll give it some thought!

  21.
I've a decent pair of Sennheiser HD 600's headphones at home, but I prefer to play along to tracks at the same time. The obvious answer now may be, well why don't you buy a HK set up, but I just wondered what other peeps did to obtain a decent bass sound from their home hifi set ups ( btw, thanks again for all your suggestions on this )......
In your OP I assumed that you also meant 'bass guitar sound', hence my recommendation of some active monitors. I'd assumed that when you were playing along. I run my bass and my music through the same set of speakers (hence the monitors thing, they're built for it after all). So, no need for the HK, but a decent set of studio monitors will reward you the same. If you have HD600's, then you should be getting great results playing along to your songs with those surely! For speakers though, the Adam A7's mentioned earlier are nice!
  22.
You download Waves Central and log on to your Waves account. Once in that, that application then licenses the plugin to your machine and will prompt you to install the plugins into your DAW. Waves Central is the application that controls the installation and licensing of your bought plugins. 9.91 is the latest version of Waves - think of it as Waves Central 9.91... so if you were running Waves Central 8, you couldn't use the plug in.
AhhH!!! That makes lots of sense now Bit like a software iLok.

I have managed to set up my triple band compression, dual signal paths and I've started on my drive routings. I also saw a video of a guy using the Helix to also provide his IEM headphone mix too. That was just too cool!
When you get to the Snapshots you can change the values of those effects at the same time.
I'd been watching one or two YouTube videos and hadn't already grasped what the snapshots were capable of. I've been so busy recently that I've only had the HLT on a handful of times! Very unlike me ha ha!!

Just one thing I really like so far, is that I've set up a 'default chain' of effects in a 'stomp box' manner. I think it's great that there's certain effects in my chain that will be permanently on (the ones that are replacing the amp, eq and compression jobs for example). They don't need to be assigned to a foot switch, leaving me with 8 pedals for the effects I do want to punch in. Further more, I have assigned one or more effects to a single button meaning that I can switch on a whole chain of effects in one go. I've barely touched the surface and I'm really starting to get my head round some, just some, of the features. Next up I need to look at syncing the whole lot with my Helix plug in too!
