What's the benefit to having a balanced output (Thumpinator) as opposed to unbalancer (Micro Thumpinator)?
Most electric instruments, pedals and amplifiers use unbalanced connections in the main signal path, often balanced connections are the ones that interface with their 'outside world' such as a PA desk or recording suite.
What's the benefit to having a balanced output (Thumpinator) as opposed to unbalancer (Micro Thumpinator)?
You can use it as a DI box and send signals in the same way that the DI output on an amplifier can to a mixing desk over a long distance without picking up noise, such as mains hum. Professional microphones use the same design (you'll use a 3 pin XLR cable to connect between source and destination)
Thanks, Dood. I had a quick look on the Guitar Interactive site but couldn't find the Ampeg reviews. Any chance you could dig out a link, please?
I've most of my reviews listed here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248043-doods-100-online-video-reviews-all-the-gear-artists-and-more/ though some of the early issues are currently offline. The good news is that the review in question is available and it's in this magazine: http://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk//launch.aspx?eid=2790a35c-e2e4-435d-9361-3d3f9e251ad7 hopefully this link will work for the video on it's own: https://www.guitarinteractivemagazine.com/videoplayer?issue=32&umbracourlname=dv_ampeg_ba115_and_ba110_reviewmp4

Yamaha were the first company to bring out a production five string and the Japan BB models are amongst a favourite of mine. One day I'd love to own a BB3000, but this is certainly getting the juices flowing! Congratulations indeed!
Four4lyfe! Seriously though, does anyone know the fundamental frequencies of the lowest notes on a 5 and 8 string bass? The F# on the latter must be pushing close to subsonic.
The Spectracomp is a superb little compressor. The default tone print seemed to have a bit of a bloated mid range to my ear (it didn't sound anything like the one in my old RH 450 amp, unfortunately) but there are some great tone prints available on the TC site that should cover pretty much any type of compression you're looking for. My personal favourites are the Fed Comp for tonal transparency and the Muscle Comp for a big, punchy tone. Let us know your thoughts on the Ampeg, I've been tempted by one of those myself!
I love the SC!! (I'm sure BCers will know that by now!) - I think the TonePrint Editor really opens up the possibilities. I've even been able to use the SC (or Hyper Gravity that I own as well) as a rather cool EQ pedal too. I also really like that you can set the controls to a particular position then disable them altogether, essentially locking the pedal operation in the editor. I've also reviewed a couple of Ampeg combos in the past with the scrambler circuit on. I was surprised at how useable it was and got some really cool 'Sheehan' style low-gain drives with it. Just a nice bit of bite.
A wise white haired, and somewhat bearded raggedy old man I met in a monastery in Tibet once said: A bass with strings four: leave bar and close the door A bass with strings five: make music come true alive That could be complete nonsense and perhaps I have never been to Tibet but I play fives
Another wise man said, "Drums stop, very bad, Drums stop, very bad...."
Got it. I like the thinking, but how much better would it be than a nice pair of good, moulded earplugs?
Having tried it? Much better. I have some amazing moulded plugs - but you have no control over what goes in to your ears. You could of course add a little mixer with EQ in between if you wanted that would then give access to boosting and cutting of specific frequencies too. I use a headphone extension cable to my moulded monitors when I need to be a bit further away. -
Just posted a review video discussing an ambient mix solution I am using for my IEMs. Let me know what you think on the thread. I'm sharing it here to cross link with this thread. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/304769-ambient-in-ear-mix-on-a-budget-zoom-h2n-recorder-and-in-ear-monitors/

Ambient In-Ear Mix on a budget. Zoom H2n recorder and In-Ear Monitors
Dood replied to Dood's topic in Hardware & Accessories
Oh, p.s. There's nothing stopping a user from putting the unit in the middle of the stage I guess then feeding the output via a mixer of some sort (headphone distribution amp) to multiple members etc. -
How do you hear your bass? Are you using an amp?
Absolutely! Yes! My point is that this system essentially acts like a set of 'active ear plugs' which get rid of all the problems that people suffer with cheap generic plugs. No muffled sound, occlusion seems to disappear and there's no struggle to hear details. The added bonus being that you can turn the volume up and down to the level YOU want. It relies on having a 'good' on stage sound if you are using backline so this is ideal for those who haven't gone full IEM but are sick of ringing ears or struggling with generic ear plugs (which are often pretty rubbish in comparison). I've called this set up a 'personal ambient monitor' as the idea is that it picks up sound in the same area that you are standing - which gives you a much more natural experience. My ambient mix 'in tests' has been great as I have a better sense of direction when it comes to sound. A problem if for example a band uses just 1 microphone on stage to pick up the ambient sound. I suppose the main thing is that this is a cheap system! Effective, clear and will not distort oh yeah and the recorder is really useful too!!! -
The best thing to do is to simply watch the video footage as it describes my 'small system' for when I am not plugged in to a full IEM stage mix. This system can also be used as a recording monitor or as part of the ambient mix in a larger system. All I will say though, at this early stage, is that it just works, it really does! I am using the rather awesome 64 Audio http://www.64audio.com A8 In-Ear Monitors isolating me from the outside world and I am feeding them directly from the 'always live' earphone socket on the Zoom H2n. The Zoom H2n is an AWESOME filled recorder that has the ability to record both from the front of the device in stereo, or the rear - or a mix of all four microphones for a 360 degree monitoring experience. Can also record separate files for later processing in 'surround' Very cool! Here's my video: https://youtu.be/gzPfeOPGe0Q Do comment below!
Wish I have the cash for this but my Fbass wouldnt sell. Have a bump.
Thank you for the bump! I actually wish I had the money to keep it! That said, I'm not so sure that a high ticket price instrument will sell quickly here. I'm concerned about having to use the 'e' word and put it out for auction. Contemplating selling a third bass as well, my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special
5 is directed at wether you feel a bass player specifically from that list has had more of an effect on bass playing in general and thanks to those who have responded!
I found that one a difficult one to answer, because you could go in the direction of 'influential as a musician' or 'influential as a multi-millionaire worldwide bassist with countless fans across the globe'. With todays generation in mind, I went with the latter.
Sometimes, people just misinterpret and overanalyse things a little too much. .... Come on.
They really don't in this thread. You're coming over quite clear. I'll offer my thoughts elsewhere, so case closed for me.
You need to seek help.
NJ, not cool. Your replies haven't really been in the spirit of the BC community. P_B did only ask what your point was after all. How about expanding on your OP rather than derogatory comments? It could be a really interesting discussion if it were articulate and balanced.
-
You've answered your own question. So I'm not sure what your point is.

The OP expressed a point of view and put it up for discussion. What's wrong with that? Seems fair enough to me.
NJ asked how users of 1x12 cabinets managed "You know who you are".. Those users are either playing in bands that don't need brain cell scorching volumes, or if they do, know how to get a great tone out of kit without the onstage volume onslaught. The kit is chosen for it's job, not how cool it looks? To put it in to perspective, last year I depped with a band and the onstage volume was practically zero, yet the FOH, a modest PA pounded like a beast. Happy audience! Genuinely, a 1x12 cabinet would have drowned out the acoustic sounds on stage if it were indeed 'cranked'. So maybe the point of view about 'how do you manage' is simply down to some bands still relying on lugging truck loads of backline gear round (and mostly unnecessarily*) when technology has allowed us great tones from smaller boxes. High quality PA is cheaper and more accessible and many bands are opting to get a great sound out to their audience through decent full range kit rather than making the backline do the work and all the troubles that can come with it. (too much volume and rubbish onstage mixes ensue) *each to their own of course.

Please may I just insert a blatant plug for one of my favourite independent artists. I have hopefully managed to purchase everything he has produced. Seek out David Maxim Micic and the bands he has played in if you like a bit of prog mixed with metal mixed with atmospheric mixed with cinematic mixed with groove mixed with...

Totally agree, I've ended up having some epic chats with folk in strange car parks whilst exchanging bass gear. BassChat is full of some very cool people. Anyone toting local beers gets my vote
