Being in a band with two guitarists has been known to cause this too!
Speaking of which, they also suffer from that defect that means they never hear these words combined in a certain order: "You, Down, Your, Turn, Must, Amplifier, ForTheLoveOfAllThatIsSacredIEMyHearing." Baffling!
My brother builds Brian May 'copies' and has been testing the Deacy Hi-Fi amp for the company who is reproducing them. Really sweet tone. Nasal, as you said. Said company are trying to put all this into a stomp box. There are a few different versions of it. It is just a hi-fi speaker with a bit of electronics. Roughly 3 watts, I think. All powered from a big 12 volt battery, the ones with the 2 springs on top..... As John Deacon had a degree in Electronics, he was well qualified in that sort of stuff. Not a bad bass player too....
Excellent! Do you have any online links / info'? I'd love to read more!

I'd love confirmation to satisfy my own intrigue. Really? All those songs were fretless? I'm prepared to be wrong, but I'm not sure myself and thought it was more a case that John played very little fretless at all. He sure could and very well. Just didn't think he played as much as the list would suggest. Cool if it is right though! Thanks guys, would love to read more info'!
He was, however, the best drummer on Thomas the Tank Engine.
"Thomas the Tank Engine rolled in to the station, with a set of 7 stroke rolls followed by a flam paradiddle and finishing up with a tasty swiss army triplet." -
Hi all! There doesn't seem many videos on YouTube of the pedal being used on Bass. Do any of you use one and have any recordings / clips I could hear? Fankyew!

Parker FLY USA 5 String - Graphite neck - Piezos - ***Sold***

Oh yes! The neck on this example feels great! - I love the patterning on the fretboard too - it's a real eye catcher. Tonally, it's a really great instrument with so much variation available. The Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups are obviously well known already for their great sound, but being able to mix AND EQ the piezo pickup in as well lift the instrument to a whole new level I think. Want to sound like an acoustic? Click, there it is. Also comes with official (very) padded Parker Fly gig bag. -
how do they get two channel in these heads? is it swtiched by a footswtich!
Yes a footswitch (with LED) and a cable is supplied with the head. To switch manually, you gently press the gain control inward for the channel you want. It's a push button as well. The ring round the outside lights up blue. IIRC I covered it in my video review linked above.
I'm having real trouble getting my PW mini headstock tuner to pick up a dropped D, and it just does nothing when I try to tune the B on my 5er! Anyone got any tips, or is it just not up to it?
Tip? Yes, play the harmonic at the 12 th fret instead in both cases. (not the fretted note). The tuner will find it eaier to register the note because it will be exactly an octave higher than the open string. Oh and dead or old strings will cause some tuners a bit of grief too.

Oh and Pete - yes, I love that Ray too!
Had no idea, which tracks are fretless Pete?
I think he used the 'ray on Another One Bites The Dust, certainly on a few live gig DVDs I have, but I think if there was a medley (say with Under Pressure) he may have used it for those too?? The gorgeous fretless P bass with the maple neck was used for early live versions on '39.
Isn't he quite well known for building his own 'Deacy' amps? My love of Stingrays comes from JD rather than Flea as most people presume, he is mostly giving me gas these days for a fretless Ray! Most of my favourite Queen songs are either played on a fretless or his lovely tobacco burst pre EB Ray with the white pick guard.
He did build a little amp in to an old hifi speaker that Brian May used for the very distinctive 'nasal' solo sound on early albums. A one off. However about....ummm .. ten years ago? Vox recreated the amp as the 'Vox Deacy' amp. I have also seen that a company on the internet were as best as possible trying to recreate the actual hifi speaker cabinet and electronics as faithfully as possible. Never seen one 'in the wild' though!
Never saw a Wembley show with anything other than P-Bass and SWR. He may have had a few other cabs up there,
Here ya goooo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KFksPc83IU 2.03 > 2.05 for a quick glimpse of the Sunn 412L's. (interestingly, this was the first vid I had a look at and FF'd to around 1.30. So more luck than anything finding a quick shot of the cabs. Sorry, I didn't spend any time looking for amps!
.....instead of compressors, it may be worth looking at one of these. Check the youtube vid out, and see how the speakers are protected by this little bit of kit: http://www.sfxsound....cro_thumpinator
I'm inclined to agree with this - and maybe that a limiter although a help may not be getting to the root of the problem, just hiding it. Maybe look at the causes of the speakers blowing first. For example, the usual cause is to force the speakers to do things they simply can't cope with. Speaker over excursion being one such problem. What cabinets have you been using? Do you find that your speaker cones flap around lots when you play low notes? - I mean, you can see the cones moving back and forth? Then it is likely you are driving large sub frequencies in to the cabinet and not getting anything really in return. Do you boost the bass control on your amp/bass/effects units? Too much bass will cause those speakers to flap around and depending on the cabinets you are using, you may not be getting that much back for all of that boost as many cabinets on the market simply can not reproduce any useful frequencies below say 45Hz - sometimes as high as 100Hz! A bass peak at 30 Hz will just leave the cones moving back and forth wasting energy. So, to sum up - instead of buying more kit, you might find that trying a few judicial changes in your signal path, you'll save money and speakers. Here's my fave tip to start with. Start with all the EQ controls set at neither boost or cut. Instead of boosting the bass control, cut some of the mids instead. This will have the effect of making your amp sound deeper in tone, but not boost frequencies some cabinets have trouble reproducing. You'll have a much clearer signal and without the speakers rattling about like mad, the ability to get more overall volume that they can produce out of them! Bonus! Obviously, without knowing what kit you are using, this is a general approach - but it will help. Good luck Doooood

Certainly the Live '86 gig at Wembley he was using Sunn 412L cabs but I'm not sure about amplification, I have to admit!
I can confirm what Gary says: Fender Japan makes some of the best, if not THE best instruments that money can buy at this moment. Price/quality is unbeatable. As for the '62, you have 2 different version, the PB-62 and the PB-62US. While identical from woodwork, the US has the correct reverse tuners, a real tortoise pickguard and American electronics (CTS pots, AVRI62 pickup), while the standard PB-62 has generic "Japanese" tuners (those reverse tuners are also japanese, but you get the point), and cheaper electronics (alpha pots, standard pickup). As a first P, it's very good, as you'll have an amazing instrument, but... The necks are kinda huge, as they are vintage spec'd. The PB-62 has a more modern 42mm nutwidth, but the US has the vintage 44.5mm nutwidth, which is kinda wide if you have small hands, but nothing to be worried about.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I also believe the PB-xxUS models are meant to be 'non-export' models as they are in competition with the US built equivalents. I have a non-export CIJ 70's reissue and it is every bit as good as the US £1000+ equivalent. I imported mine when the prices were good at a massive saving vs buying US. The PB-70US has a skinny neck, really close to a Jazz neck and that's another reason why I love it. I have a build diary featuring my P bass if anyone wants to see what it looks like.
Indeed, consolidating things seems like a good way to go. Guitarist buddy of mine has just gone from a giant board full of stomp boxes to a Mesa Triple Rec (which is giving him all the drive sounds he needs) and a TC G Major 2 for all of his mod/reverb/delays. All controlled from a MIDI box that switches his amp channels and effects patches, and lets him tap tempo too. I'm off to his practice room some time soon to tweak it into tone heaven with him!
My guitarist in my lil local band has done he same too! Engl Powerball and GM2 via a MIDI board. Great sound and so easy to set up. Very tidy too!

I'd suggest, if you want simplicity yet the ability to program sounds, grab a couple of really nice drive pedals then buy yourself TC Nova System to take care of EQ, pitch and time based effects. I use an additional baby size MIDI controller to call up ten different patches instantly. If you need more routing options for pedals, i'd encourage you to grab a second hand TC G-System.
