I was going to get rid of mine as I though it was a bit characterless, but it sounds huge with this simple upgrade. The batteries last ages as well so its not as if you're always going to be changing them. The easiest way to get 2 9v batteries to supply 18v (as long as they actually fit in the space available) is to buy three 9v battery clips from maplin & solder them together like this: from: http://home.comcast.net/~mgollihur/emgmod.html
Yeah, I'm a big fan of 18v leccys - but I decline to comment any further in case I get jumped on again lol lol lol.
  2.
I was thinking more in terms of the price tag of these kind of accessories
Oh!! I see! - As heavy then! Actually - I am that annoyed, it's putting me off the RH, becasue it's such a ball ache! even MarkBass F1 rack ears, just for folded metal is a rip off at 22 quid!
  3. This is what eBay has to offer - I'm just seeing which is most likely to take the RH450 either by physically screwing to or using some really nice long cable ties as straps! 4.
Think yourself lucky you don't own Mesa Dood
I used to own an SVT2 Pro and two 45Kilos cabinets - I do very much think myself lucky - nearly as much as my spine does these days!
  5. I'm looking out for a slotted rack shelf so that it won't be necessary to drill out or use sticky pads or anything. When I find one which is the right size, I will let you guys know as I think it will be a benefit and a massive cost saver!
  6.
Anyway, this thing plays fine through my praccy amp on the E and A strings but I get nothing on the D or G, unless I attach a 9v battery. Is this normal? I would have thought I'd affect all strings? As I say, I'm not really into the whole 'active' thing and farting about with batteries etc. I wondered if there was a way it could somehow be played passively (which I'm sure I was able to do on an old Westone I borrowed from a mate once) or bypassed? Or, do I just buy a new passive p/up? Any help hugely appreciated.
Hi! Bizarre that you are getting 'some signal' with a set of EMG actives! I'd expect no sound without a battery - So yes, to get them to do what they should - battery is reauired ) - The only way to get round it would be to install a passive pickup instead, as the EMG contain a preamp inside the pickup casing itself.
Pretty sure you're going to need a battery, I'm surprised you're getting any signal out of it all. My Jap Jazzes had EMGs installed when I got them, seemed to be a popular "upgrade" in the 80s and early 90s. I think the feeling now is that they sound a bit sterile and the original pickups have more of that Fender sound. If you swap to different pickups you may need to change the pots for volume and tone at the same time, I think the active pickups used different values from passive. I'll be interested in what everyone else thinks as I'm considering changing mine to stock Fender items but I don't which are best.
Yup, EMGs do have more bottom and top than most that gives them a natural 'HiFi' tone in comparison to say, a passive Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. However, as a big fan of EMG pups - it's easy to take away the top and bottom, but it's not so easy to make a passive pup sound like an EMG. Depends on what you prefer I guess - there isn't one 'right' answer Rich is dead right, most active electronics will require different value volume and tone pots (usually in the region of 25K Ohms vs passive 250k-500k Ohm pots) if you swap to passive.
Hi Rich, Yeah that makes sense, cheers for the reply. I was wondering about pickups too, I know these come highly recommended (and they do similar ones for the Jazz); http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/spb-1-...or-precis/66504 But the genuine Fender ones aren't much more; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Original-Pick...=item45f5579f62
I can't really comment on other pups - but I remember having a set of old DiMarzio P style pickups in a late 60's P Bass once - I really liked them and I was thinking about seeing if I could get a set to mess around with in one of my P basses to see if they were *that* good!
  7.
After realising that Precision necks really are a bit too much for liking I'm on the lookout for basses that fufill this criteria. I'm aware of the Lakland's and fender deluxe. I'm am looking at passive basses and something under £400.. Cheers!
Ya know, I typed all that and totally missed the obvious! ha! - You might be able to pick up a Fender Jazz Bass Special or the active option, Power Jazz Bass Special off ebay for not a lot of money. BRILLIANT basses and I expect lots of pics of 'em on this thread. As used by Duff McKagan, the fellow from Simple Minds (err sorry - was it Derek Forbes??) and Mike Inez in Ozzy Ozbourne's 'No More Tears' video. Simple Minds: Sadly you have to wait till 4:27 onward to get a good look at.
  8. Forgive me if I am incorrect - but I believe the 'A' profile neck on a Fender is a slim one? - I have a 70's CIJ American Vintage (non-export) P-Bass and the neck on it is nearly as slim as my'89 Power Jazz Bass Special which has a '62 Jazz neck profile. I believe my P bass has such an 'A' style neck. Would I be correct in assuming that Fenders around the late 60's and early 70's were made with 'A' profiles more than say 'C's?
  9.
The jack socket. Can you imagine if every make had its own socket design to take a cable, rather like mobile chargers.
Good call!
  10. D and H Class amplifier technology - undeniable progress in the performance Vs weight debate. I can see even more improvements made in performance too - there is a lot to be said about the technology even now, compared to 'D Class version1'. I support it with open arms (and a healthier back!!)
  11.
Glad to hear someone achieving this split signal idea. I've been looking into something similar for a few months, though in my case, I want to supply a clean, unaffected signal to one channel of a power amp and to one channel of our PA, and another, effected, signal to the other channel of the power amp and a second PA channel. Do you guys reckon the power amp you use is crucial? Would you get away with a cheapie, or might that be negating any gain from splitting the signal?
I think any power amp will be fine - but I personally would (like with any gear) try to steer clear of the real cheap and nasty stuff. To make your life easier - you could look for a power amp that has 'link' XLR outs - so you could just daisey chain the power amp inputs straight out to the PA without the need for a seperate DI box. - You'd set your signal TO the power amp and elave constant then control your on stage volume with the volume on th epower amp it self - thus, the PA / engineer wil always get a constant signal should you need to adjust your onstage volume mid gig.
  12.
+ Total = £22
I reckon something like that would do nicely - I'll have to look if they do 'shallow rack' sized shelves as well. _ i'd also consider drilling four holes in and mounting the amp via rubber washers direct to the shelf. Just to be safe.
Ages ago I took my old Trace out of it's wooden sleeve and rackmounted it with a handful of bits of meccano. Perfect
Genius!!
  13.
aaah, get him so stoned he can't play... i liiike it
A good friend of mine actually played better when he was baked. I think it made him calm down and lock to the click better. Infact, I watched him record several songs, start to finish just to a click, no band and they were 'pro level single takes'. What a git!
  14.
im in a small band with two guitarists myself a singer and a drummer, all i can hear is the drummer and my hearing going Anyone else had this?
Hand him some sheet music. Works for guitarists too. Silence is golden
  15.
Nothing new here, but I was doing a bit of Kate Bush tonight ( ) and just wanted to post a couple of her tracks featuring John Giblin's tastefully understated fretless playing - (imho, of course ) At times, if I'm playing fretless, someone will inevitably ask, "oh, d'you know that song by Paul Young...?" All due respect to Pino but I'll tell them I'd far rather be playing either of these two. Babooshka Breathing
Wow! I'd never *really* listened to these songs before - I LOVE the slid harmonics in Babooshka - perfect. Love it! Brilliant bass line - I'm off to listen again!
  16.
=
ROTFLMAO and lots of other internet abbreviations.
  17. and here's a chap doing a bass cover!
  18. Anyone else think the price of the rack shelves are extortionate - and has anyone come up with a cheaper way of rack mounting the head?

    Sansamp help

Agreed, totally different circuit design and distortion characteristics. There's a guy on You Tube who has done demos of both pedals - http://www.youtube.com/user/Burgerman666 - Will give you and idea what some of the Sansamp products can do.
  20. Most of the preamps mentioned above are 'rack units' though. So I wouldn't necessarily call them little. The VF-1 is a lovely little half rack, so I think that's a good example. How about the EBS MicroBass II and the Sansamp ParaDriver. Both are pedal sized preamps and are both brilliant! - Infact I like the fact that they are 'dual purpose' - sling them in your pedal board - or use as a full preamp!
  21. Hi BramleyApple, There was a recent thread in this very forum about making money / earning a living from playing Bass that will no doubt be useful - I just can't find it at the moment!
  22.
Cool!! So Travis, that was YOU by the bar last year!! We met and you didnt even realise.. hehehe Dood, coolness! Now I'll be able to put a vibe to the name too! Tug my sleeve on the day, alright? I'm the one who's NOT Gary and NOT Stevie Gazunt, you're gonna LOVE it!! It seems to get bigger and better each year, y'kno. Is true!! Anyone, help Panther out? Please? I'll even throw in a Bass=Boss badge!
Hey Pris! Hell yeah! - it will be great to finally chat face to face too Okie dokie, I'll be sure to single you out of the crowd!
  23.
I remain completely unconvinced about the headroom explanation. The signal coming from a bass is of the order of 100-200mV p-p, which is considerably smaller than the supply voltage. It's like saying that you run less risk of banging your head if you jump up and down in the Vertical Assembly Building than if you jump up and down in St Paul's Cathedral.
I'm 6ft 3! If I jump in my front room I will bang my head!
  24. Yeah, I'm popping along too
  25.
So basically you can add more than one effect but have them not influence each other ?
Yes, kinda. Two seperate chains - so for example if you had a distortion and a chorus in one and a clean bass, octave and delay in the other, when you played you'd here both - but if you stopped - all of the echos would just be clean octaved bass, not distorted chorus. Or another way to describe it - you could have a chain with mono clean bass and another with some wide stereo distortion on it. The resultant tone would be pretty huge as there would be nothing eating away your bottom end - and across a recorded stereo mix, it would sound pretty lush (if you spent the time to make it sound realisitic of course) - great for playing in a three piece when the guitarist goes off to do a solo! There are limitations to how many effects you can have in each of the two signal paths. It's certainly not as flexible as my TC GForce was - but I don't think that 90% of guitarists make use of the infinite chaining options anyway!
