SVT.
I have a car, not a bus lol! Dood's stack will need to fit in too! - Actually - I reckon both will - if we're careful! hang on - you did say SVT - nahhhh... we're deluded as bass players - no SVTs in the Bass Bash lol lol lol
 2.
I'm almost certain Billy isn't smug (don't shatter my dreams haah!) haha Nice Dood xD I read it a while ago though i may be remembering wrong, but that ampeg worked with Him to tweak the Pro 4 much like the EBMM Bongo and John Myung, well the 6 string at least! And stop saying Hartke, i feel some GAS bubbling, especcially as i just settled on a GK rig and i'm hoping to buy another bass! And thats why Basschat is so good great mods!
Ha ha ha - no. no, Billy is quite the opposite. I've met him a couple of times and he's good friends with my drummer over in L.A. Very humble chap, many will say. Cool, well It's always possible there was more to the SVT4! I'd love to read more about Billy's involvement in gear design - I'm a geek at heart! (key) lol - see what I did there... tee hee! Ok, I won't say it anymore ! lol
 3.
Need some advice on replacement p/ups for a Steinberger xz-2 headless bass which I recently swapped for a 5 string Warwick Corvette. There are a number of benefits for the Steinberger but one of them is NOT the EMG p/ups which are decidedly rubbish. Any suggestions for easy replacements - preferably an active set up?
IIRC the EMG pups in there are passive select models or similar. I'd certainly recommend upgrading to an active EMG system - certainly from the point of view that the pickup cases will be the same size and you won't have to cut any ugly holes in your bass! I've been using EMG pickups and preamps for ..well.. myst be more than ten years and I really rate them. Your other options may well be having to rout out the cut outs for the pups - which will then open you up to pretty much anything out there! Nordstrand, Aero, Delano (v.nice!!), Bartolini, Kent Armstrong, Seymour Duncan... as for preamps - you have more options there too - be it an Aguilar OPB-3 - or custom circuits from the likes of Jon Shuker and preamp guru John East who makes some seriously customisable onboard preamps.
 4.
Thanks, I'm using the programmable DI so I assume the XLR out is designed for running into a PA while the 1/4 output can drive a regular amp front end. I'm not very in the know about power amps but I assume Matamp, Peavey and Mackie would be good choices.
You could actually use either output in to the power amp - but yes, if you are sending to a power amp - use the normal 1/4" out set to 'line'. Yes, any of those power amps are good - also Yamaha, QSC, Crown - there's quite a few. If you see one you like the look of, then ask here - or PM me if you need any help - We'll need to know what cabinets you are likely to run it in to as well - as that could help the decision due to configuration options.
 5.
dan... I think we need to A/B the SVT and the LH1000. Just for shits and giggles. Plus it gives an opportunity for us to eat biscuits.
Yes, plus one million! - If you give me a few days I'll have something else to bring to the table as well ) Would be fun to hear the LH through your brutal SVT 6x10!!
 6.
My case wont allow for this sadly, wot case you got Wayne?
Maybe you could fashion a hole with a jigsaw? no no... not that 1000 piece puzzle of the Queen Mother you keep under your bed, silly - the cutting machine kind!
 7.
Someone has stolen your headstock!!!
Bugger! No wonder I sound out of tune!!!
 8.
WOAAAAAH! I can see the perfect space in my teaching room for it Let me know when this comes out and I'm THERE!
Here's the cheeky little chappy: http://www.samsontech.com/products/product...2&brandID=3
 9. Just reminded me! Audio Technika used to do a wireless system that had a button you could mount on your bass connected to the transmitter. You'd then be able to switch channels on say an amp by connecting to a socket on the receiver. I have no idea if they still have a similar system these days - but wireless switching, it's something to think about for sure.
 10.
I had a Hartke 410tp (which I have since passed on to CHRISDABASS) and it was awesome. Had it for 4 years and never had a single problem, as well as it being in mint condition when it eventually sold it! All of my students used to love the sound too. As has been mentioned though, it was a little bit too big for me and I have since downsized to an Aggy GS112 which is incredible. If Hartke made more compact gear, I would definately buy more for my teaching/recording space, as they are great for letting students use and all round reliable products
They do! There's a GS112 sized HyDrive cabinet in the offing! - Though I'm not 100% on the release date. I'm looking forward to giving one a whirl.
 11.
I've been considering this for a while. Now I've discovered how great my Sansamp DI sounds I'm tempted to get a reasonable 3-500w power amp and using it for gigs where there will be a cab. Purchasing my own cab is further down the line. Is this possible? Any recommendations as to power amp makes if so?
Yes, the MK2 Sansamps have a line/instrument switch designed for drving a power amp so you'll be fine. There's a multitude of suitable PA power amplifiers available. I think your first port of call will be to trawl the For Sale forum to see what you can find. I recently sold a Peavey 2600 for under 200 quid. Now that's a righteous power amplifier if I ever used one! 1800W RMS in bridge mode - obvioulsy you may not need that sort f power - but any are good, but the usual suggstions about buying the best you can applies, as with anything! Stick to the names you know!
 12.
Ha! lol, thats the coolest thing ever. Another strange thing, I'm fighting not getting an ADA MP-1 at the moment! Only thing is, there are hardly any for sale for decent prices in the UK. One going for £450 on gumtree!
Heh heh!!!! Ahhhh that's cool indeed! - I missed out on an MP-1 a few months ago when I saw it for sale on a northern forum for... wait for it... £110!!!!!!! Fully working! If you get a US eBay one - there's a guy who may still be able to get a UK transformer for them - but it'd be worth checking on the ADA forum (unofficial) before hitting the BUY key. They do sounds flippin great though - There's a guy on YouTube who has done a bunch of comparison videos with some really top amps - and I have to say that the ADA, when tamed, just sounds awesome on guitar. I think only the Mesa Triaxis comes close in tone as a MIDI preamp. All this talk, I want to get one again! - DEFINITELY can't do that for now - I'll have to make do with fettling with the line 6 X3!
 13.
Yep! http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=675170 Pretty much tells everything to do with it! Am i right in saying It was Billy who pretty much shaped/designed the SVT Pro 4? My favourite Ampeg is the SVP BSP just for the distortion Both of those are hyrbrids right? Mr Billy Sheehan is no longer an Ampeg man, now a hartke man. Its a really shame and loss for ampeg!
I tried to read all of that thread - but WTF with all the religion??? Maaaaaan! I would have closed that thread! I don't think Billy had a hand in the SVT 4 - as it's basically just the SVP Pro preamp strapped to a Mosfet power amp with some bridging options. The SVP preamp appears in the SVT 2 Pro as well, which has been around for donkeys years. He obviously had an involvement with the BSP preamp as you have already said - though I can't remember ever seeing that he was invovled with adding that preamp PLUS the additional 'stuff' to make up the SVT5 Pro. Another thing that makes me think that he didn't get invovled with the SVT 5, is that his rig only ever had SVT4's in. Seems strange for an artist to go through such a long design process not to use the gear at all. - A bit like me waiting for my two Shukers - then never playing them I guess. Well, if indeed Billy is over to Hartke - makes me feel a little bit smiley to think I'd been banging on about mine for so many years!
 14.
At least the staff don't have to put up with the smug anymore.
Billy? Smug? Have you met the guy?
 15. Billy's joined my team? WOH!! I am gobsmacked - and so happy, I could shed a bit of wee!
 16.
I'd give max (silentfly on here) an email. His website's here, I'd imagine he'll have some ideas for a custom system he could build you, I remember he built an audio tuner for a blind bassist a while back (which may have been you thinking about it)
Good call! Max may have some additional thoughts - and certainly the ability to turn an idea in to a great piece of gear! - I keep trying to think of things I need, in order to get one from Max as his stuff looks great!
 17. Hmmm, I'm not sure. Thinking about it, what lifts me out of a mood quickest is being allowed to just noodle on my bass and have a decent cuppa nearby too! - My mood tends to dictate where my noodling goes - be it aggressive or whatever - but yeah, it will cheer me up pretty much everytime.
 18. Oh there's others on why a 4x10 cabinet is also a bad design, but I'll let you go look for that one!
 19. ok: Here's what I found: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mixing+speakers Discussing using a cab with a 12" driver and a cab with a 15" driver in:
What's more to the point is whether their responses will complement or detract from each other. The majority of the time the latter is the case. One of the first things you learn in How to Design Loudspeakers 101 is never to mix different drivers or cabs covering the same bandwidth. Yes, I know, that's how it's always been done with bass cabs, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. My advise: don't do that. This post has been edited by Bill Fitzmaurice: Mar 13 2008, 09:59 PM
A user asks why?
Because the responses of the two cabs are different, and the result is akin to adding oil and water. If you want to use a fifteen to get maximum low end that's fine, and if you want to run a smaller driver to get better mids and high that's fine too. But the smaller driver shouldn't be a twelve or ten, it should be an eight or a six, and a crossover should be employed so that only the lows go to the 15, and only the mids and highs to the smaller driver. That's how it's been done in high-fidelity, theatrical and PA applications since circa 1927. Perhaps the electric bass cab industry will wake up and smell the coffee by 2027. Perhaps not.
20. I think it's a section that hasn't been finished!! - I think what it was meant to be refering to was mixing cabinets with different sized speakers in (running full range). I'll let Bill Fitzmaurice and Alex Claber's posts do the talking - there are definitely posts that suggest that it isn't a good idea and I don't want to dilute them by not relaying the facts properly!
 21. hey Scott! I'm typing on my PDA at the mo' so will reply properly later today. Just saw the band name. I added you guys on Myspace a while back. I like the band! Anyway, I'm sure there's a solution. Do you guys use sequencing / midi click tracks? My band are planning to sequence effect / amp / scene changes by midi.. it's easy to switch pedals to wth the right gear, leaving you free to rock out! how about having another band member switch for you? i've even seen John Petrucci's guitar tech come on stage & work his Wah pedal whilst he played a solo! All staged mind, but still looked cool! Dan.
 22. I guess there are extremes when it comes to 'playing tastefully' lol - I'd use a trem as I said above.. certainly in a solo passage with a bit of delay and light reverb for that lovely Gilmour effect in clean passages. Maybe compression to get the notes to ring out a bit, that'd be nice. a few pinch harmonics too - yeahh that'd be sweet. I'd not venture toward the scarey 80's hair-metal trem' debauchery that's for sure! ha ha!
 23.
... A bit of string buzz is all part of the fun.
Hell yaaarrr!!
A bit of controlled buzz is a big part of how I play. I like that almost distorted tone you get when you really dig in. P.
make that Hell Yarrrr 2! As for pickup height, I use EMG actives. Part of their design is to use sensitive electronics but lowere strength magnets. They actually tell you to have the pickups as high as possible so they are as close to the string without fouling it's vibration. - Which works a treat for me, as I like to use the pickups to rest my fingers on - as an extention to my cstom 'ramps'. I'm not sure if it applies to Bass pickups - but if you have an electric guitar, such as a Stratocaster type and you set the pickups too high it can actually cause problems. One such problem is known as 'wolfing' which is a form of 'beat frequency oscillation' (something i remember from my electronic days!!) - a really basic explaination: If you play two notes and bend one string up and away from the orginal harmony a third dissonant 'wolf' note can sometimes be heard. You'd fix this problem by moving the pickups away from the strings. I've heard it with high gain settings on strats maself.
 24.
Can anyone recommend any helpful ways to improve on playing in odd time signatures and poly rhythms? I know this is a general question but I'm just looking to improve my sense of timing when things aren't played to a straight 4/4 3/4 beat.
I'm not sure what sort of music you like listening to, but I found one way was to learn and play along to songs that you know have sections of 'odd signatures'. Although it is important to be able to count the bars and understand their divisions from a theory point of view - I feel it is also important to be able to 'feel' the count when playing or jamming. Hard to describe really - but after a while you embed it in to your mind - it becomes second nature. Try 'Money' by Pink Floyd, (7/4) 'Take 5' by The Dave Brubeck Quartet (5/4) and 'Surrounded' by Dream Theater.. (bit of a ballady song, but has a really tastey 9/8 intro and verses). Whilst looking for ideas, I found a useful wiki! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_signature
 25. WOH!!!! ha ha - No, I had no idea! I'd just seen a BC-1 for sale on TalkBass - quite a treat as they are rare, nice preamps with a great crunch tone. You have a G2r already as well? Wow! I believe the phrase 'sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet' will suffice in this case! I had a massive pang to get an ADA MP-1 for ages to use with my bass rig - but I managed to quell that particular bought of GAS. I too like the freedom of slightly unorthodox signal paths! But they work for me, depending on what I am doing. However, I am enjoying just plugging in to the front of a head these days. Me being a geek though, I just know I'll be back to dual paths before I know it! ha! As for effects - yes... I quite like having a
f*ckin christmas tree
* behind me! You just can't say no to flashing lights! ha ha!! I look forward to hearing more about your rig!
