1.
Thanks for your kind words Dood. I used to have a ParaDriver. Nice pedal but I never managed to make it sound totaly clean and linear.
Max, everytime I see another one of your fine creations, I feel sure that I need to come up with what I need from you as well! They always look the business! As for the Para Driver - I'm using it as a full blown preamp - I'm not using much, if any of the wet blend at all. I think it is probably on about 20%, then I use the drive control (still clean) to add a bit of 'sub' bass, due to the way the 'speaker sim' scoops out all the middle and top. I think it's the lack of linearity that works well with my current amp-in-a-box. It doesn't have a tweeter, but uses 8" mids instead and I think they need a little helping hand above 4Khz (their theoretical rolloff) to add some sparkle in - The Para works very well in that respect. I think the treble control is said to be around 3Khz. Anyway, I digress WAAAAAAAY off topic there! I'd be interested in hearing a comparison too. I had a BDDI, but I sold it a while back - I would have happily sent it over for some hard core reviewage!
2. If we're talking about letting bass gear go.. oh the list is long! My SVT2 Pro and a pair of Hartke 4.5XL's. I think I've probably spent all the years since then searching for the same tone in a lighter box. Lets face it - it ain't gonna happen! So, why, when I had an amazing rig did I sell: My Powersoft D2004 and a pair of Tech Soundsystem ND410s cabinets? Well obviously to pay for my ole Epifani UL610.. but in a fit of madness, I sold that because.. because.. there was absolutely nothing wrong with it - My ears just fancied a change. Well, thanks ears.. next time keep your thoughts to yourself!!! - oh great... now I can hear voices..... Which also suprprises me, because the feckin ringing never stops long enough for the voices to be heard!!! So WHERE IS the Jon Shuker of the Bass amp/cab world? My basses are amazing. Like a Tattoo I know that there is no way that I can or will part with them. but WHY has bass gear been so flippin' annoying for me?
3. Hey Max! Great review! - I have to admit, being a geek, this is the kind of review I really like to read. Not surprisingly, I make sure I have the latest issue of Bass Gear Magazine as soon as it comes out! I've recently purchased a Para driver - which is excellent! - I've also found many of the other Sansamp products schematics on the net - not difficult to locate, so your review makes a lot of sense; I feel that most of the Sansamp range share a lot in common, design wise.
4. Ah no problem Ziggy! - I hope I have been of help I defintely agree with having a fiver to get under those keyboard tones!!
5. When I pull my finger out, I'll do a video lesson of a picking exercise and technique I have been working on that has improved my dexterity, speed and acuracy no end. Don't hold you're breath though as I have been terminally lazy on the 'To Do list' recently!!!!
6. Hi Ziggy, sorry for taking a while getting back to you - It has been a busy day! Ok, well - I believe the SMX head has the Dual Band compressor on it? Or not? - It's a pretty good compressor on the head. It's not a 'personal favourite' - but, like the EBS Multicomp it compresses bass end and treble end seperately. The C300 is able to do this but also compress a third middle band of the audio spectrum as well which I feel is better in some ways. A lot of bass guitar 'power' (want for a better description) is in those low regions, including lower and upper mids. Maybe the crossover point of a normal dual band compressor leaves too much of a gap in the spectrum 'untouched' for certain playing styles? I would defintely spend time with the SMX - maybe undertsand a bit more about multiband compression and how it can effect your bass tone at the end of your signal chain. Too much compression in the bottom end Vs top end can make your bass sound thin and strangled. Too much compression on the top end but not the bottom end may lose you defintion - so It's a balance between 'control' and tone!
forgive me for being a numpty but am a right in thinking with compression you can get nicer tones ie for slap and tightness etc?
I don't want to sound like I am teaching granny to suck eggs, but yes - though don't expect compression to make a bad tone good. Certainly compression can really help bring a smoothness or uniformity to the different dynamics of the slap technique. For example, I change from 'thumb up' technique to 'thumb down' technique in parts of songs. Both have different tones on my basses along with different volumes for, say, pops and strums. A compressor can tidy up those ragged peaks and smooth proceedings nicely. 'Tightness' is a good description. I find that a lot of compressors on the market don't handle 'sub' bass that well - but this is actually a good thing. If you've ever played a bass amp with far too much sub 30Hz boost on it - the bass tone will sound wooly as the speakers flap about, desperately trying to reproduce sounds that they physically can not. Thus, the side effect of using a compressor is filtering out those useless sub bass sounds from reaching the amp in the first place. The speakers can then concentrate on reproducing frequencies they *can* and - as you say - the Bass sounds a lot tighter! I use compression for slap techniques - tapping and also simulating clean guitar parts (on 6 & 7 string) It can even out strummed parts and also bring up the volume of tapped parts so they are loud enough to switch from normal fingering wihout too much of a volume drop. Certainly a multiband compressor is far better for these techniques than a full band (Alesis 3630, DBX 160 as examples.) The C300 can do Full Band and Multiband compression, along with noisegating seperately on both channels. Then there is parallel compression..... I've typed this out quite quickly, so if there is anything that doesnt make sense - shoot me a question or 3!
7.
Bought a Johnny Shredfeak PSU just in case, much cheapness if it doesn't do the job I haven't spent too much cash.
Excellent! PSU's are the sort of thing that when you don't need 'em - you can bung 'em in the cupboard - because you just know that one day you *will* need again! The one that I have for my pedals is from a piece of IT gear - and it's tiny! not much bigger than a matchbox and can supply over 1A at 10V. So I'll defintely use that to supply power to my board. I just need to decide what board I want - as I really don't need any more than 4 pedals.. 5 at a real push!
8. kk, BassULike has first expression of wish, Owen next, Ziggy is asking about compression useage, which I intend to give a good reply to tomorrow! )
9. Hey guys! I'll just check my PM's as it's late and I'm all confuzzed! I'll see who is first in with the dibs! I'll reply to the comp questions properly when I can concen-mental-trate tomoz!
10.
Bought the unpowered Gator tote gigboard from a bloke locally, can I take it that I can daisy chain a TU2, A Boss limiter, a boss Chorus, An MXR Octaver and MXR M80 from a boss power supply or do I need something with multiple outputs? Cheers Stevie
I guess it depends on the current output from the Boss PSU. If it is in the region of 300mA or more, I reckon you are fine! (That's taking the draw of each pedal to be 50mA and a bit extra to be sure! I prefer to use regulated DC power supplies for less 'noise' - I can not confirm if the Boss is one though. The PSU I have - and will be supplying just 4 pedals is 1.3A - Which I think is MORE than enough! lol Overkill
11. Can I interest you in an amazing rack compressor! Infact, TWO compressors in one box! )
12. I've decided to put together a little pedal board of my own, so this thread will prove very helpful! I've been a long time 'rack system' user - but have found a great FAT bass sound in a few pedals. Once I have taken delivery of the last few components I want, I will start sizing them up for a pedal board. One thing I *would* like is a way to protect the knobs from being bashed - I'm not used to having 'controls' down by my feet - I have always just had a MIDI controlelr in front of me! Any ideas what I could use?
13.
Just got one. Tracks pretty well - not as good as a Roland GK equiped bass - but fast enough to record or gig with. It's VERY easy to use, doesn't mess up your bass, is smaller than a fag packet and is quite cheap to buy (£70ish). Highly recomended!
Wow! Now this would be a great cheap alternative to a GK pickup for notating with! - My Notating skills aren't as great as I would like, and being able to throw down a 'technically challenging' bass line to a click and have it notated straight away would be pretty awesome. I'm assuming it'd be easy to 'out run' the box - and thus would be better recording MIDI at say, half speed (setting the click slower) whilst recording in to a DAW? I know it's difficult to describe, but at what BPM does the interface start losing track? for example, would I be able to lay down 16th note basslines at 160BPM with no problems? How about 32nd notes? To be honest, as a cheat to notating, slowing down a drum track to record midi bass in, isn't really a problem - infact, I usually practice fast passages slowed down anyway - and work up to speed. Hmmm, that leads me to another idea.. it'd make a really good practice aid too.
14.
The Mark King spacing is available on headless Statii - but I can't afford a new bass at the mo! I had not considered the Myung yammie - thanks!
The Myung is a 17mm as far as I know.. I hadn't spotted your post about the Headless Statii.. Could have saved me typing! he he!
15. For 6 string basses, look for ones with a 16mm or 16.5mm string spacing. That will give you a skinny neck feel. Status *will* do that spacing - as I'd asked Rob about an S2 headless, before I'd gotten my Shuker, which incidently is also 16mm. A nice skinny neck, that is ULTRA fast. It's like playing an shred guitar - but.. better! Some Spector basses and Tobias basses have a 16mm spacing which makes them feel skinny too. I was gonna say Ibanez SR/ Soundgear basses too, but I see that has been covered! Ah! Just thought of another! My Bill Dickens Signature Conklin 7 string was a 16mm too! - So no doubt other models will be available in that spacing as well. ok, that's about it for now.
16. Well - I'm more after an EBS multicomp to finish off a baby pedal board - but I've had a look at this little comp too! - I know how good the comp is on the RH450 - and I also have a TC C300 compressor rack here too (for sale anyway) so, maybe this will fit the bill as well. Hell, I might buy both, see what works and then let the other go! COME ON TC! ) heh heh Yes, I wonder what price the combos will hit the market at too.
17. Wow! I am really happy to see TC embracing the Bass market at last! There's some great products released. I REALLY hope that they maintain those high build standards.. I won't cringe to see them using cheap hardware and substandard electronics. I think it might put me off them - much like I have with a good few other companies who are having to make cut backs - but in the wrong areas of business I think! I know these have been out for a while - But I'm tempted to try one on bass! http://www.tcelectronic.com/novadynamics.asp
18. Back up!!! I've finally had enough with racks! I want to swap this little fella for an EBS Multicomp!! heh heh!!!! - The new version with the True Bypass please! (Cash adjustment, obviously!) £70+postage
19. tut tut!! Nooooo I'm afraid this isn't Auto Trader! Slap wrist!
20.
an all time classic when I first picked up the bass at age 12 - Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
Same here! I must have been around the same age as well! - I had to know it all! - and then there was the Wembley 1986 version!
21.
It's neo speakered and is a one handed lift, although the width makes it kinda awkward.
It certainly IS a one man lift too! I've got a bad back - and although a large box, it's easy to carry with one hand.
22.
Hi, I have one of these, had it yonks; www.drtube.com/schematics/marshall/5522-pic.jpg I dont seem to be able to find much info about online, apart from here; www.marshallforum.com/workbench/455-bringing-. Its in reasonable nick, sounds ok, just wondered what it might be worth (it has a kinda 'vintage' look to it after all)...? Cheers to annyone who can shed any light...
Ahh! Wonderful! I had the head on it's own in a rack! It's a great amp which sounds fantastic DI'd too. All solidstate with a 200W MOSFTET power amp. I think I got my head around 1991-92 and it was about £380 IIRC from my local shop. So I guess the Combo would have to be in the £500 region at the time? As far as I know, they are reliable and certainly could keep up with good volume.
23.
Brandoni/eko. I think they're called "camak" or something similar
Yes! That's it! lol - I knew it was a name beginning with C! lol - Carnac? Carmac?
24.
Eko unless I am mistaken. I had one of these many years ago which I bought from Brandoni. I was never 100% sure of the manufacturer but I am sure someone will be here soon to help!
Yes, indeed! I remember seeing these at Brandoni many years ago! I was gonna buy one. They didn't give the bass manufacturer - but it defintely had a name, beginning with C - but I can't remember what it was!
25. I've heard about the Lexicons with issues before and M-Audio firewire devices being a PITA if they aren't plugged in to a Texas Instruments chipset. - Also issues with the USB devices in that we had to get get the USB drivers from a Vista OS to use on an XP PC! Nightmare! The latest problems to hamper USB interface users is Windows 7. Poor ole Line 6 are having a bit of a nightmare with their USB interfaces. I think Boss has the odd problem too - but I understand they have W7 drivers out now. All I would say, is do your homework first! Speaking of M-Audio though - I reckon any rack mountable interface will be a good idea as you'll be able to bolt the things in safely to a secure desk mount so they cant be bashed about.
