1.
.. and past experience with multi-fx has taught me their distortions and fuzzes are generally pretty sh*te - so ideally i'd like to keep my existing pedals.
Same here! I'm adding pedals specifically for distortion to my rack and will be 'remote switching' them via my TC G-Major 2, so they are not down on the floor.
2. As far as I can tell, the 'Flat' setting on Rocco's sig head is meant to be his personal settings - probably more akin to the type of sound he is used too. Thus I suspect its a bit like having a RH450 with a preshape built in..err..sort of... Given that the EQ centres are all adjustable - I wonder what the benefit is?

Garbev

I have just bought back a Graphic EQ I sold to Garbev a long while ago! So I guess this serves as TWO feedbacks in one! Both 'deals' went very smoothly with good communications - and what's more - the EQ came back just as I remember it - So obviously well looked after! Nice one!
4.
Cheers for that dood, that cab looks killer. I will take my time with this one and look at a few designs, interesting to get everyones views and all the specs. Robbie.
Interestingly, the ISP cabs I already use share a lot in common with the design - and indeed Alex's cabs - so I would probably be better off getting a matching extension cabinet for mine - but the 1515/66 would be pretty nice nevertheless. There was a picture with the grill on somewhere - but I couldn't see it straight away when I posted. {edit - Here is is!} http://www.talkbass.com/wiki/index.php/Vla...6_%22Monster%22
5. Hey Robbie! I'd save yourself all the hard work and look at Greenboy's Fearful 1515/66 plans and the Fearful threads on TalkBass if you are particularly wanting to build something yourself. The plans, cutting sheets and a wealth of information is available over on the TB wiki. I was surprised at the amount of work that has gone in to designing the perfect cabinet - and I have to say, that if I were in a position to build a cabinet myself - I would definitely go fo this beautiful behemoth! http://www.talkbass.com/wiki/index.php/Fearful The cutting sheets etc are all available, linked at the bottom of the page, under..err.. the 'links' section!! 6. Just had a quick look - loads of 5 stringers there - or are you after a 6/6+?
7. Ey! A fellow Norwich-ite! I'm not sure if you can still get them, but I hade a couple of Tobias Pro-6 basses for a while - and they came right down in price when a Bubinga bodied version hit the market some years ago. I'd also recommend the cheaper Spector basses too, also availble in a 6 string version as well as 5. Yamaha and Ibanez both make great budget 5 & 6 strings too. I'm not a fan of Warwick basses personally, but I think that the RockBass range were actually rather good! Your best bet however is to trawl the For Sale pages for a second hand 'high spec' bass - as you are probably going to get more for your money that way. I haven't looked in the Bass Guitars section for a little while though, so can't make any recommendations straight away!
8. Hi Al', well I have to say that the TC is - for what it is - one of the more intuitive processors I have used. Please don't think my view is of a belittling one - What I mean to say is - I wonder if you are going to find a unit of that kind of processing quality that is easier to program? If you want to use amplifier and cabinet sims then maybe pick up a line 6 XT or X3 (or floor 'Live' models) - but I would say that they have even more programmeable options than the TC and thus would probably put you off? Next up - The Boss GT6 / 8 / 10 models - but again - I think *they* are the same for setting up and requuire getting the manual out to understand the menu system. Then there is the Zoom type pedals with basic functionality, lower spec - though I think they are a good place to start. Finally - how about individual pedals? Do you only use a few sounds/ effects, for example?
9. Hi guys, Not totally relevant to the OP - but I thought you might be interested in seeing that, on my Fender Power Jazz Bass Special (1989) the P pup is actually the 'wrong way round' in comparison to 'normal' P basses! The picture is of an old rig set up - maybe a rig I should never have sold! But that's another story!!!
10. Awww That's fantastic! I look forward to your review for sure! I've just contacted Tech 21 for a chat about the Classic, GT2 and Para Driver. Hopefully I'll be picking one soon too! I have an M80 already, but I want a different character of drive to play with.
11. Wooo!!! Bargain!!! - I have the G Major 2 - and it's a great rack. Snap this one up peeps!!!
12.
So, it appears I have just bought that V-Type preamp, and I have an Eden Nemesis head, so I don't need this as well. Pics tonight, I'll let it go for £190 OVNO plus postage to the UK (or arrange your own courier). It'll come with the Hartke manual and in its original box if I can find it.
Nicely done mate! The V-Type is a wonderful preamp!
13. I absolutely sat here and watched the minutes on this one from when the thread was posted. I KNEW it would go so fast - Hell, I nearly typed 'SOLD' myself!!!!

15.
Should maybe include that the sound I'm looking for is Entwistle/Geddy Lee. Nice growly jazz sound
Then I suspect you should add the Sansamp Para Driver to the list as well. The Para is the same as the RPM rack, whcih I understand Geddy selected over the BDDI due to too much mid scoop. The Para has a different distortion/drive structure as well too. I have to say, that I am not a fan of the BDDI break up. Far too messy. I quite fancy the idea of mixing a dry bass tone in with a GT2 - or to try a Para driver in my rack. Thing is - no one stocks the damn things so I can't even try them out.. Grrr, bah humbug!
16.
Apologies if I'm being picky but 'offers invited in excess of' implies an auction and I don't think that's allowed under the for sale rules here?
Yes very true - I happened to see the advert over on TalkBass as well, who also have similar T&Cs with reference to auction-esque adverts.
17.
Yup, that'll be a Di Marzio P - the pole pieces were indeed adjustable. Some Oriental manufacturers cloned the design for their models soon after but I'll bet yours was the original USA Di M as it was one of the first after-market, readily available parts to set folks on the road to 'modding'.
Fantastic! Thank you Doctor! - It certainly had a big fat tone and I was thinking about trying one in my CIJ 70's reissue - but wanted to see if it were possible to narrow it down to possible manufacturers. That's sorted that tonal ailment... Now, about this medication I'm taking.....
18.
Dood, Thanks for the reply and info - I'm a little out of touch with gear updates since the band were active back in the 90s - so I'm playing catch up a bit. I will check out the GForce/G Major and see what it does. The 1128 is an awesome peice of kit - completely studio quality - noiseless and with loads of clever bits (like a room eq measuring system with white noise (that it generates itself) and also a feedback kill facility - great for acoustic instrument miking. But for me it was the ability to switch effortlessly from my active 6 string to the passive (and microphonic) chapman stick live on stage with no need to turn around and start fiddling with knobs and dials. I don't know why it's been discontinued - used to be a time that every studio in the land had one! However, it doesn't have a dedicated footswitch - so I've been using a "Ground Control" - which is a brilliant footpedal controller with a huge clear display. It links via a powered midi cable back to a single u rack unit that then distributes patch change info to the rest of the rack and has an 8x8 programmable effects loop matrix for outboard gear. I also have a couple of mega rare TC footpedal phasers (one for guitar, the other bass/keyboard - the difference being that they phase different frequencies). I have the guitar one rackmounted but the other is still a footpedal. I've never found anything that makes the same sound and they're an integral part of my stick sound now, but if TC have an all singing all dancing rack mount unit that can mimmick them I'd be sold! Where abouts are you based? - I looked up predator country in google and it thinks I'm looking for Toxteth!
I’ve just been reading the manual for the 1128. It’s quite a piece of gear isn’t it? I love the idea of being able to use RTA functions to flat response the amplification side of things, akin to a PA set up. I’ve never tried it with my set up – but it would be fun to see what effect it has on my ‘perceived gear tone happiness rating’ lol! I can really see how the feedback killer function would be helpful with the chapman stick and as you say, being able to switch from eq curve to eq curve seamlessly without having to faff with 30 sliders! The ability to control the unit itself by MIDI looks like a god send too! – In comparison, the Gforce and GMajor do not have such an expansive equalizer – yet the 5 band parametric of the GForce or the 3 band para of the GMajor still allow some great control over the eq response curve. I like that it is possible to control the width of the eq bands as well – so any hot spots can be nipped but it’s also possible to do gaping mid scoops as well – just for fun! I must admit, I haven’t looked in to the Phaser effects on the TC as much as some of the other effects – but I know a lot of parameters can be edited per effect block (far more so than a standard pedal.) The Gforce has the additional functionality of being able to add external modifiers, such as dual LFO, pitch detection, envelope detection to individual effect parameters. Too much to explain, but you can do mental things like having the pitch of your notes control the speed of echos – or having the instrument envelope control echo tails or chorus speed! Well, it’s Predator Country – or rather where Predator’s come to convalesce – because Norfolk shop windows are bifocal and all cars come with walking frame holders as standard. Chapman Stick? I doth my cap sir! I would love one, such a beautiful sound!
19. Hi everyone! Quick question for you all - I used to own a Fender P Bass of the late 60's variety. The pickup had been replaced with one with the afore mentioned polepieces that had allen key err 'holes' in. I can't remember if the poles were actually adjustable as it was so long ago, so no idea if it was just for show. Now, the only pickup I can think of that had said styled pole pieces is a Dimarzio. Does anyone know of any other brands that use the same?
20. Infact, cut to the chase - why not just go for the TC Electronic RH450 head? My bass cabinets are active and therefore I don't need an amplifer as such - but if I were using passive cabinets still, then the RH450 would be a no brainer. (Dan now wonders why he sold his Epifani UL-610!!!)
21. Woh! Welcome to my world!! I think we'll probably be chatting some more about this thread offline! I have a similar 'method' to my bass gear too. I've always been a big fan of TC Electronic rack gear. At the moment I am running the C300 multiband compressor into a G Major 2. In the past I ran a Triple-C into my old GForce rack. I control as much as I can via MIDI - or use the external controllers on the GMajor to switch devices (such as amp channels or effects pedals) Therefore my recommendation, to be able control your compression, input levels and EQ (along with effects) would defintely be the GMajor 2 if you need external switching - or if you can pick one up cheap, the GForce. It may be an older effects unit now - but they still wee all over the competition in the majority of cases. It really didn't surprise me that the TC RH450 was such a hit - TC make great well thought out gear I feel. Oh! and on the subject of the TC - I asked them if they would release a 1u preamp version of the RH450 - which I think, for you and me would pretty much be the perfect compliment to our gear! I digress - back to your question! My G Major 2 provides all of my EQ, shaping and additional compression along with effects. Individual patches are selected using a roland foot controller - (or could be externally sequenced - but thats for another day.) The C300 is currently a 'set and leave' all capturing compression just to tidy things up. - I own a line6 X3 - and as much as I love recording with it - I keep coming back to my TC rack instead. p.s. I didnt even know that the 1128 existed! - I've just managed to locate my old Alesis programmeable EQ - and hopefully it's coming back home soon- it seems to pretty much do the same as the 1128 minus the extras. So I'm pretty happy about that! Dood.
22. I'd say set the mids and distortion to what you like, then boost them both a little bit more to cut through the mix. Dave Meros told me to do it that way once!
23.
I've had this preamp for a while now, and its great. It has two sections, valve and SS, and the option to use either or combine. I've been combining, but have just been messing with rigging a footswitch for it, and realised that the single options don't work. The lights change, but the valve stage is always audible. Switching channel basically makes no difference. Where could it be wrong? Not just switching with the footswitch, but using the front panel button. Not really sure where to go with it.
Which Tmax are we refering to?
24.
If you dont like the mid scoop of the sansamp i think you'll find the MXR in the same boat tone wise. I happen to love it, but it does remove mids!
I have to disagree on that one - the BDDI and M80 are completely different beasts. The colur option on the M80 boosts the bass quite heavily, maybe giving the illusion of a scoop - but I think the BDDI has a habit of making all bass sound the same - therefore - I would vote the M80 for tonal options.
25. Al, An idea that I have been contemplating for a long while would be to take a guitar pedal - have the above mods available as switchable options, then have the ability to mix in a dry low pass (adjustable) bass signal. This would allow the correct amount of bass signal in to the dirty mix. To better explain it, if the dirty signal came down to say 200Hz, you could mix in a low pass dry bass signal that would slightly overlap. This would mean the dirty signal wont be muddy and the bottom end will remain tight and focussed - not flabby and undefined (like the BDDI on high drive seetings for example.) Obviously if you wanted to mix the whole bass signal in, then wind the low pass all the way open so that there is no filtering. Does that kinda make sense?
