Update time!! Well, sat ready for me to give a huge amount of abuse is this little Active beauty! and this chirpy little chap
ISP Technologies presents its newest edition to the rapidly growing Bass Vector family. Now you can get the same great Bass Vector performance, in a smaller and more compact package! Combining the low frequency extension that only an 15” driver can achieve with the natural, extended (but not brittle) highs of dual 8” drivers, the Bass Vector 115 cabinet achieves a balance of depth, impact, and definition that makes 4x10’s sound lifeless in comparison! Available in active and passive versions, a single active cabinet delivers 600 watts to it’s speakers. When an additional passive cabinet is connected, the amplifier delivers a total of 1000 watt RMS to the two cabinets. The total system power can be further increased by adding additional active and passive cabinets. There is a limit of 1 passive cabinet per active cabinet. The ISP Beta Bass Preamplifier is the ideal ‘head’ for the system, or the active cabinet can be used with other bass heads when driven from their line output, and the passive cabinet can be driven from virtually any powered bass head. The high performance 15” driver is complemented by an advanced cabinet design featuring optimum volume and a large, deep tuned port. This helps to minimize the non-linear behavior and reduced low frequency output that small ports produce. The cabinet is tour grade, with Baltic Birch plywood construction, dadoed joints, extremely durable rubberized polyurethane finish, metal handle, and casters.

LF Driver: 1 x 15 inch, large excursion, 450 watt rms. HF Drivers: 2 x 8 inch, high sensitivity, 250 watt rms. Sensitivity: 98 dB @ 100 Hz, 102 dB @ 1KHz (1 Watt at 1 meter). SPL: 125 dB at 1 meter, long term. 129 dB at 1 meter, peak. Frequency Range: 35 Hz to 5 KHz (-10 dB). Freq. Response: 45 Hz to 4 KHz (+- 3 dB). Amplifier Power: 1000 W rms, high current DCAT, fan cooled. Power Required: 5 Amps x 120 VAC typical, 10 Amps max. Construction: Baltic Birch Plywood, extensively braced. Finish: Rubberized Polyurethane. Dimensions: 30” W x 19.25” H x 18.75” D (without casters). Weight: Active: 104 Lbs., Passive: 89 Lbs.
I have the kit on loan for a bit - would have liked to have gotten the 18" 1KW version - but this will certainly be fun to play with ;o) Expect a full review soon!
Very occasionaly I play through d&b rigs. I did a function gig once where they had hired in a rig because we said we could not bring our own. We arrived to find a Midas desk and a d&b rig. We had to set it ourselves. Never have I enjoyed such genuine, across the spectrum headroom and clarity for the whole band. When I played louder (5 string DB so I had plenty of dynamic range to play with) it just got louder, but the rest of the mix was not compromised in any way. It was like taking cotton wool out of my ears which I had not realised was there all those years before. And this was with a couple of 12" cabs. I really could not believe what I was hearing. They use their own amps and spk controllers obv. Heinously expensive mind you!
The kit looks really good - I've also been checking out the Martin Audio stuff as well. - But as you say - serious money! Would love to just hear it though!

I would highly recommend the BassChat Bass bashes! A chance to try pretty much any bass on the market (if the owners are ok with, of course) - a day spent with other people passionate about bass and, when it comes to testing out gear - no spotty guitar-only shop staff oiks trying to impart their lack of bass knowledge on you! ;o)
I'll have the port plugs soon - that supplier is out of stock but its imminent. And regarding frequency response, on-axis it's pretty damn flat up to 4kHz. There's a bit of a bump from the lower midrange downwards where the speakers couple and then there'll be some wiggles due to the baffle size as you go lower. But all in all its pretty good and even across the whole 50-4000Hz passband. I do want to do some proper measurements of everything soon but it's a time-consuming exercise. And you really need a lot of measurements to paint an accurate picture - in my opinion half space on-axis on its own just doesn't cut it. Alex
I was just reading on the Martin Audio site, they have a passive full range cab with a 2x15 in, where the 15" cones work together up to a certain frequency, then to counteract the problem you speak of, only one of the 15's takes over for the midrange frequencies, then the treble unit takes over for eveything above. A neat idea?
[OK, Dood?]
I don't have the problem - but yes - that's much better.
Dood, I haven't received your pm, but I think I'm entitled to raise questions about the statement Bill made yesterday claiming that his product outperforms all other products of its type. Especially as he provides no basis for all of his assertions. It looks like a midrange horn to me and I said so. Now, I'm quite happy to be proved wrong. Alex and I haven't always seen eye to eye, but that hasn't stopped us having a friendly relationship and I respect what he does.
I couldn't find the past PM in question to send again, but the point still stands. Having an opinion is fine, thats not a problem. Just be aware of your audience - and if you mean something tongue in cheek for example - try using emoticons to give substance to your post as it appears easy for people to misunderstand your 'posting style'. Ok, move along... nothing to see here, back to the topic.
Stevie, what are you talking about? Bill is an accomplished engineer who knows what he's talking about. Every time he offers advice all you can do is come up with a lame insult and usually no constructive advice or facts to support what you say. If you go to Bill's sight he and lots of other people with years of experience can help you. They don't generally hang out here becasue of people like Stevie who talk bollocks.
Hmmm yes, I have Pm'd Stevie about this with ref to treating Alex Claber the same as well. - Stevie - this ain't cool.. 'If you haven't got anything good to say......', I think you know how the saying ends.

Here are my two Shuker basses! - I reckon these are the best basses on the planet by a clear mile ;o)

Lovely piece of wood - for that price you are laughing. My only reservation at the moment is that the upper horn seems to stop above the 14th fret - and with the heavy headstock, you may be looking at getting a big fat strap to counter the effects of it feeling a bit neck heavy - but hey, it looks nice - i hope it plays as well too!
It would just be SO big! And total overkill for almost anyone. However I have considered a cab with 2 x 3012LFs plus mid and optional tweeter in a Vintage sized/shape box - the size is just right. I really need to find someone who actually reaches the limit of the Big One on a gig though, it seems we're a long way from that happening with current users. Looking forward to Dood's test-run! Alex
I think, as I elluded to in my other messages - on experience I've never been able to move enough air from just one essentially small cabinet - I can think of only one situtation when I used to gig with a single 4x10 - and that was because the onstage volume was so low. - If I am going to be on a large venue stage, (not the local fox n hounds / leisure centre type gig) then I want to ensure that I can move enough air to be heard with a good full sound (to over simplify) - it's one thing to be loud - but to actually move enough air to sound good too. There's also benefit to having stacking cabs or having a taller cabinet - Making use of floor coupling and getting the cones closer to my ears at the same time - hence my interest in hearing a 'Big One' cabinet in a 2x15 form factor - or a pair of the standard cabinets.

NewTone strings are AWESOME! - They wound a 145 string for me that was designed to tune down to F# . Sure it was a skinny string, but it DID work! a big +1 for a great team who are very helpful.
I think you'll have to test out the first T'Big One and see if it's loud enough. Do you wear ER15s or 25s? Alex
Definitely ;o) It depends, I have both - 25's for the loud occasions!
And have a look at Electrovoice power amps and PA cabs.
Yes, you have just reminded me, the SBA760 sub is an animal and very impressive - I'll defintely take a look! Dood.
If you want a modular solution then the forthcoming Big Baby and Baby Sub will sound incredibly similar to the Big One but be in two smaller lighter boxes, will go a bit lower and a bit louder. Alex
Cheers Alex, just to add a bit of clarity - I'd be looking at anything up to a 6x10 size cab in a 'single solution' or up to the size of a 4x10 in a multiple box solution. Ie the Forge Bass thang is pretty spot on for a single box, including Tri-amping etc.

I've been doing a wee bit of research this weekend, looking for ideas and certainly I am appreciating the feedback on this thread. Obviously Alex's designs are piquing my interest - I remember seeing Greenboy's Fearless cab designs on TB and watching the two designs progress has been very interesting and a great learning experience. Even the experiments with the Carvin LS cabs for a full range backline. If I were to disregard cost altogether, I like these ideas:- http://www.hkaudio.com/products.php5?section=ps&id=10 - HK Audio -one single stack - an active sub, middle and top in 3 small equal sized boxes would be very easy to transport and would provide the FOH sound behind me - and there appears to be a fair amount of 'booty' on offer there. - I know an HK rep, so will be talking to him to research further. again, expensive, but here's JBL with an active sub and an active line array sat on top http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/Prod...FId=9&MID=4 - I like that design too as it is two smaller boxes that can be easily moved about and again, lots of power on offer for head room As mentioned before, ISP Technologies offer a wide range of active PA gear along with the behemoth that is the Vector Pro active bass cabinet. http://www.isptechnologies.com/index.php?o...3&Itemid=77 . I am due to meet up with the UK distributor some time in the next few weeks to try out the cab and talk about their other gear. As I have said, all of these ideas are VERY expensive and will be hoping to achive my desires on a reasonable budget - but I want to investigate all the avenues to see which will suit me the best, be it Acme, Barefaced, ISP, HK, Fearless - what ever! I might just end up with a behringer stack lol lol!
Child's play compared to this: http://www.sweetwaveaudio.com/sales/l-acoustics/kudo.php One could use a Kudo or two for bass, if you've got a mind to, and the price of entry.
lol! Maybe a wee bit out of my price bracket ;o) Still - at least it's in the direction of what I'd like to achieve, maybe a powered sub underneath a powered line array box.. somethong around the size of a 6x10 would be suitable!

Hey mate! ;o) - Wow!! It's funny isn't it? Sometimes you find great tone in what would seem an unlikely configuration! - I absolutely love this little guitar combo over where my band writes material. It's a little Marshall box with a 8" speaker.. but set to distort a bit it sounds GREAT with my basses. I want it! lol I wouldn't mind seeing what it sounded like miked up. Talk about a short cut to gnarly bass tone ;o) Hope you are keepin' well n' everything!
Take a look at RCF 4PRO 7001 as one example. JBL, EV et al undoubtedly do similar arrayable units. Not really a bass rig though Edit: Here's a link: RCF 3way arrayable
Spooky! I was looking at that page about 30 mins ago!! Yeah - don't care if it isn't a bass rig... seems that bass gear isn't really up to the job I need it for anyway he he he he!!
