If you really know what you're doing you put the woofers on either side, the midranges just inboard of them, and the tweeters in the middle. With the proper driver spacing and crossover points you can use this arrangement to deliver very uniform dispersion across the full bandwidth of the cab, and you also can stack multiple cabs vertically for longer throw with no degradation in the quality of the sound. This level of technology is commonplace in the PA world, with prices starting around $4000 per cab, and is as far removed from the typical electric bass cab as a Bentley is from a pair of roller skates.
Who are these people and where do I find them???!!!!! ;o) I don't want to derail the OP, I seem to have spilled over a bit from my Accugroove thread - but it's making for interesting and helpful reading!
-
Not wanting to sound defeatest or anything, but I would strongly recommend getting enrolled on an electronics course too - especially one that teaches you proper fault finding skills. I have indeed seen gear nuked by 'technicians' floundering around not knowing what they are doing.

Nice one B2BM, reviews are always welcomed! I'm going to move this thread to the reviews section...
Did you try the Tecamp Puma 1000 head they have there?
I'd seen it when I arrived, but we got so engrossed with trying stuff out, sadly I only remembered it when I left at what was about 7pm I think! So, next time I will defintely give it a go!
Can't help on the AccuGroove front but can add a basic comparison between Acme Low B2s and the Barefaced Compact (as I own both). The Acmes are designed to be as flat as possible while the Barefaced is designed to be as loud as possible. Both sound superb with my Aguilar DB680/Eden WT1000 but if you're more concerned about faithful reproduction of sound, the Acmes might be better suited to you.
Ahh Thanks for the response! ;o) That's interesting and I am certainly open to hearing more stuff like this! Yes, indeed it is wanting a faithful reproduction of what is going in to the cabs, that is very true. A PA response for sure. I've been having two trains of thoughts recently and found that neither are a particularly easy shortcut to happiness. I either carry on this search for a PA like backline that I will 'model' on to with my current kit - which for this band is a far better idea - OR I cut back to finding a particular tone that works well in the band context and helps to give us more of a signature.. a one trick pony type set up. Frankly, I am far more enamoured with the former of the two plans - especially if said backline could be multi-functional, say as a monitor or a PA type thing.
I have a funny feeling though that you're going to go through every type of bass rig there is before finding someone to build you something from scratch.
That my friend has crossed my mind a few times and I have been gathering the necessary information! Like my basses, everything before Shuker has been a compromise.. I have been 'nearly happy' with everything I have owned I think.. and some amazing pieces of kit too - but I find my tastes change quickly (poor wallet) and I crave the next tone in my head. An uncoloured backline, like a blank canvas that I can paint my tones on to, would be nothing short of a miracle! - Especially if it was in one nice neat (large) box that I could plug my outboard in to and know that I had headroom and more than enough volume to take on any situation that would require it. I had a great visit to Bass Merchant yesterday thinking that I was gonna buy a new rig - and found some great gear - but interestingly it has helped my cement my ideas about what I need, as opposed to having an enormous GAS attack in a giant toy shop. That aside, I could have quite easily have bought a TC rebel head or GK MB2 500 yesterday ! SOOOOO NICE!
That's the kind of design that can only be made to work really well by using onboard DSP and amplification. It doesn't actually crossover each driver so that none of them overlap but it uses clever trickery to made sure that where output does overlap that its's phase coherent. The performance is reflected in the price! Alex
If drivers of different sizes are in one box and are crossed over correctly, then should they in theory be in a vertical line for best dispersion? I'm thinking a bit more in terms of HiFi cabinets here, but applying the same thought to bass cabinets and 'full range' cabinets.
It's better than horizontally mounted, but not as good as vertical. Scientifically speaking never use different size drivers to cover the same bandwidth. Yes, it's seen all the time... for the same reasons that 4x10s are.
So I am thinking something like this is how a cabinet should be designed!
Off to a pro methinks, and don't experimentally be using it any more.
+1million - dont even change the fuse and plug it back in... might be teaching to suck eggs here, but can't stress safety enough.

I did wonder the other day about WinISD and it's abilities. Especially as the app itself, given that so many seem to rely on it for results, is a bit clunky and free.. So as usual, technical knowledge to decipher the details, as demonstrated in your post is obviously a good thing when the software *shows* you something which isn't necessarily true. Thanks for filling in the gaps, when you put it that way, it's logical and easy to understand. Did I ask you about an ETA for a tweetered Big One? My memory seems to be failing me!
-
Hey Alex, I'll insert the following disclaimer that I know nothing about WinISD really, other than making pretty patterns, but I thought I'd have a play anyway! Just a question really - and I suspect the answer is probably down to cost - I'd been reading some stuff posted by Buck Waller about the use of mids instead of tweeters and with your PM's in mind I wondered if it were possible to get the top end out of a midrange without having to resort to using a tweeter at all. I haven't added the specs for the mids you are using so found the ND410 to play with instead. If I added two or more drivers in to a simulation, the HF roll off extended upward, yet the response curve remained relatively flat still.. or in some cases actually flatened out more. - the SPL etc obviously went up too. So using a slightly backward method - and I am thinking a rather expensive way too - If you added more mid drivers but padded them back (and fettled with the crossover) you would indeed keep that nice smooth midrange treble response, that in theory wouldn't go harsh like a tweeter does at high SPL's?

**SOLD**Hartke Hydrive LH1000 Amp Head - few months old.
Dood replied to eightball's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
If anyone has a Barefaced Big One in their future, this amp is practically unbeatable! Alex
Funny you should mention that, Alex! It had crossed my mind too. Thats a lot of power for notta lotta wonger and would server the Big One beast well I am sure. -
Hmmm I guess time will tell in the QC department. 'US Made' will no doubt hold it's price if the Asian versions suffer a drop in reliability.
-
If it were possible.. and I truly wish it were, I would have saved myself lots of time and even more money! lol!
-
Just been reading the LH1000 technical review in Bass Gear Magazine.. seems this head is a very able little beast. At that price, I would get one just to have a 1000W power amp for a set up!

Hey LB - a fantastic idea - but I think it could prove a little difficult as we all hear our gear differently. I think there are too many variables involved with trying to describe tone when you can't hear it yourself. for example, I could use phrases like, 'Massive bottom end' or ' buttery mids' or 'juicey top end' but doesnt really describe what the cab sounds like. Then there could be an element of 'this is the best cab I have ever used' which will probably get a natural bias, despite being completely unuseable for particular applications - ie, sounds great quiet but not very good up loud. On the flipside though, if several people come up with the same response, such as 'this cab sounds wooly, lacking in top end and bite' - then I guess a majority view point would be good guidance. So I can see it being beneficial if enough people partake! - It'd be great to have a reviews sections as good as TalkBass, but BassChat doesn't have the massive user base... (yet!!)
+1
I liked this from Steve's web page!
AND NOW... Captain Beefheart's Ten Commandments For Guitarists: 1. LISTEN TO THE BIRDS...That's where all the music comes from. Birds know everything about how it should sound and where that sound should come from. And watch hummingbirds. They fly really fast, but a lot of times they aren't going anywhere. 2. YOUR GUITAR IS NOT REALLY A GUITAR...Your guitar is a divining rod. Use it to find spirits in the other world and bring them over. A guitar is also a fishing rod. If you're good, you'll land a big one. 3. PRACTICE IN FRONT OF A BUSH...Wait until the moon is out, then go outside, eat a multi-grained bread and play your guitar to a bush. If the bush doesn't shake, eat another piece of bread. 4. WALK WITH THE DEVIL...Old delta blues players referred to amplifiers as the "devil box." And they were right. You have to be an equal opportunity employer in terms of who you're bringing over from the other side. Electricity attracts demons and devils. Other instruments attract other spirits. An acoustic guitar attracts Casper. A mandolin attracts Wendy. But an electric guitar attracts Beelzebub. 5. IF YOU'RE GUILTY OF THINKING, YOU'RE OUT...If your brain is part of the process, you're missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something that is fur bearing. 6. NEVER POINT YOUR GUITAR AT ANYONE...Your instrument has more power than lightning. Just hit a big chord, then run outside to hear it. But make sure you are not standing in an open field. 7. ALWAYS CARRY YOUR CHURCH KEY...You must carry your key and use it when called upon. That's your part of the bargain. Like One String Sam. He was a Detroit street musician in the fifties who played a homemade instrument. His song "I Need A Hundred Dollars" is warm pie. Another church key holder is Hubert Sumlin, Howlin' Wolf's guitar player. He just stands there like the Statue of Liberty making you want to look up her dress to see how he's doing it. 8. DON'T WIPE THE SWEAT OFF YOUR INSTRUMENT...You need that stink on there. Then you have to get that stink onto your music. 9. KEEP YOUR GUITAR IN A DARK PLACE...When you're not playing your guitar, cover it and keep it in a dark place. If you don't play your guitar for more than a day, be sure to put a saucer of water in with it. 10. YOU GOTTA HAVE A HOOD FOR YOUR ENGINE...Wear a hat when you play and keep that hat on. A hat is a pressure cooker. If you have a roof on your house the hot air can't escape. Even a lima bean has to have a wet paper towel around it to make it grow.

It's caused by beat interference, the same as you get if you tune by harmonics What you're actually seeing is the difference in frequency between the frame rate (in this case Hz & FPS are the same thing) and the note frequency. There's a point at around 0:57 where there's a standing wave effect caused by the frequencies being the same (or an exact multiple of each other). A
Maaaaaan Andy! You beat me to it!! lol - Beat Frequency Oscillation, was how I was taught it, back in the day! ;o)
It has some different outputs... if you look at the site, the XT Pro has SP/dif (or something) ins and outs and a couple of other things. In terms of the sound and software they are identical.
The man, he speak the truth!
I think the main issue with the El Whappo is that they claim it's an 'audiophile on steroids' cab and used to state that it was a 4-way design, splitting your tone four ways and sending each part to a driver that was dedicated to that frequency range. But in reality it's a fullrange 15", a fullrange 12", a first order highpassed 6" and a couple of first order highpassed dome tweeters. Sounds nice but quite far from audiophile! Alex
Cheers Alex! That was exactly what I wanted to hear.. very useful - I was aware that the TRI210L used a 1st Order for the tweeters but never got round to finding out what the situation was with the other Accugroove cabs. - Well - rather, these kinda details aren't so forthcoming.
A-G getting caught with their pants down over the Accu-Switch was the tip of the iceberg. It brought to light that, while better engineered than the average bass cab, they aren't what they're cracked up to be , and certainly not worth the price of admission. On you side of the pond Alex's offerings are a far better option for a lot less Sterling.
Yes, I am interested in giving one of Alex's monsters a good once over! - I'm interested in your comments. I have seen that it has been suggested the cab volume for the 15" isn't big enough in the 'El Whappo' but what other 'issues' have been noted with the design? Out of interest, has anyone published any testing to support findings? Really, I'm just interested, being everso slightly geeky. There seems to be a lot of support for the cabs, I'm certainly thinking they are no worse than 90% of cabs on the market? - I'd like to know !
