Slipknot?
Or possibly Paul Gray as in 'Eddie and the Hotrods', 'UFO' and 'The Damned' - not 100% sure about the damned, but he defintely toured with Captain Sensible's band. Awesome Gibson Thunderbird tone and WHAT A PLAYER!
+1 for the MXR M80, blends with your signal so you can keep the low end and still get silly with the gain! It has 2 pedals, one for the effect eq section and another for the OD (you have to have both on for the OD to work). I set mine up so i can use it as a clean boost/eq switch and also a distortion pedal so it's very handy It also functions as a DI box too! Oh and if you want class fuzz without Wooly Mammoth prices check out the ZVEX Mastotron (there was a thread about it recently). I paid £76 posted for mine and it rules. I currently use just these two pedals for OD/fuzz, both keep the low end and sound the tits!
There's an M80 in the for sale section now too! Hi Andy, The -15dB input is designed to 'pad' or reduce the input volume from a particularly hot signal to stop it from distorting the preamplifer (the first section of the bass amplifier signal chain). Now, it is usually expected that active basses have a much higher signal output than that of passive pickups - and thus, if the signal is too strong it will indeed cause the preamp' to distort. If a nice clean sound is what you are after then, plugging a hotter signalled instrument in to the -15dB input will help to reduce any chances of distortion. so that's the theory out the way! In practice.. it's usually a little different! There are passive pickups on the market that I have found to have a much higher output than some active basses!! So, what do you do??!! Well.. it kinda confuses matters.. as you may not actually *know* if your instrument has a high output or not.. Well, Andy.. it will be a case of trusting your ears. Try both inputs.. play nice and loudly and see which sounds best. Does one distort more than the other? Obviously, you may *want* your amplifer preamp to distort and sound all dirty, in which case, using the 0dB input will help to raise the gain in to overdrive. (unpadded input). Now unfortunately, I cant see a 'signal clipping' LED so I wont be able to give you a quick tutorial on setting up the gain control using one!.. so, I would suggest starting with the gain control at zero and slowly turning it up as you play until you hear the signal distort through the speaker (you will be able to hear this even with the master at lower volumes) , now, back the gain down again until the loudest notes you play still give you a nice clean signal. IF the signal distorts even with the gain control low, then use the -15dB input and start the process again. Conversely, if you can wind the gain all the way up and you dont get any distorting at all, then probably best to use the odB input, as the bass may have a low(ish) output. Hope this helps! What basses are you plugging in to your nice new shiny amp? ;o)

I see what you mean Dave.. Ouch! that did turn out to be an expensive bag! I was just tryinig to think of other options too. My other thought would be like, a Camera bag.. or one of those laptop rucksacks. Though again, I'm afraid I cant give you specifics. Which still leaves you with not being able to try one out. - It did make me think though - if companies like Roqsolid exist making 'covers' for amps etc.. annnnd you can buy custom rack cases - I wonder if there is a company out there that can make bespoke holdalls/rucksacks/bags etc? Hmmmm... I'm pretty handy with a sewing machine - I see a gap in the market!!! lol
-
Hi Dave, There is a massive range of laptop bags out there. I use one for my slender MB F1. Infact, laughably, the last time I went up to meet the guys for a writing session I took my amp, laptop and all my leads in one bag.. and my X3 in it's own gig bag.

Freebie? you lucky so and so! In that case! grab it!!
I used to use ER20s but I had the same problem as you. They cut the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones creating a muffled, muddy mix. From your last post you sound like you're getting used to them which is good. I couldn't get used to them so I splashed out on the custom moulded ER15s (£160 from Specsavers). I couldn't believe the difference. The ER15s are in a different league altogether. They cut all frequencies much more evenly than the ER20s creating a more natural mix. It now sounds like I'm not wearing earplugs and the band have just turned down. I find them a lot more comfortable too. I found that after about half an hour wearing the ER20s my ears began to itch like crazy. I can wear the ER15s for hours and forget they're there! Best 160 quid I ever spent, honestly.
Yes! + 1million! For my moulded plugs, I have two sets of filters. One at ER15 (15dB attenuation) and one set at ER25 (25dB attenuation) . I choose which set will suit me best for the environment. If I am going to a gig, or playing with a 'quiet' band then the 15's are perfect. Playing next to a loud drummer.. Mr Lang for example, then the ER25 pair would be the better choice lol! According to my audiologist, I have smaller ear canals than 'the average' which made the cheap ER20 models uncomfortable and not very effective. I felt that I was listening to the music through a layer of rubber.. which may have been the case if they had become pinched in my ear. I have used many of the different types of ear plugs, including 'Docs' & Alpine and nothing comes close to Etymotic Research's moulded plugs. Infact, the Docs were dreadful in comparison.. I didnt mind the Alpines.. and the rest.. well I can't even remember they were so bad! Cut to the chase.. I would SERIOUSLY advise everyone to save up to get a set. Your ears will thank you - especially if you don't end up with tinnitus like some of us! ;o)
I think you should get Spotify on your PC and have a listen to things first. http://www.spotify.com/en/
Is Spotify a bit like LAST FM? - I havent had a chance to look at the site properly yet.

Yes I used to have one.. got it for 150 quid. They sound REALLY good! But I found 50Watts wasnt enough for bass in a rock setting.. However when I used it to play lead guitar in a metal band... WELL!!! I like!
I am confused?!? Surely JJB and Simon Rix are merely endorsers in the same way that Dood is? Or is there actually a Shuker signature bass available for one or more of these arists? Steve

Seriously though - is this even a signature model? Am I being blind but I can't see anything on the site that says that it's specifically a "Simon Rix" signature. Isn't it just a Shuker P that Simon Rix is using. If it is a signature model, what is special about it? I said the colour earlier but nobody has uttered anything about it's signature status or exactly what that means......

There is a difference between an artist endorsing a product and having their own signature model. To my mind a signature model is a model that is intended to be duplicated for people to buy the exact same spec. It is important because if it is a signature model I would expect to be able to ring Jon up and buy one. If it is what I perceive a signature model to be then Jon would be 'knocking them out' which would be a significant change to his build to order policy. This is why it was important to me. I could be completely wrong of course but thats how I see it. Steve
Well, I think my take on it is that I *perceive* my 'Signature' instrument to be ..well.. like my *own* signature. I want my instrument (and all of MY personalisations that make it more comfortable for me to play than any other instrument) to be easily identified as mine.. in the same way that ..well.. my signature on a cheque would be. This is one of the reasons why both of my Shukers are a matched pair. I'm a big Queen fan, as a few of you may have realised lol - and I LOVE the idea that Brian May's guitar is instantly recogniseable. It is considered his 'signature' I feel. It was never designed with being mass produced in mind and I feel the same about my basses. I may feel different if *insert brand name major* were chucking out 1000's of mass produced 'Doodle-alikes'. It would be great to know that so many people would want to buy 'my design' But, I'm not so sure I would call every one of those a 'signature' instrument.
However having JJB come to Jon after he'd turned down a very large US based Precision bass maker beginning with F when they offered him a signature bass (allegedly) says a lot about the quality of the bloke's work.
that would be a +1million for the quality of Jon's work.

It is easier to manage a single thread for a particular user than to keep searching for multiple instances. If you could use the search function to see if a thread already exists it will save time and effort from the moderation team. Thanks ever so much! Dood.

I need to move the build diary to a new host soon. I'll give you a shout when I have done it, cos I'll need to make sure it can still be accessed with a new link. Watch this space!

I mention this one a lot.. but look for a distortion pedal that will allow you to mix in the dry bass tone as well, to keep the bottom end and 'power' intact. The MXR M80 is a good pedal for doing this.

I've tried taking a standard tuned track, clicked on th eproperties and selected the down tuning. You get the opportunity to transpose down, sure.. but I notice than what used to be an open E for example (0 tab) now shows as a (3) so sure enough the fingering changed when I dropped 3 semi tones. Annoying!!

Hmmm!! good point! i've just tried it now and I can't seem to get it to display as you requested either. I feel sure it must be possible!
I always thought the 810 looks overkill. That's nice. Menacing but in a civilised way.
"Excuse, I hope you don't mind awefully if I cause mayhem and terrorize in a most uncouth way?" lol ;o)
Well... after seeing that... and doing a bit of price research... I got my own, for even less than what was paid above, and mine is one of the last USA ones, which was a nice added bonus (not that im knockin's the Vietnam ones at all). The chaps at the shop even gave me a Speakon connector FOC as well. Top guys, who also fashioned a protective cardboard cover out of other boxes with a stanley knife for me to take it home in. It is awesome. As mentioned above - menacing. Its set up downstairs at the moment and hasnt been moved because i just like looking at it. Fearsome power as well - im not using it above 0.5 volume on the amp (B2RE) and its shaking the floorboards. With my Ric and a pick you can nail that Ric/Ampeg tone in seconds. I am so proud of it that I had to take a piccie of it and my basses. Sadly I am in the picture as well, but hey, you`ll get over that I hope.
Steve, Very cool mate.. congrats!! Lookin' forward to hearing the lil monster!!!
I am a huge John Deacon fan and have always loved his sound. He was my first bass hero and I suppose a lot of what he did has rubbed off on me. I have never had any luck with regular P basses in terms of getting a good sound so what would you recommend to help me get the John Deacon sound?
There's a few isolated bass tracks on you tube to have a listen to that may also be of help http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type...s+only&aq=f

Actually, I'd be interested in finding out more about his live rig through the late 80's. I see at Wembely (86) he was using Sunn 412L cabs - but no real information about amps and stuff. I *think* for the 86 gig he was using a Nady wireless? Anyone have any more information?
