Jon told me yesterday he's going to aim to complete your bass this week if he can. Which reminds me, I got the quarterly phone bill today - 17 quid in calls to Jon's mobile number!!
Hey Steve! Thanks mate! - yup, Last emails received; we are heading for the end of this week. I'm not sure which day, but sooner would be better than later ;o) - Hell.. I have waited this long.. a few more days won't hurt.. much lol lol! I'm taking Doodle up with me for some group shots too ;o) £17!! Flippin' eck'! I haven't had a peep from Jon on the 'phone at all! - Maybe because the war and peace style emails mean that he hasn't needed to call?

I think a huge problem with a lot of tweeters in bass cabinets are that... basically... the are cr@p. Or the crossover is... or both. I think that little thought goes into designing the two so that they work in harmony with the 'woofers' - whatever they may be. For example, I think the Behringer ones are pretty much the worst I have heard.. and even my Epifani one sounds shrill when it has to deal with full range audio. I like Alex's idea of using a quality midrange driver instead, but am yet to hear one in context to decide if I prefer a tweeter as well or instead of. - Which leads me to wanting to try Alex's BareFacedBass cabinets.

p.s. I'm movin' ya to Apms & Cabs forum..

If by 'import' Tobias basses, you mean the Korean 'Pro' or 'Toby' basses, they are fitted with Mighty Mite hardware and can be gotten directly from them or through ebay, of all places. Having said that.. as Mighty Mite hardware is just a clone of 'other' hardware, as long as you have the dimensions to hand, you could go pretty much anywhere for your parts. The keys for example are a copy of Gotoh/Hipshot and many others will fit too, as is the Bridge. The pups you'll have a harder time with, as they tend to be an odd sized soap bar, but I amongst others preferred EMGs anyway. Mighty Mite pickups are 'ok'.. but really, just that. In short, if it is *your* bass we're talkin about.. I would go get the better hardware anyway... It makes a good bass.. great! I loved my 6 string. Sorry for the v quick reply lacking in any sort of grammar!!!
I saw a bass player in a band doing it the other week, every thirty seconds or during every number he would lick his plucking fingers, it got so i couldn't my eyes off him, pluck, lick pluck. don't know what it did to the strings. then i read in Mag today John Deacon did it to.
Having kinda followed Mr Deacon's career from when I was ickle, interesting the only time I ever remember seeing him lick his fingers whilst playing was at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert. I'm not aware of any other footage he had done that. I would have guessed that it was to clean sweat off his fingers? I can't stand playing with sweaty mits.. but then, bone dry and brand new strings can feel a bit impeding too.
*sigh* I like the look and features of both these units but even with a list of pros and cons I can't seem to decide. Line6 Pod X3 Live Pros

More extensive modelling (mic position etc)
For guitar and bass (and mic) for when I go over to the dark side
Good user support and streams of firmware updates + the ability to share patches over the internet quite easily
Dual tone - could have a clean bass with EQ and then a "dirty" tone all in one patch. Seems to offer greater flexibilty over the wet/dry blend on the Zoom.
Cons

More expensive - around £369
No tube
Seems to have a few audio drop-out/USB issues which only a reboot can solve.
Has anyone had experience with both and could offer their opinions? Or anyone who's used either of these pedals offer some opinions? Proper stuck between the two, and I like to have something set in stone to "aim" for saving. Cheers Karl
I have the X3 Live and will see if I can disrupt your choices for you! ;o) ok Pros: Yup agree with all of those and defintely the reasons why I went for it. The Dual option also allows you to run say a guitar and a bass through their own seperate channels with their own amps and effects .. that is awesome! You can do the same with vocals using the full balanced mic input with guitar/bass on the 'other' input. Hell, you could plug in a stereo bass.. (Or the Billy Sheeham Attitude Bass) and run two totally seperate paths as he does with his live rig. One dirty channel controlled by one pickup and his clean 'super deep low' clean channel controlled by the other pickup. I love the USB recording too.. It's great! - Line 6 is one of the only companies I have found who offer live updates regularly to their hardware. Fantastic! They should be commended on doing such a good job! Ok.. Comments on your Cons... More Expensive: Yeah, I guess.. but I actually picked mine up for £275 from GAK Jan/Feb time, brand new!!!! ;o) No Tube: Doesn't matter.. Really... people spend far too much time all lahdee-dah over tubes. The POD has got some of the best valve amp sims out there, in a box. Really.. I wouldn't worry about it. To be honest, if you look at most schematic diagrams for 'amps with a preamp valve' they probably ain't doing much in there, other than despensing snake oil. I know for a fact that there are manufacturers out there who sell there amps on 'real valve distortion' - where infact there are a nice couple of diodes, top to toe in the preamp feedback loop.. errr.. ok.. nice one guys! lol lol - Anyway.. I digress!! lol More on that another time! USB Issues: Well, I have a 'power hungry' Windows Vista Ultimate software build on my not-exactly-high-spec laptop and I am yet to have a single glitch in a number of softwares. I think those issues may have been fixed? The only thing I would defintely make sure of, is that all the drivers for the PC/Laptop and X3 are all up to date. I'd also suggest that, as with any Windows machine, house keeping is kept up to date. Usually, it's not the X3, it is the state of the PC software it is expected to work with that is the problem.
As someone mentioned before, I think, it's not a fair question, as there's no fair answer, when talking about 'who's the best'.. It's just because nobody has heard most BC'ers playing, so, how the hell can you judge by a few players, that you've heard? Oh, I'm saying this not because I'm feeling a better player than those mentioned, but this thread simply looks a bit cockamamie to me.. All the best, Faith.
Well, I think thats a fair point, Bass Playing isn't a competition and there is no 'best', but remember the OP is 'who is your fave', not 'who is best' with a tiring discussion over defining what makes one style better than another. My favourite bass player on the planet who I owe so much to, is the unassuming, quiet DEMI-GOD that is John Deacon.
On a slightly more frivolous note, I have seen some truly great Basschat virtuoso players at the Bass Bashes but no-one comes close to the guy who 'slapped' his way through about 5 hours at the National Bash last March! Think my ears are still bleeding..
Ha ha ha!! yeah, I forgot about that one... completely oblivious to the fact that he was the aural equivalent of 5 hour dental surgery, minus anaesthetic. Ahh, like your playin' Nick.. I seem to remember seeing you play at a guitar show, but didn't twig you were on BC until I met you at a bass bash!
-
Hey everybod' I'm touched! Thank you for the kind words! - I think all musicians like to get compliments about their playing, but to get noted by bass players I look up to is humbling! Well, like a good few responses on the thread, I have only really seen you guys at Bass Bash meets and myspace/website pages. I have so many to list who I think are awesome and i'd feel bad about missing any out! ok, in no particular order.. Ped's videos are groove tastic! Also enjoyed BassJam and Ari jamming together at one bass bash.. I always have time for Dave OBBM.. good solid playin.. LukeWard.. niiiiiice.. Urb, Stu' Clayton, hmm.. there's a couple of guys I can visulaise, but can't remember their BC names.. sorry!! - who else! Rich, I like Steve's groovin with the Ken Smith basses.. and that beautiful Alembic that played like butter! Steve Lawson, Janik, I know there are so many more.. but to be honest, I pretty much learn something new from everyone I see.. thats not BS.. I'm really interested in seeing how different people tackle styles and genres. I find it fascinating!

I have owned two M80's. I sold the first one.. missed it so much I bought another! - Had I have not found the POD X3, I would have kept the second one. Yes, it is a GREAT pedal and I much preferred it to the BDDI. That said.. I'd hasten to add that they are two very different beasts and would be like trying to compare apples and pears.
-
A scathing remark I would add.. and will, if I get time to flesh out later on, is that 8/10 compressors that I have tried are less than adequate for decent bass compression. Some are just aweful and if you take out the few good ones, what is left should only be used as a crazy effect! Sadly, 'onboard' compressors vary widely as to their abilities.. a good example above. I know one particular manufacturer uses very few components to handle the full dynamic frequency range of it's amplifier head.. Great if you like squishy unintelligible blurghhh as your tone! Anyone know the URL to the website with all the compressor test reviews on? It was posted on BC recently. I found that was a good description of what bad compressors don't and what great ones do!

Ah Yes Pete! When Within The Void are up and ready for touring, I'll be sure to pop a post on the forum!
That's looking great Dood, and it's not even finished in the photos. How long was the wait between applying the finish and getting the final product for the Doodle? Are you going to have to wait for any hardware to arrive to complete this bass? Do let me know if the 'Void make it daaan saaarf when you're up to gigging speed as it would be great to catch up.
Hey mate!! Thank you! Well, Doodle was actually quite a quick build, considering it was the 1st 7 string singlecut - and all my customisations that required new templates - Also, the finish apparently goes on in a different way, in comparison to the more 'usual' colourings. These choices added a lot of time to the build and I would guesstimate that the finish and the wood prep may have added another few weeks on.. but I couldn't be sure. It was all a blur of excitement!! Not only that, at the time.. I hadn't helped Jon have 20 basses on the go at the same time ;o) - Sorry Jon! Thankfully ABM are completely up and running again.. Jon has a complete stock of all the bits I need apparently.. so.. we should be looking at bolting up as soon as the lacquer has hardened and been finished.
Just had a look at the Alasacorp site. Must have taken an age to decide on a suitable finish for Doodle & Sally!!
Oh dear gawwwd yes!!! Very difficult! I knew what I had in mind... but the problem came when I was given SO MANY choices!!! What an incredible array of products!

aahhh beat me to it! The ear Plugs sticky maybe long, but there is some really useful advice on it. I would very strongly recommend The Etymotic Research (otherwise known as ER) moulded custom ear protection. It's worth every penny.

The guys are still on the look out, I believe...
Oh Dan, that reminds me so much of a Tobias...coincidence?
Steve! Another eagle eyed one amongst the clan! Yes indeed! More than a passing resemblance to my ole 6 string! I'll have to grab a pic to show where i got my ideas from! I played Tobias basses for many years and as much as they were 'nearly' right.. they still fell short of what I needed. The wood choices are pretty much the same. This one has White Ash wings, whereas my toboas basses were Maple. I have once again gone with a Birds Eye board, to match my other Shuker.
-
It's alsacorp's stuff, but we got it through a UK distributor. Yeah, there were so many finishes I could have had! I nearly went for the Hologram/Chrome finish!!! - I was even more tempted by the temperature sensitive coating as well! That would have looked pretty mad I think! The flip to my eyes looked the most classy though. - It's ideal, as I could never choose one single solid colour for a bass!!!
Same paintjob then?
Hell yeah! One reason was that it is very expensive to buy and it seemed a shame to waste so much left over from Doodle. The flip paint itself is actually an opaque paint and is very dependent on the colour of the undercoat for the flip finish. Jon did try some different undercoats to see how they came out, but the flip lost it's 'effect' with lighter choices. Hence, both basses will have the same flip. One cool thing about it though, is even though it is the same paint, the flip never goes on the same way twice. ( You can never repair a flip paint job, you have to start again) .. which means for me, if both basses were stood together, one might look green, the other purple.. until you walk past and they change colour in front of your eyes! *insert spooky music* lol
Sally is taking shape... see that you've kept with your signature dot inlays!
Ah yes! Well spotted, it's not totally clear in the pics, but as many of my 'signature' options/ specs as possible have been carried over to the new bass, Including the dot inlays! I think the basses will look great together, a 'matched pair' as it were.

Hey everyone!!! Yes, sorry about the wait.. I meant to upload some pictures but had some other stuff to do first! I have had a reply back from Jon. The pics below are 'how the bass was' a while back apparently, as the finish should have gone on last week according to the email. We should be looking at a completion date in the very near future! I can't believe these are the first pics I have had in over a year! - ok.. withoot farthur a-doooo, Here's Baby Doodle lookin' a bit nekkid. Note: These are just rough pics; the 'stuff' you can see on the wood is just products, not actually damage to the bass!
I thought a lot of Duff's sound came from a MXR M-80 pedal

I think that has been more to do with Velvet Revolver and that over driven sound rather than the old Guns stuff, I say that 'cos that pedal ain't been around that long! Also to point out what Dood said, I think the P & J pickup configuaration is a lot to do with the sound also. Dood - let us know how you get on nailing the Duff sound, am interested to hear. Will you go for the really 'clanky' chourusy sound or the more subtle/traditional Duff sound? JTB
I watched an interview with Duff on YouPube and he didnt mention the M80 at all.. which I thought strange. The pedal is sooo good though! - Ok, JTB, i'll let ya know! - I'm gonna go with the clanky chorus sound from the 'Use Your Illusion' period I think. I did actually think of something else that helps get *that* sound too... tune down to Eb. The tone of the bass will change closer to what you are after.
