2.
It's well worth it. His basses are absolutely brilliant. I was offered endorsements through Warwick and Spector with 50% discounts and to me, it still made more sense to get Jon to build mine. There is the luxury of having the time to wait to save the cash and not to mention the fact that the bass is built totally to your spec. When you add to that the fact that his work is second to nothing that I personally have comapred it to, it's a no brainer. Also Jon is an absolutely top bloke and totally helpful and isn't afraid to take on a challenge. For instance he informed me that he had never done an LED backlit headstock before, but was more than happy to do it on mine. Seriously, if you are thinking about going with Jon, either go to his workshop or contact someone in your area to arrange to have a play. It's well worth your time
Likewise, + one billion million trillion gazzillion bajillion....... very proud endorser!!

  4. Hey all, Yeah, it is difficult to moderate the Classified forums. It's not a job for the feint hearted! - It would be great if bumps were kept to a minimum - As the T&Cs kinda suggest. But then, it appears that quite a few people don't read them.. or forget them.,. or don't care as it's 'not like they have to pay for the use of the classifieds or anything' etc etc. I don't think Ped and CK want to see the classifieds broken down into smaller subforums (like, one specifically for effects, one for amps etc) ... but it could help with alleviating the high turn over of posts as everyone wants their posts at the top of the page. Whilst we're on the subject, I'm glad to see there has been less trouble on the classifieds recently. I saw quite a few people getting narky on posts at the end of last year.. This forum works really well, whilst everyone is civil and friendly. I don't think the admins want to start imposing fees and extra T&C's to keep things running smoothly.
  5. I was simply told 'The electronics have been improved' by one of the tech guys. There's certainly a difference in the switching/ bypass circuitry and the newer version has additional gain stages for the line level/ instrument level output. I've not had either open to take a look at, so unfortunately couldn't comment further.

    POD X3 Live

I've got an X3 Live on the way to try out...... look out for a report back when I have given it a thrashing!
  7.
OH you lucky person you, some of us have been waiting 13 months!
This *is* month 13 for me lol lol ;o)

    POD X3 Live
Dood, could please link me those reviews? Im very curious if my impressions about this unit are shared by more people, specifically the quality of the compressor. You know, sometimes trying to be fair could be complicated, we all have personal tastes that might affect the final evaluation. Thank you very much!
I literally just googled 'Pod X3 Live Review' and found several links, including the usual Harmony-Central stuff. I believe others have mentioned the Compressor. Both PED and I agree, as we both loved the comp on the Pod XT Pro. Stupidly, I sold my rack.. but I am feelin' the love over the Dual signal paths, as this is a philosophy that I have always followed in my bass gear. Two signals mixed together, one dirty, one EQ'd clean. Doing it virtually makes sense to me, as I am always pulling my rig to bits to try new things. It will be fun to be able to slot a new 'amp' in the signal path just by hitting a button! My routing options at present come from mixing inputs and chains on my TC G-Force. If the X3 really is as good as it describes, the TC could well be staying at home! - Certainly, the UX-2 interface with POD Farm sounds awesome and I know that my guitarist Jamie used the UX-2 to lay down guitar parts for one of the BioMechanical album releases and then reamping in the studio. The X3 can do the same for me and will prove to be an invaluable live and studio tool. Found out yesterday the X3L will slot right into my flightcase perfectly! Dammmmmn.. does that mean I have to spend some money now! lol
  9.
arrrrrrgh, all these shukers - all ive seen of mine is the unpainted body shape months ago
Heh.. same here matey! I am hoping to see some pictures of mine soon though, I had a mail from Jon last month to expect some images.
  10. Awesome! Thats great news! I've been watching this one with interest.. I want to know how you get on all MIDI'd up!
  11. OhMyGod.org.uk! Can't wait to see it!
  12. I'll chime in quickly and say that I still really love my Markbass F1 / Aguilar GS112 combination for quiet rehearsals. I was amazed at the first bass bash when I heard Alan (NiceGuyHomer) using an LMII with 2 GS122's.. I wouldn't mind giving two Gs212's a go together either! Lookin' forward to hearing the review!

    POD X3 Live

Hey Daniel! Thanks for the PM and the review. Very much appreciated. You have certainly picked up on some points that had been mentioned in other reviews I have seen, but wasn't aware of the broken screen issues!! That's rather alarming and yes, as you say unfortunately a plastic case isn't so good as a decent metal one. I currently use a rack system with a Roland FC200 foot controller. The controller is a metal construction and even after a good few years shows no battle scars.. just needs a bit of a wipe clean! I'm wondering if keeping the X3L in a case will help protect it, or if I should be looking at getting the pro version in a rack. Kinda put off with the enormo' 3u rack size tho... Hmmm.. something to think about! Other than that, I have been using my Line 6 UX2 and love it. The sounds comin off it are great and would love to replicate the dual sound possibilities live.. the X3L being the obvious choice. I don't really fancy messing about getting the 'bean' into a custom rack case either. Thanks again, plenty of food for thought there!

    POD X3 Live

Hey everyone.... I'm tempting myself to grab the Line 6 X3 Live... Anyone tired it, now that it has been out a while? I'm looking for bass related reviews! Dood.
  15.
Thought there was going to be a picture based update... Eude
Yeah come on dood! Where are these damn pictures!!!??? Heh heh.... I'm looking forward to them coming through!!!
  16. It has to be Ear Protection .. ok.. so it's not specifically 'bass' kit.. but how many people spend hundreds maybe thousands of pounds on bass gear yet *still* insist on spending as little as possible on looking after their ears? (Or not spending anything at all on them!)
  17.
Always the problem with extended range headless basses - it's hard finding any decent hardware to take thick strings and the cost of commisioning stuff can prove to be uneconomical. What worries me the most about Doodle's headstock is the constuction; whilst it is fine under normal tension, the design of that headstock looks like it could be prone to breaking if it was knocked - especially as the amount of wood between the truss rod slot and the edge of the neck isn't that great. It may be worth suggesting to Jon in future builds that the truss rod access is at the body end (I see a few manufacturers have got smart to this on bass) and the headstock sports a considerable volute (a similar approach was taken by Gibson when they modified their headstocks on Les Pauls and the like) when there is so much tension on the neck with minimal supporting wood. Of course, the downside is more mass at the headstock... I'm not criticising anybody's bass or Jon's worksmanship in way - it's just a bit of friendly advice! - and a tricky design problem with no ideal solution!
Hi! no, I understand, not a criticism. However, the neck on my 7 string is a a seven piece laminate block featuring wenge, which is, as you may already know, a very hard wood. (less prone to breakage) - The tilt back headstock in this case (unlike Gibson guitars for example) isn't a seperate piece of wood. (Which is where a fair amount of weakness, and said headstock breakages appeared on those guitars.) Furthermore, with reference to the cut out for the truss rods, on Doodle, the slots are infact very small, with just enough room to get a key in, thus not taking too much wood away from the headstock construction. I think this makes for a strong joint and I suspect the chances of breakage are very minimal. I think the extra neck width probably adds to the strength of construction around the nut area of the neck too. In short, I'm sure Jon has looked at this 'tricky design problem' already and tackled any areas of weakness. Good thoughts for discussion though.
  18.
Dividing ability is a lesser concern than the current position, which is a distinct lack of an appropriate section for new members to engage in debates with their beginner peer group and seek advice from the more experienced (without people wading in to throw missiles from the peanut gallery). Beginners want to primarily learn to play, not engage in endless technical debates.
It does make me think that sometimes people are afraid to ask questions in case they get flamed or berated.. but, we know that sort of flaming behaviour is down to a minority who can't seem to engage in communication in an adult fashion and they should be ignored. I really want everyone to be able to be included in the forum and not to feel that they will be leapt on for asking a simple question.
  19. I'm off to sell granny. I would LOVE one of these! I own an F1 already and the updated EQ on the F500 would be a bonus!
  20.
*cough*X3*cough*
Shhhhhhhhhhh ;o) lol
  21.
I'm quite surprised you didn't go headless on your 7. I'm going to be honest, the headstock on your 7 scares me.
Looking back on it, now that I have been playing Doodle a while, headless would have been the better move.. However, the main problem is the 175 string. It's BIG lol! - I guess I could have had a keyless headstock, that could have worked. On the flipside... it's rather funny watching punters trying to count how many keys I have, so that they can come up after the gig and say 'ooo-aaah! I ain't seen wun o' thum befaaar!' he he he!! Jon supplied me with a set of ultralite tuning keys for Doodle. Seven normal keys, even tough small are actually quite heavy when they are at the end of a long neck. The new keys produced a marked improvement in weight distribution, not to mention less shoulder ache after 2 hours of playing!!!
  22.
Thanks bud, I did indeed. Sorry for the slight side-track, what mischief are you up to with your rig? Mark
Good stuff! glad to hear it! Well, I have been toying with my Line6 UX2, running two rigs together to get a sound I like, which is suited to the music we;re doing.. I kinda fancy emulating that live ;o) However, what ever I do, I really need flexiility too, so will be looking at MIDI controllable gear!
  23.
I'll wait until she's been cleaned up before taking a look. No birthing shots for me please I'm quite looking forward to seeing how this bass turns out.
You're looking forward to it??? lol... I'm quite positively chomping at the bit to get this one home for some serious noodling! Yup, I can't wait to see pics.. it has been a while since the the first and only picture I have had of the rough body shape, shown earlier in this thread.
I was at Jon's on the 22nd of December to pick my Fender Jazz that he'd worked on for me. I was dying to ask him for a look at Lil' Doodle and also Kiwi's bass, but I decided against it, if he'd offered though I would have taken him up on it. Can't wait to see these two. I played my Shuker 6er headless yesterday, it is sooooo sweet and by far the best Bass I have ever owned.
Hey John... yes, I really loved your gorgeous blonde beauty! WHAT a tone!!! I love my 7 string to bits and to have a pair of Shukers again is simply going to be great.. I *know* my new headless is going to be amazing.. that is pretty much a given, when Mr Shuker is involved.. So close.. yet so far!!! I'll post the pictures of the bass when they arrive.. hopefully any day now.
  24.
Glad you gone for the headless this time. Looking forward to the birthing shots.
Interestingly, the first time I ever went to see Jon, several years ago, I'd asked him to build me a headless, but I changed my mind and had a headstock on my first Shuker.. funny how things work out!! lol
