1.
Oh Dan, that reminds me so much of a Tobias...coincidence?
Steve! Another eagle eyed one amongst the clan! Yes indeed! More than a passing resemblance to my ole 6 string! I'll have to grab a pic to show where i got my ideas from! I played Tobias basses for many years and as much as they were 'nearly' right.. they still fell short of what I needed. The wood choices are pretty much the same. This one has White Ash wings, whereas my toboas basses were Maple. I have once again gone with a Birds Eye board, to match my other Shuker.
  2. It's alsacorp's stuff, but we got it through a UK distributor. Yeah, there were so many finishes I could have had! I nearly went for the Hologram/Chrome finish!!! - I was even more tempted by the temperature sensitive coating as well! That would have looked pretty mad I think! The flip to my eyes looked the most classy though. - It's ideal, as I could never choose one single solid colour for a bass!!!
  3.
Same paintjob then?
Hell yeah! One reason was that it is very expensive to buy and it seemed a shame to waste so much left over from Doodle. The flip paint itself is actually an opaque paint and is very dependent on the colour of the undercoat for the flip finish. Jon did try some different undercoats to see how they came out, but the flip lost it's 'effect' with lighter choices. Hence, both basses will have the same flip. One cool thing about it though, is even though it is the same paint, the flip never goes on the same way twice. ( You can never repair a flip paint job, you have to start again) .. which means for me, if both basses were stood together, one might look green, the other purple.. until you walk past and they change colour in front of your eyes! *insert spooky music* lol
  4.
Sally is taking shape... see that you've kept with your signature dot inlays!
Ah yes! Well spotted, it's not totally clear in the pics, but as many of my 'signature' options/ specs as possible have been carried over to the new bass, Including the dot inlays! I think the basses will look great together, a 'matched pair' as it were.
  5. Hey everyone!!! Yes, sorry about the wait.. I meant to upload some pictures but had some other stuff to do first! I have had a reply back from Jon. The pics below are 'how the bass was' a while back apparently, as the finish should have gone on last week according to the email. We should be looking at a completion date in the very near future! I can't believe these are the first pics I have had in over a year! - ok.. withoot farthur a-doooo, Here's Baby Doodle lookin' a bit nekkid. Note: These are just rough pics; the 'stuff' you can see on the wood is just products, not actually damage to the bass!
  6. ......... Drum Roll........
  7.
I thought a lot of Duff's sound came from a MXR M-80 pedal

I think that has been more to do with Velvet Revolver and that over driven sound rather than the old Guns stuff, I say that 'cos that pedal ain't been around that long! Also to point out what Dood said, I think the P & J pickup configuaration is a lot to do with the sound also. Dood - let us know how you get on nailing the Duff sound, am interested to hear. Will you go for the really 'clanky' chourusy sound or the more subtle/traditional Duff sound? JTB
I watched an interview with Duff on YouPube and he didnt mention the M80 at all.. which I thought strange. The pedal is sooo good though! - Ok, JTB, i'll let ya know! - I'm gonna go with the clanky chorus sound from the 'Use Your Illusion' period I think. I did actually think of something else that helps get *that* sound too... tune down to Eb. The tone of the bass will change closer to what you are after.
  8.
One of the reasons why I bought this bass (and other basses) is that life is already full with arguements and discussions about anything...Every now I then I deserve something as an antidote against all the crap I have to endure. This Celinder will make me forget certain things while I'm playing. It would be nice that with the sale of this bass this whole topic thing stops and that we bring out the best in eachother.. So do me favour and don't make me see this bass as an object of discussions etc... I just want to play it. Thanks and hope you all enjoy this site best regards Geert
Geert, that's some fine words. Shame there's a small group of people who just wanna cause trouble all the time - so it's great to see people rise above it and remember why we are here on the forum. With that, I'm closing this thread .. Time to move on...
  9. Another +1 for Kevin. Recently sold my GForce to him and had a good natter about all things bass! - Next time we'll have that coffee mate! ;o) Top chap.
  10. YOu'll be able to get a pretty good replica with a Pod XT or X3 ;o) - Have you spotted the Jazz Bass Special for sale on here? That'll help you nail that all important Duff tone.. Don't forget, his Jazz Bass Specials had Seymour Duncan pups in, not stock which can affect the tone too. Rotosound strings... and I understand for his signature chorus sound he used an old Yamaha SPX-90? - Again, the POD can mimic the effects and dirt suitably. Hmmm.. I might go try that later with my very own Jazz Bass Special! YAY!
  11. I own the active version of the Jazz Bass Special. (also in red) Mine is a 1989 and it *still* plays like new! Sooooo nice! £400 for an 87 JBS is a bargain! - I'll even put money on them being better than the new McKagan basses. Lovin the CIJ ;o)
  12.
This IS the only actual REAL cutting edge of Bassplaying, right now.
Not that it needs any introduction... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=137 ;o) But I find the low F# very useful and aurally exciting (??) when those low notes make my Hifi sub sing! - I have played in bands with the same keyboard player for years now. He's an amazing player and really likes to make use of his full range of sounds. Naturally, when he sweeps down in to those sub bass tones, I wanna be there too. It's another reason why I put Doodle together with Jon. So, yeah.. low F# then!
  13. I'll take a look at the monitors.. What price are you thinking?
  14. nuffin'! My hair has been torn out and I have chewed all my toys.
  15.
Hey folks..... Here's the situation. Have space issues in my house, and don't play all that often any more; and I love the ashdown sound i get from my RPM1. However my plans to save up and buy a new ABM combo are all but over as I can't shift my rack with the RPM1 and a Hartke HA4000 in it. I have a few gigs coming up and my options for borrowing a cab/amps have dried up and i can't really afford the expense of a short term hire. Is it crazy to consider building an active 2x12 in the style of the Aguilar GS212 to use as a cab? Using the ideas i've picked up and the pictures i've seen from the DIY thread and this one [post="0"]active cab link[/post] I have electronics and wood experts (namely my old man and his BT engineer friend who has built PA systems) willing to help. Is this a good short term option? Or does anyone know anyone who fancies an RPM1 and a HA4000? lol Cheers fellas J
Easy, buy / build your 2x12 then buy one of these http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/ClassD/ClassD.htm . Literally cut the hole in the cab, wire up the speaker terminals and the screw the module in place. Al the power and input options are taken care of on the face panel.. And for 600W??? Thats very cheap! I owned one and it was brilliant. I'm actually thinking of getting another for my GS112. I made the mistake of selling the first one! DOH!!! BK are extremely good, by the way.. but there are other companies out there making modules that you could buy, such as Hypex and ColdAmp.
  16.
after finally getting my hands on Doodle yesterday evening (WHAT a neck. WHAAAAT a fabulous neck. Ill say it again. WHAAAAAAAAAAAT a fabulous neck!!!!) im really looking forward to seeing this DJV!
Was good to hang out mate! Thanks for the tea! Thanks for the kind words! Doodle is a bit of a luverllee eh! - yeah, I'll be very happy to see the bass too! I've no idea what it looks like!
  17. BUMP! Suitable offers entertained for pick up...
  18.
Hey dood, if you want that big Amp, I will take your 502 . Greetings from Germany, martin
Thanks, but it wasn't my 502! It was on sale in the Gallery when I got the 610.
  19. Yeah, i played the 502 into my UL610 at the Gallery.. very impressive.. so the 902 will be far better from a power perspective.
  20. Good grief!! Would go very nicely with an Epifani UL610 ;O) - Can a single channel be run on it's own? Could prove to be a great upgrade to my F1.. hmmm!
  21.
Yep, Acmes are only direct from the USA. Great cabs and unbeatable if you want to go really low. The curious thing about AccuGrooves is they claim to be 'audiophile on steroids' but all the AccuGroove cabs sound different to each other, so how can they be all that uncoloured? This is where it gets interesting! If you want to get a nice sounding tweetery top-end then you either need a midrange driver and a nice small tweeter or a single huge tweeter (plus a well-designed crossover). If you use a dome tweeter then either you need to match it with low sensitivity woofers and pad back your mid or accept that it won't be loud enough to get flat response. You could use two but it doesn't work very well because the wavelengths are too short to couple properly. If you use a normal sized tweeter with a woofer you end up with a serious gap in the power (sum of on and off-axis) response and either higher distortion levels due to hitting it with lower frequency power or a gap in on-axis response. Alex
He he he!!! Now, why did I think it wasn't going to be as easy as I'd hoped!! - It'd be inetresting to see what my options could be.
  22. ***Speechless*** .................. ok, I have composed myself now!! Steve, Jon... what a beautiful bass!!! I can't fault it!! Looking forward to hearing it!! Congratulations!!
  23. Incidently, for those who give a monkeys and have an interest in the Epi gear.. I had a very quick snout at the Epi crossover and I think it's a 3rd Order C/L network. The Accugroove TRI210L IIRC was only a first order 'in line' 3.3uF Audio cap by Dayton to the Audax Tweeters. (Not forgetting the reseting fuse and attenuator)
  24.
I'd like to try one or two. I'm looking for something super uncoloured sounding, I'm probably going to go for a couple of Accugrooves, but I'm kind of interested in Acmes, they always get mentioned when people talk about uncoloured and transparent sounding cabs. I'd be using my Epifani head with them.
Kevin, I have owned the TRI210L by Accugroove. A really sweet cabinet. Very impressive and detailed in the top end. I would suggest if you are gonna go for an Accu', then get one of the bigger cabs, or at least a pair of small ones. Just my thoughts really. Looking at TalkBass, the Jr apears to be the happy medium between size and tone. Personally, I would have loved to have given the Whappo a twirl, but didn't get a chance. I've also played through an ACME 2x10. I A/B'd it against a Hartke 4.5XL way back.. and to be honest, Both cabinets appeared similar in volume. The Hartke is only about 98dB IIRC.. but I used to happily power one or two of those with my Ampeg SVT 2 Pro (300W) and have little or no problems keeping up with the rest of the band. - I'd be really tempted by the ACME 4x10's! I think they'd be amazing! Speshly driven hard with a stonking power amp! - Oh dear.. a bout of GAS coming lol!! Stepping back a little... Has anyone else tried sticking HiFi into their Epifani UL cabs? - I have come to realise that I'm not 100% happy with the inherent tone (or EQ) of the tweeter. There was always something I wasn't 100% sure about and it was only when I decided to set up my Amp and Cab for a 'flatter' response that I noticed an annoying peak in the Horn's response. I grabbed one of my Mission Hifi cabs and uncoupled the BiWire, so I could just use the tweeter with my bass gear . (I turned off the Epifani one) and straight away it sounded WAYYYYY better playing CDs! As it happens, Mission I believe use Audax tweeters, that Accugroove and ACME use. (well.. same make.. different model). I feel that it is either the tweeter itself, or the tuning of the crossover that has the resonant peak to it. Either way, it now annoys me!! ALL THE TIME! - I'm thinking as far as a little upgrade... or maybe sorting out some kind of top box to use.. But I think I'm going to grab maself a couple of Audax (or similar) tweeters to see if it makes any difference. I just need to find out how I will get a tweeter to match the 104dB sensitivity of the Epi' cab. Food for thought Kev! - It might not be the cab you wanna upgrade!! p.s. - yeah, you need to order ACME directly.. but they do a no quibble return.. but the cost of shipping may be a pain in the backside, if you don't like 'em!
