Having read lots of advice on the forums I still dont know how to choose what to buy! Ive had some lessons on a hired acoustic DB but would like to buy an EUB I found shops where I could try a Stagg and a NS WAV, but is there anywhere to have an Eminence demonstrated in the South or Midlands in England?
Hi, These instruments can all be rather expensive and i for example have been looking for some time now and with the feel and sound being paramount, i have tried many shop available EUB's but finall bought a Clifton as it was in my price range albeit second hand. Yes, it's a bespoke bass but it feels and gives the acoustic sounds that a traditional bass gives, so in my opinion i narrowed my chices down and found something realistic. http://www.cliftonbasses.co.uk/upright.html On the other hand, i did try one of these bases http://www.bespokebasses.co.uk/ I loved it, and it played superbly, and sounded even more authentic than my Clifton, but a tad out of my price range no matter how i tried to fiddle the account You dont get much bass for your money, but in terms of sound and playability, its right up there. You can hear the sound clips on the website and take it from there, as in reality they sound the same from the instrument itself. My advice is certainly try before you buy and make sure all the sounds are there and the instrument is not a dog to play Steve
the seller is new kings road guitar shop in london, they specialise in selling vintage and rare instruments silly high prices. they have a few nice old fenders on ebay at the moment but they are always over priced. you could probably haggle it down a fair bit.. but theres always someone out there with more money than sense who won't question the price. if i had the money i'd definitly buy it!
I actually played this bass about three weekas ago and it plays remarkably well with a nice tone. It has that beaten up used feel to it also but not a dog to play like others i have tried. As for the 10k tag on the bass, well its difficult to say what it is that attracts such a price, apart from apealing to the "I've just got to have it " type of person. In todays climate i really wouldn't know its value but having said that i would find it hard to understand that price on any bass, that just plays ok and sounds as it should. Steve

It would appear now that my support requests are being ignored, so, hence the look around, but thanks anyway Steve

They are just a regular set of effectively analogue organ pedals which have all the connectors and switches working just the output needs to go into a converter in order to process and talk to a sound module. Thats where the problem lies. The converter i bought from a source on the net doesnt seem to function and my tech support emails are being ignored, so i cant tell if the item is DOA or what?

Bump for you lot.....there must be a techie out there ???
Wals have thier own sound that no other bass can produce, i've heard close but not the same, as for a starting price of £3200 it does seem a little steep but check the price of an alembic or a ken smith. There is something missing from the new wals though, the new necks are constructed using maple & mahogany, the original wals used hornbeam in the centre of thier necks. I would be interested to know if that affects the tone ??
When i had my two made in the late 90's I had a real choice of the woods that were used. I was certain of the sounds i wanted and was advised by Pete accordingly at the time and when they were finished the fretless was unbelievable in its tone and swell, its a real singer in both mine and Petes/Pauls opinion. My fretted was equally as stunning, sharp clear and punchy. I will get round to putting them in the porn section soon. They have both performed faultlessly over the years and having tried similar, i find that there are very few comparisons on the market. I forget what i paid for mine but had two made at the same time. It is down to what you like and how it feels as an instrument, and the less you have to fight with it the better. With regard to eq etc, you can always get a great sound in whatever context and unlike some other custom builds you dont get bogged down with having too much eq.... I think that the standards will be the same if not improved as things move on so i doubt very much the quality will diminish in any kind of takeover. I think people need to look at it as a continuation of a product with eventual advancements i am sure, as opposed to a takeover and rebadge which it certainly is not. They had been in the past and still will be in for the longhaul!!

Hi All, Does anyone here know of, or have an adapter that can convert an old set of organ bass pedals to be MIDI compatible. I have sourced one kit from the net but despite waiting 6 or more weeks for the item, it appears to be DOA Has anyone tinkered with their own home project or actually made a converter or can point me in the right direction with results they can share with me?? Any help would be gratefully received. Steve

Recommend a strap for a killer weight bass.
You could try an Alembic strap (or Moody - they make them for Alembic) - an extremely wide, supple and strong laminated leather strap. Very expensive but a very high quality product. I don't use them because I don't use leather - I've seen them though and if you don't have the ethical problem, then they're about as good as it gets. Italia offer a similar product (the wife and husband team that was Moody split and the husband now trades as Italia).
Italia straps are what i use for my Wals which are fairly weighty. Great product and good leather and they are doing a two for the price of one at the mo. I have not seen anything like them in this country especially the 4 inch width ones that i use. If they area bout, you will certainly pay for them!! Steve -
