1. on the subject of white sparkle, this was my Sterling in said finish.I done a deal with wavydavy on here for his Valenti. He sold the Sterling on ebay for £650 last month and its now on the bay at the moment with a BIN of £850,albeit with the original black plate. I'd love it back but not at that price

  2. nig and gareth...really great pics. I see them and I want another G&L lol - nig havent you got some more to show?

Matt, what a great looking L2K.ditto odub's Asat semi-hollow. if I can post up an ex bass of mine, then this semi hollow now with tonyf is just too lush for words. I would trade back this bass in a heartbeat.

and BB your L2K is the same as the one I had. unfortunately that and the green L-1500 in the poor quality pic have both moved on. I'll probably get both again which is all a bit swings and roundabouts and a bit daft but hey GAS! :)

  3.
Dub - is that honeyburst?

Im thinking of having binding, prob not matching headstock, and normal Pickups for that full sound. The factory have a blueburst and a sunburst with binding in right now, but I think I can wait the 8 - 12 weeks for one to be made...

What ultimate G&L would you go for then?
that pic is just a regular sunburst, the JB-2 on the right in the pic below is honeyburst I think and would be my ultimate G&L just the same as that apart from I'd want a matching headstock

I'm pretty sure this L-2000 is honeyburst too

and not sure what colour this is but as above, the gun oil tint neck is stunning

and the single coil option still gives the full sound of the buckers. the middle 2 way switch is changed to a 3 way giving series/single coil/parallel. this setting uses either of the two outside coils or both dependant on the pickup selector.

    cheers

  4.
I got serious GAS for an L2500 now! Cant decide what colour to go for but am gonna get one made, with a flame top, RW board, but just gotta decide on colour, I really like these 2 so far...
thats a cracking looking pair of 5s. hows about a plain old burst? (not mine - I wish)

you thinking of any other options? (gun oil tint neck, matching headstock etc)

it might also be worth checking if you can get the single coil option on the L2500 :)

I'm sure it will be a fantastic bass whatever you go with

  5. AFAIK here are a few variations on the Tribute badging

correct me if I'm wrong btw -

1/ The first ones had "Tribute" in large and "by G&L" in small on the headstock and "Tribute" embossed bridge. made in Korea
2/Later ones with "G&L" in large and "tribute series" in small on the headstock. again "tribute" embossed bridge and again made in korea.
3/The Indonesian ones have G&L in large on the headstock with "tribute series "in smaller lettering and "G&L" embossed bridge

there may have been others but I havent seen any. I had a later Korean L-2000 same as no2 above. It was an excellent bass and I was wrong letting it go.

Tribute wise, other than an L-2000/L-2500 there are the SB2 and JB-2 models which are both passive. The JB-2 is the only current G&L bass not to have MFD pickups, having 2 alnico single coils. The Tributes are limited option wise (no maple board on SB-2,only 2 finishes on JB-2 and SB-2 etc)

All of the above models are made in the USA also and have loads of options.

USA only models are the Asat & Asat semi-hollow basses (same sounds as an L-2000),L-1500 (one pickup like stingray with bags of growl) and L-1505 which is the 5 string version.

There was also a run of Japanese made Tributes for the market there which were very high quality.Japanese ones are halfway down the page.

  6.
stingray = MAN

    sterling = GIRL :huh:

thats my take on it anways

the sterling has a thinner neck and smaller body, neither of which appeal to me. i think its mostly cosmetic the differences though other than the sterling having the selecter switch that you probably wouldnt use anyways. i dont like the pickguard on the sterling either, just looks like a stingray one has been left next to a radiator...
:) is that why you tried to get my white sparkle Sterling off me back in May?

I've owned both and both are great basses. I'd say the Sterling is the better bass for me because of the neck profile and switching (single coil mode is a useful addition imo) but I'd be just as happy owning a Stingray

  7. love the Stingray..the Sterling I punted a few months back was exactly the same CAR/black/maple combo. Your one is making me GAS for another MM 4 string. and a 2 band too,I always liked the sound of the 2EQ ones.very nice indeed!

  8.
that brings back memories- I used to rehearse with a covers band there back in 1994 -
the rehearsal studio was like a shed in someone's garden, and the roof would leak dripping rainwater onto the floor by the bass amp. hopefully it's improved a lot since then.
me too, when I lived in Iver, just up the road from Langley, the band I was in, used to rehearse in the shed out the back garden from the shop. That would be '90-'92. I recall the shop staff being really friendly too - I bought a Hohner Jack bass and an Aria fretless 5 off them during that time and I dont remember what their openening hours were but I recall somebody coming down to re-open the shop so I could collect the 5 on the way home after doing a couple of hours overtime at the airport so that would have been around 7.30pm.

and I miss living in Iver :) .... it was a lovely place to live

  9.
i love it, as has been said the graphite neck makes a massive difference, i dont think i could go back to wooden now
a tenner says you will :)

your Blue dawn 5 is very nice btw

I had a trans teal 2 band Ray with an early Status graphite MM neck (truss rod adjuster was behind an inlaid plate on the f/board itself). It was a cracking bass. stupidly sold it though

  10. Mods please move this if its in the wrong place,I'm not sure where this should go as the bass isnt mine but theres a guy on the MM forum who lives in Cambridge looking to trade his trans teal/maple SR5 for a maple necked SR4. Cracking looking Stingray 5 and the guy seems genuine(despite his single post) given that he is looking to meet in person and drive half way to meet etc.

Dont know if its just me,but it comes across as a deal someone just has to jump on if you were looking to sell your 4 and get a 5 (and save you a lot of hassle in the process) Theres not much doing this side of the pond on the EBMM boards so a good opportunity to get in there. If you dont want to register at the EBMM forum I'd be happy to make contact with the other fella and pass on contact details etc

  11. amazing! I forgot about those. Bass Central had one up for sale iirc

theres a story behind the bridges on these, Is it that they are 20 years old and were supposed to be the first ever 10 made for the SR5? wish i could remember and I cant be arsed doing a search on the EBMM forum at this time of the night

  12.
Thanks :) they are rather nice. I was going for a blue burst one but i rather like natural ash too. I still prefer my SUB bass, it's a very similar sound but the SUB has that extra bit of oomph, the G&L does play nicer though...
just goes to show how we all perceive tone differently - in a band setting I found my Asat (same electronics)had much more oomph than the Sterling(ok a teeny little less bottom end than a Ray)I had at the time.

No weak G on the G&L and in series with both p/ups on its huge sounding,in parallel with both on it has a great slap tone,in series on the neck p/up in passive mode you can get a woody P sound and in passive/bridge pup and parallel a not too bad burpy J bass sound (new USA L2Ks now have a single coil switching option which can only improve on an already great range of tones)
In isolation/solo'd they may not be spot on in each case but when in a mix with guitars and drums the L2K/Asat do a great job on these standard tones imo.
