With so many on the market I'd only buy a bass that I could pick up and play for 30mins or so. Hamster

If the tone on your bass is too high / bright you could swap the pot for a lower value, say 250k or if the tone is too low / dull try a higher value, say 1meg. I wouldn't be surprised if Fender USA used the same supplier of pots as the licensed copy company. But someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Hamster

If you wanted to get your soldering iron out, make sure that you replace the pots with ones of the same value. Best just use some switch cleaner to smooth out the crackle on the ones you have. If you wanted to do something that would improve your sound, (and presuming you have a J bass) how about this? Speaking from experience, my house got flooded out a couple of years ago - took nearly 3 weeks to pull all the moisture out of the house with 4 industrial dehumidifiers! - I don't think he's going to rush to get everything back in. Hamster

Humidity can be a problem with any wooden instrument. Is your study unusually humid, or is it air conditioned? I know it's 'the wettest June ever', so did the bass get wet/damp before you left it in the study. I wouldn't give it a quick setup until we can figure out why the action changed. Hamster
