Cheers.
New or used, a £250 bass that has great tone and feels good is a better buy than a £500 bass with awful tone that doesn't feel right in your hands. With so many on the market I'd only buy a bass that I could pick up and play for 30mins or so. Hamster
 2.
What do people think the going rate for a used but in ver good condition mim fender jazz 5 should be. Cheers! Alex.
As long as it's not in a horrible colour, £275 - £300 tops. You can buy them new for £362 - £373 Hamster
 3.
I did also wonder coz it is a squier and ive heard that squier tone pots are a bit cheap and nasty
There isn't much inside a tone or volume pot to improve upon, it's just a simple variable resistor. If the tone on your bass is too high / bright you could swap the pot for a lower value, say 250k or if the tone is too low / dull try a higher value, say 1meg. I wouldn't be surprised if Fender USA used the same supplier of pots as the licensed copy company. But someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Hamster

Now, does anyone know if the cones will have been irrepairably damaged? is there anything I could or should do? Most of it appears to be on the grill but stands to reason that some will have penetrated.
I caught one sneaking in my house - the next photo in the series is tooooooooooo grusome to post Hamster

 6.
Hi there, Have just swapped the pick ups in my squier for some seymour duncans, bass sounds better for it , however I was wondering whether it would make any improvement to the tone if i changed the pots on the bass , the person who replaced the pick ups for me said that apart from getting rid of the slight crackle when i turn the tone knob changing the pots would only make a small difference tone wise, Is this true? I also know nothing at all about pots etc and dont know a tone pot from a volume pot and was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction with regards to buying some new pots
I agree with the advice you've been given - a minimal difference. If you wanted to get your soldering iron out, make sure that you replace the pots with ones of the same value. Best just use some switch cleaner to smooth out the crackle on the ones you have. If you wanted to do something that would improve your sound, (and presuming you have a J bass) how about this? 7. Isn't the 'Roberts' brand just a cheap far eastern import. I've looked at the guit@r valve amps they also market, cheap and nasty. Hamster

I however have a non-technical brain and the Farnell website proved way too complicated for my limited intelligence.. Anyway good to be back in the "care in the (gated?) community" programme once more. It's scary out there.... 22.
I took my Tokai Jazz along to practice, I got setup there, when to play a bit and noticed the action on the g string (oo-err) was too low to play it atall at the first fret, I do play with a low action normally, but obviously not that low! I hadn't played it since last week (Thursday) and it's been in it's case since then just downstairs in the study, is humidity likely to be the problem and if I give it a quick setup it's unlikely to happen again? Tonight I phoned my house and got someone to drop off my warwick to use instead, that was fine (but has been in its bag for weeks in my room).
Gut reaction is it's nothing to do with humidity, as an increase in moisture in the air would make your wood expand and raise the action. Humidity can be a problem with any wooden instrument. Is your study unusually humid, or is it air conditioned? I know it's 'the wettest June ever', so did the bass get wet/damp before you left it in the study. I wouldn't give it a quick setup until we can figure out why the action changed. Hamster
