1. Bob I ran this past a friend who repairs amps, and these are his thoughts without seeing the guitar & amp on his bench:>
It is likely that the not-v-well-screened guitar is picking up hum induced in his body. Bodies are good at picking up hum and transmitting it. Put your hand near the tip of a jack with the other end in the input and you'll hear it. Earth yourself on the sleeve with the other hand & it goes away. He's earthing himself & his body's hum when he touches the various earths he mentions. Try walking away from the guitar and see if it stops. Not an awful lot you can do if it does, unless earthed pickup covers are a possibility. Conductive paint inside the cavities with a screw and earth wire might help, you can often get the paint from guitar parts suppliers.
2. My intonation is spot on, I don't usually tune up that way - but I suppose I will if it'll save a few squid. Is the Peterson strobostomp the one with a sort of blue LCD display panel? Hamster
  3.
http://www.fliptops.net/index.htm Fantastic source for parts & expert info on vintage Ampegs.
Added - cheers!
  4. Having migrated to 5 strings I find my Boss TU-2 sometimes finds it dificult to lock onto a low B. I don't want to go to a rack mounted tuner, so what's the best pedal for me? Taverymuchindeed. Hamster
  5. That is a really sweet bass Steve - it sounds great on stage and that Sadowsky preamp is a perfect compliment to it. Hamster
  6.
My mate's band have a female bassist: http://www.myspace.com/theofficialkarassband
Ditto - and Jo is a very fluid player (and is quite well known to one of our forum members!) I hate him! - so young yet so good! Hamster
  7. Well, I bought some cables from this guy Bayou before I knew OBBM offered the service. All I can say is that Bayou cables are excellent. Hamster
  8.
I've got a 1964 Fender Bassman 50 which has the gold thread grille cloth; does anyone know where I can buy matching cloth for my 2 x 12 cabinet. So far all I can find is the silver thread, which just doesn't quite look right. The photo left is of my Fender Bassman 100 with 2 x 12 cab. Cheers Charla
You could try here http://www.ampwares.com Hamster
  9. Don't think it was. More likely to have been Samuel Gooden. Hamster
  10.
You'll be pretty sorted for a lightweight rig with that head and the Secos.
I've just spent a month experimenting with different combinations of cabinet lining in the Secos. After several bad sounding combinations, they now both sound better than ever, especially the 1x15 - much more low-end punch. I'm going to experiment with the Ashdown and it's programming, although I'm pretty happy with the Eden WT550.
  11. I picked up one of these at Soundcontrol during lunchbreak for £199. Almost bought more to flog on ebay following the Crate Powerblock earner! Hamster
  12. FC - added into new Australian Luthiers section!! - Thanks Paul - I presume you're looking at using Ben Crowe at Crimson Guitars, It's only up the road from you so pop in and see if he can do voodoo on the banana bass. Hamster
  13. Thanks for the replies all. I'm going to have a look at that H2 if it comes out soon. Boss Micro also looks the business. I'm off down Denmark street / Tottenham court road on Friday to see if I can play with them all.

    Post counts

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, And remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly & clearly; and listen to others, even the dull & ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud & aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain & bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing future of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity & disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue & loneliness. Beyond wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees & the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours & aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery & broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful, Strive to be happy, And remember - the only cure for Obsessive Compulsive Post-Counting Disorder is to post! 17.
Why do people use compression? Is it really necessary? I would look into buying one if I could see the point in getting it for live use.....I can see why studios use them, obviously, but live?
It all depends on what sound you want for each song. IIRC Billy Sheehan uses a lot compression and raves about his twin Ashly Audio SC 50 Compressors (which I think are out of production?) Hamster
  18.
iv gt a interview in bass guitar magazine somwhere ill try n find it...all i can remeber is he takes all his control knobs off his pbass and controls it all via a volume pedal and leaves the tone full.
I think it was in Bass Guitar, he wires his pickups straight to the volume pedal, bypassing the tone controls on the bass. IIRC the volume pedal is the only pedal he uses, with any fuzz/distortion coming from cranking up the Ampeg amp. Hamster
  19. I have an Audere fitted to my Lakland - a 3ZB preamp - it's really good. It really brings out the tone of the bass without adding noise or colouration. Let us know how you get on with the JZ model. Hamster
  20.
That's the bass I learned to play on. Or the bass I used when I first started to play
My first bass was also a Westone - a IIA IIRC. Hamster
  21. DR High Beam 5 String 45-125 - from wherever I can get them at a good price! Hamster
  22. Have you tried a 2mm hex key? Hamster
