Fran - You shouldn't be having any more problems as the server and website is now running at full speed (and has been for well over a week) Any problems are now most likely at your end. As for changing skins and your allusion "that the mods will not be happy"? - You go on to state that you realise that this will essentially make no difference in revenue - so why make the point in the first place? I've used the standard IP skin - it makes no difference in speed for me.

I've looked at all the forum settings again - they seem ok so I'm a bit stumped at this end? Has anyone with problems tried logging out, clearing your cache and cookies and logging on and trying again? Is it the same for all browsers?

There are 2 main ways to display an image/photo - which one are you having trouble with? 1. - Upload a file and attach it: or 2. - Direct link - just click on 'image' (the little green screen on your posting toolbar) and paste the url from an account like photobucket:into it:

To open a link in a new window, I just click my centre mouse button, however the forum software uses a javascript to force links to open in a new window. If the javascript doesn't work, I'll have to ask Ben to look at that one. User-name pop-ups - I'll see what members think about that, as it is quite useful. Speed - Ben has ironed out the new software, and with double the server size/speed we're now faster than we have ever been. I'm assured by Ben (who has the graphs to prove it) that any remaining speed problems are almost certainly at the user's end.
Hi - sorry this has not worked for me I'm afraid. And they're not getting caught up in Spam Filter etc .... Any other suggestions?
PM me your correct email address and I'll see if it's what we have in the engine room.

Speed update: Ben has resolved the speed issues with the server, which is now running as it should be. It's been tested and all the graphs/results say we are good now. Any further speed issues are now almost certainly at the users end.
Er... Java and Javascript are not the same thing...
I disagree - they both have 'Java' in them and I was stroking my beard at the time...........

It would happen on any site where Google had that a particular type of ad running I suppose - not sure We might be able to help by tweaking how the ads display here, but that's a little bit too past my techy comfort zone, so I'll ask someone who knows what they're doing!

Ummmmmmm - [thoughtful beard stroking mode] - When I view this site from work on IE none of the profile pics next to posts look right to me and user names and member title overlap each other. Could it be a browser issue? - What are you guys using? The cropping is done with a javascript, so maybe a Java issue - check you are up to date - http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp [/thoughtful beard stroking mode]

I've looked at the board settings and everything should be ok. Cropping is set for user adjustment (not auto). Following photo url extensions are allowed - .gif .jpg .jpeg .png It seems to work for me ok, so I'm a bit stumped! Clearing cache is a good think to do, as is flushing your dns as the new forum software has restructured the website and the info stored on your pc's may be pointing to the wrong place.

Hopefully, most things will be resolved soon. Invision themselves have said there have been a few bugs in this version of their forum software and are working on an update. Ben is also working on it from our point of view, and has explained what the problem is here, - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/157299-forum-update-bugs-n-glitches/page__view__findpost__p__1401141 - if you can understand it! Cheers all for putting up with it
I get 'The requested operation requires elevation'. ??
Are you logged on as an administrator?
No I haven't, but is it worth downloading Chrome just for the test? Bear in mind my broadband is Virgin 50meg, fast as ....#### Every other site I visit it's a breeze. (except this )
That's the puzzling thing Fran, and what makes it so hard to identify the problem. I'm 'only' on a 20mb connection and I really haven't had any problem at all accessing this site (or any other) apart from the first couple of days when the database was being transferred. Now that Ben is back from holiday I'm sure the site will be ok for everyone soon. Some people have reported that flushing their cache has helped ( start - run - cmd - ipconfig /flushdns )
-
right... I gave that test another go this time opening a new browser and pasting the link in it starting a new test and got this score, what do I win?
That's a good score with IE! - Did you try Chrome?
-
Tried it on all 4 major Mac browsers. Firefox, Opera and Safari all scored just under 6000 with safari coming out top. Chrome scored over 9000. Looking at the other results though makes me think that the overall speed of the computer will skew the results or not?
The better spec the PC, the better results you will get.
Same glitch as before, if I'm in messages, go home - click View new content - it takes me to members. So far it all seems to be running I'd say twice as fast as it was so yippeee! Great improvement Cheerz, John
I don't have that problem. Have you flushed your DNS? - it might help. Assuming you are using windows: Start Run Type cmd on that line in the new window type ipconfig /flushdns Then restart your PC and see if it helped.
-
OK thanks, now I have to assume IE ain't much cop! Should I go for Chrome?
If you close everything on your PC and just leave 1 browser window open, run the test. At the end of the test it will ask you if you want to do the same test with a different browser and it will give you a url to cut and paste. Do that with IE, Chrome and Firefox, and compare the scores. I almost guarantee Chrome will win.
-
OK I ran the tests. What's a good score? What should I be looking at regarding forum speed?
Depending on what the website is using - HTML/ Javascripts etc it will have an effect on how fast your browser can load the pages. Using those tests uses only sample HTML and scripts to 'score' your browsers ability to deal with these features. Basically the higher the score the better, but if the server is responding slower than your browser, then things slow down. If the browser can't cope with the speed of the server, again things slow down for the end user. Chrome seems to consistantly outperform any edition of IE, and Firefox.
-
I got 273 - IE8, that's all Edit: 20:04 tried my laptop - IE9 score of 1118, is that any good?
With IE7 at work I scored 579 With Chrome at home I scored 7886 Chrome works much faster and better for me.
-
If members are getting different results with different browsers it could have something to do with the add-ons or extensions you have loaded for that browser. This is a testing tool for browser speed - close down all browser windows but one and run the test - You'll have to the test using each browser but it will let you know which is the fastest on your PC. http://clients.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/run.action It takes 5 minutes so have a tea break

New Site Search problem - "-" gets stripped out of search term
Hamster replied to BigBeatNut's topic in Site News
This board version uses a different internal search engine and it looks like when the 'old' forum was merged into this one, some detail like you describe may have been lost. I'll pass on your comments to our tech man, but it will take a back seat while he's trying to figure out why some members have virtually full speed/glitch free forum access and others are really struggling to even post or open a forum.
