1.
Dear All, Apologies in advance if this has been raised and answered elsewhere but if I'm looking to source some small items - specifically a set of 4 new tuning keys - from the States, would I still have to pay the customs clearance charge? I can get my head around the import duty and VAT but if there's an additional £13.00 - £20.00 to pay as well that begins to make a really good price look like a very average one instead. Anyone any experience of a similar purchase? Thanks, Mark
Hi Mark This topic is covered in a sticky here - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=139 Without looking the prices up again, OTTOMH if the value is below £18 you shouldn't incur charges - although they do include the cost of shipping in that! Whatever your final shipped total is over say $40, then add 22% for the import duties etc etc. Cheers Hamster
 2. I'm sure I read somewhere - probably Bill Fitzmaurice's website, that the fundamentals are not as important as the harmonics when looking at reproducing low frequencies. That low A is about 27.5Hz and I doubt you'll find a backline that can spit that out. As Alex says, concentrate on the 55Hz response.
Actually I might have this beat for daft: What are these people on? Interesting string spacing. You could play it with both hands whist sitting down? Hamster
 4. All it needs is an Elvis / Dambusters / Tutankhamun motif and they could sell it in Viz Hamster
 5. The power board problem arose with the last batch of Superfly heads - if yours was bought some time ago, or was NOS you're lucky. I bought one from Soundcontrol when they were knocking them out for £199. It was faulty so I took it back and tried the other 13 Superfly heads they had in stock - they were all defective. It's really noticible when you roll back on the lows and boost the treble. Turn off your tweeters and roll off the highs and you might not notice it. The other Ashdown MAG / ABM heads are also known for the QC problems with the mains transformer burning out, (which also happened with my ABM head.) I won't be buying Ashdown again. Hamster
 6. It's unlikely another Superfly head will be without the same problem. I presume this was a private sale then - and not a physical shop that sells on ebay? How about making a complaint through ebay about being sold defective goods? Hamster
 7.
I recently purchased a Ashdown Superfly bass head. As soon as I turned it on, the head starts emitting a high frequency pitch which is very noticeable, especially at low levels. I tried new leads, basses, speaker connecters and different ohm settings but the noise still remained. When the head is not plugged into anything and turned on it emits no noise, but as soon as its plugged into a cabinet the high pitched noise starts again. Any ideas?
Oh dear - another one. If you use the search function you'll find several threads about the faulty power boards on these amps. There's no quick fix, as there are no replacement boards - just take it back and get a full refund. Hamster
 8. Both of the above suggestions have merit. The TVX 4x10 and HA3500 is quite a good call IMHO, although you might find the cab a bit on the large side to begin with. You can pick up quite a decent Markbass amp for £220 ish secondhand e.g: - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Markbass-Little-Mark...1QQcmdZViewItem which is not a bad price. The Markbass would be again, IMHO an improvement on the HA3500 but with slightly less power and slightly over budget. Having said that, I don't think you would be disappointed with the HA3500. Have some tea and cake and think about it Hamster

 13.
I don't think I'd get away with suggesting a bass was worth as little as £18 - surely they'd immediately assume it was the dumbest attempt at a scam ever - I wondered if declaring the value at something pretty nominal, say, $100, might be the best idea. How much duty are people paying on all these bargain SXes they're importing? J.
No, not quite like that - I meant if the shipping goes above £18. If the combined value of the bass and the shipping costs come to over £18 - guessing $36 dollars, then we are into the tax situation as I explained above. Another way is to ask the guy to get it valued by a bass shop, and then declare that estimate as the value. Hamster

 15.
I think anything that is less than $35 in value doesn't attract any customs or duty charges. (it's something like that, though that might not be the exact value).
IIRC it's £18. If the bass is a gift, the sender must declare the value. You might want to pay the seller $1 for it and get a receipt. You will pay duty on the shipping if it goes above £18, and if the duty payable exceeds £7 then you pay a bit more duty on top of that. Well, something like that anyway Hamster
 16. You could also look at basses for sale on USA sites, like talkbass.com. There are several guys on that forum who have sold several basses and have good feedback there. Just figure out the shipped price and add 22% to that for the various payable duties. You might end up with something very nice within budget. Hamster
 17.
Try the T.bone MB85 which is a decent copy of the classic Shure 58 and a good value for money. I use it for backing vocals on rare occasions and I have blind tested it with an original 58, the one that our singer uses, and you couldn't tell a difference.
+1 on these. If you go for a secondhand 'genuine' SM58 be very careful as the market is full of cheap and nasty (but convincing) chinese copies. Hamster
