1. I'd go for 4 Sovtek 6CA7 and JJ's for the 3 ECC83's. As for changing valves to achieve different tones you wont make a huge difference, but there are simple ways to make bigger adjustments in tone if you want to go that route. If you live anywhere near Guildford I can recommend an excellent valve amp guru - http://www.stevesamps.co.uk/ Hamster
2. Through the right amp/cab that's gotta sound good - well done! Hamster
3.
just out of interest has anybody flown a bass back from the states and did you get stung by customs?
Well worth using the search function on this question. IMHO not a thing to do on the spur of the moment. Hamster
4. Hi Ash - welcome home! Hamster
Yup, you can't go wrong with those three
I'm sure you could find room for a 5 string Stingray Hamster
7.
With only two coats of 50% thinned tung oil there's some remarkable progress and a little bit of sheen. I did do two applications of thinned grainfiller first. Truoil'ing the neck is going well too although there's a long way to go till it's all done.
That's gonna look  when it's finished Hamster
8. Let's hope they've got their QC right this time, or it could be a very short lived range. I've never been keen on the combined knobs/slider idea for the EQ. Hamster
9. So if you get paid out, you get the money back and he keeps the amp which is a reasonably easy fix, or has he sent it back to the courier company? Hamster
10.
just reading all the rage about the SX series from rondomusic i'm very inclined to order an "SX SJB-62QMD BUS" instead of getting the VM jazz and just modding it, it'll probably work out cheaper
Do your math first. Also the woodwork on the SX basses is a very deep amber/orange if you can live with that. Hamster
11. Pearloid - aged, cream or smoke Hamster
12. a +1 on the DR's - they're all good strings, just choose what tone you're after. Hamster
13.
Bet some of you thought this was a youtube thread in the wrong forum! My numerous gear-related google searches have brought me a number of times to www.singingchicken.co.uk, where the prices seem too good to be true. Has anyone actually bought anything from them? They claim to be the web presence of Weymouth Music in Dorset. I'd buy stuff from them but the page looks so cheap and amateurish my scam-alarm is ringing.
I think Paul, the lives in Weymouth - perhaps a short stroll from the shop they are based from? Hamster edit: have you noted that their prices are before VAT?
14. Charming - did you all stay for a few pints and a natter? Hamster

16. Nice job I have the plans to build a couple of Bill's designs - but woodwork is my achilles heel! Hamster
17. I will buy the CD - but not from that website with a dodgy SSL security certificate! Hamster

Hi....

QUOTE (obbm @ Jan 23 2008, 05:29 PM) So here we are. They’ve given me my own bit of Basschat. Over the next couple of days I’ll sort out a price list for my regular cables and some details of the one-offs that I’ve made for people. Is your price list the same as the one on your website - or is there a BC'ers price list with massive discounts? Hamster

21. SD stopped making these switch pickups 'Active EQ' in the mid-'90s. They were replaced them with the Pro-Active series. The little rocker switches on the Active EQ pickups change the sound. Switch 1 shifts the coil resonance. On a Jazz Bass neck pickup, the resonance moves downward from 22 KHz to 6.4 KHz. On a Jazz Bass bridge pickup, it moves downwards from 17 KHz to 4.9 KHz. The effect is to give a more focused sound with a harder attack. Switch 2 gives a broad band bass boost of 4 dB for the Jazz Bass neck pickups, and 5 dB for the Jazz Bass bridge. Hamster Edit - added wiring diagram http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wirin...ctive_jazz_bass
22.
It's also like the old 2nd chance offer, Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I bid on a Land Rover some years ago and was out bid. The winning bidder backed out. Now if memory serves me correct (which it doesn't always) the price droped down to the next highest bid, which was me. My argument was that the winner backed out so all their bids should have been cancelled and thus going down to my starting bid not my highest bid. Hence I didn't accept the offer.
That would be the decent fair and honest thing to do - but remember who you're dealing with! Hamster
23. A belated hello to you too Hamster
