Feeler/Trades. Have added a random price but no idea what it is worth - would rather Trade with me pay a bit extra if required for a PJ with Jazz width neck. Fender Aerodyne, Lakland etc. I tend to undersell things on here so this is focus’s on all the negatives - if I pop bass on eBay it will be far more of a modified USA made Jazz pitch! USA Jazz body but routed for PJ. Neat job and shielded (not copper). Roadworn 90’s USA P neck. Has been extensively used and gigged by previous owner. I have also had it for a while now. It’s a bit battered but is a joy to play. Low action and frets have plenty of life. Neck has been on several different bodies over the years so had several screw holes. A friend who is pretty handy drilled out holes and plugged them and then applied inserts/machine screws. Really secure fit though neck has a slight overhang (about 1mm) in pocket being a 90’s P on a 2000’s J body. Original pickups replaced with passive EMG Geezer Butlers. Babicz string through high mass bridge. No idea what this bitsa is worth but I love it, particularly the neck despite all its flaws. Sadly the old school (I guess it’s a C profile rather than the more modern D) aggravates my RSI. I have hung on for 9 months now but just find J necks much easier. Just testing the waters to see if there would be any interest in this bass. Note photos are old and show bass dismantled and fitted with Tesla’s. These pickups and Copper earthing strip are removed now. I will take more pictures showing fully assembled bass if there is any interest. Thanks

I haven’t been there in a while but I would be cautious about drawing conclusions about average wage in Indonesia. Jakarta is a world away from Borneo or New Guinea .,,,

I don’t think the woods and hardware are that different in the more expensive Ray34’s though.. I would attribute the majority of the price difference to cost of manufacture... particularly labour cost, health and safety, sick pay, pensions, health care etc etc. I have a US Ray and a Sterling Ray34. There is a difference but not double the price (2021 price nearly triple).

That brings me back to the is this the golden age debate? Multi nationals churn stuff out at the cheapest cost possible.. where labour laws change and the economy grows ... margins increase and costs rise. So is Indonesia in the transitional stage that Japan was in the 80’s rapidly moving away from mass production to high tech and high-end goods? If so do the price of these instruments rise or does production move elsewhere, making the ones left on the second hand market more desirable in the future?
-
I don’t think anyone is debating that these are luthier built instruments. Just commenting on the fantastic build quality for the price paid.
-
Does anyone own or tried a Lakland Skyline (particularly a 44-64)? I am beginning to struggle a bit with thicker necks and one of these may suit me perfectly?
-
My main instrument for a while now has been a Sterling Ray34. For the price band I think the build quality is superb. I also got to try an Indonesian made G<ribute not long ago. It wasn’t a bass I would buy but only because it was a bit complex (L2000) but again fabulous instrument for the cash. This has got me thinking. Is this the golden age for Indonesian instruments much as late ‘70’s and ‘80s were for Japanese instruments and will they be future classics? The Indonesian economy is growing and over time costs will go up as labour and production costs rise so presumably the costs of the instruments made will either have to rise or the quality drop to keep pace? I have yet to try a Lakland but have to say they look amazing... maybe now is the time to get one as a keeper?

Yeah I am partly guilty of this.. a big appeal of my Hondo is it’s very aged sunburst, ridiculously large and industrial looking machine heads and the ashtray bridge cover ....
-
Is the “lawsuit” fallacy to blame for all this? Sure there was a lawsuit but not for Every Japanese maker. Has vintage MIJ been mythologised to equal better than 70’s Fender? Rather than Tokai, Greco and Burny\Fernandes made some really good instruments?
-
Sorry that’s what happens when you type on a small phone...

That’s OK I am currently trying to complete a project build that marries a Hondo2 neck to a Schecter Omen body but with Jazz. Pickups.. totally pointless ... The result of being unable to resist sub £40 items on eBay!

I had this discussion a short while back with someone who was going to pay £380ish for a (far from pristine) Squire Silver series MIJ jazz and wouldn’t have it that the MIM Squire classic vibe that was nearly the same price new was a decent buy. He was adamant that Squires now were all cheap junk and CV’s, Vintage modified etc all fit in that junk category. I had a MIJ silver series back in the day. Nothing wrong with it but nothing spectacular either....

To be fair there are some gems out there. My favourite bass is a late 70’s MIJ Hondo Professional (No sniggering at the back). It’s a 3 piece body with Dimarzio pickups bought for £28 ten years ago. Once I had stripped the lacquer off the neck ( it had been applied with a mop by the looks of it) and replaced the wiring, it is a joy to play and sounds great.

Fairly mediocre instruments from your youth are seen as desirable collectors items. Some of the prices on eBay and Gumtree for old no-brand MIJ and Korean guitars are madness. Particularly when companies like Harley Benton are nearly giving away some pretty decent instruments. For example my mate had one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174209968564 From memory it weighed a ton and the electrics sounded like trapped bees, but maybe he had a duff one?

It’s a cream colour but does vary with the light... it’s hard to photograph. P bass in Olympic White with a tort pick guard or black with a black pick guard were always my favourite. Drop in some Geezer Butlers or Custom Shop 62’s and even a ham fisted Baffoon like me can sound reasonable.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184622279614 Looks like a bargain for £900. Never understand why G&L are so under rated. If this was an ‘84 Ray!

Mexican replacement Jazz neck. £185 with Machine Heads £150 without Machine Heads Pau Ferro which I liked far more than I thought I would. Fender Highway One Machine Heads. As new condition. Neck was used with heavy gauge strings. When I restrung with a lighter gauge slight buzz on A string (small bit of silver tape in nut on A resolved this) but replacement nut may be preferred if you will be using lighter gauge strings. Socially distanced collection preferred but can send at buyer’s risk. Note will not be dispatched with Hermes....

Nearly new and only played a couple of times. Finding P bass necks aggravate my RSI so will be selling a few items on here. Specs: Genuine Fender Mexican replacement body. Olympic White, tort pick guard, EMG Geezer Butler pickups, Gotoh Bridge. Mexico quality control overall good but a little drill happy in the neck pocket- have filled though didn’t need to as nothing visible when neck attached. If anyone wants any better photos please ask. Can post also open to trades with cash on top from me. Looking to buy a PJ with Jazz width neck.
