1. Thanks for highlighting these - been really enjoying the whole faux-70's thing recently but hadn't come across them. Kadavar & Horisont are two of my fave's at the mo. Been really wanting to do a similar style band recently but with female vox (like a heavier Jefferson Airplane) but I've already got two bands on the go & don't think I could manage another!
2. No for me. Most bands that I know get a lot of their tone from their amps & whilst I agree that computers have got a lot better recently, it's still not the same. Plus the whole image thing is just ridiculous, but I'll leave it at the music level for now.
3.
To be honest I wouldn't know ovangkol if it hit me in the face.
I would as I've been touching it daily for the last 12/13 years since I got my Warwick - that is certainly not it (It's dark, grainy & non-laquered). The light bits are obviously flamed/birdseye maple as others have said & I think Warwick call the dark bits in the middle Ekenga (or something like that). It's a really nice looking bass - another user on here (can't remember who) had a custom shop made in very similar styling, the dark wood tops with maple fingerboards just look pure class to me.
4. The guitar cabs get a bit of love because they've got some quite nice celestion speakers in them but I haven't heard the same about the bass cabs - if you're looking for a decent budget 4x10 you can't go wrong with a used Peavey 410TVX cheap, powerful & reliable.
5.
The Dublin Castle
And there was the problem - the electrics in there are woeful, everything was humming/buzzing last time we played there (fun little venue though).
6. Nice looking bass but does that mean it's had a replacement neck then?
7. I use mine in both bands; sometimes just for EQing sometimes for OD - it's great!
8. I'd go for the Fender out of the two; Ampeg are great if you want a ground-shaking all-tube monster but I see their smaller offerings as box ticking really - Fender are very good at the budget to mid range of the market. I played through a Rumble 500w at a gig the other day & it was very easy to get a nice tone out of it. A 100w combo will definitely do the job for at home & probably be fine for rehearsals/smallish gigs. It probably wouldn't have the welly for full on gigs though.
9. A P-bass, through an SVT, through a 4x10? It's going to sound pretty nice!
10. Yes - some pretty lazy selling goes on on here sometimes! The classic "You all know what this is" blurb with zero detail then rubbish or often no pictures just leaves me thinking "No Thanks". It would have to be something I really wanted at an awesome price for me to even bother with one of those. To be fair though there are some great sellers on here too.
11. TC & their Polytune range seem to be absolutely owning the tuner world at the moment; I very much like my pedal so I'd guess their clip-on is good too. It's great the clip-ons are getting better nowadays but one downside I've noticed is people using them at gigs keep forgetting to turn-down/mute their basses & guitars - I can't stand "The Tuning Song"!
12. Played The Fiddlers Elbow (somewhere in North London) with my pop/rock band last night – was one of those random 4 bands nights so wasn’t expecting much but it was actually a really great night. It’s a nice little venue; looks like it used to be a standard London corner pub but has since been converted into a music venue – nice size stage, decent PA, three actually working monitors. The other bands were all of a similar genre whilst all being different enough to keep things interesting & all played great sets to a high standard. This was our first gig in the current line-up & I think we performed well, I made a couple of slips but nothing terrible and as the audience won’t have known our songs I doubt they will have noticed anyway. All in all a good time was had. Well, until my train broke down at Paddington & made me nearly an hour late getting home but I won’t let typical GWR behaviour ruin the night.
13. Good to know thank you - I'm having a hard enough time deciding which cabs to get, all these finish option from tks are almost enough to bring a man to tears. Going to have to pop over to Bass Gear next week & try some things out.
14. Nice looking rig - I assume that's the "oxblood" grill cover? Which vinyl is it, black-on-red?
15. Not sure where the perceived negative feeling has come from - everything seemed moderately above board to me (compared to other discussions), the OP asked for reasons not go buy a micro amp & got them - the average response being that most people saw them as a sonic compromise that is balanced out for many by the portability. I don't personally know any bassists that think class-D sounds better than traditional amps but I do know a lot that use them. Discussion forums are all about people putting their opinions across - if you don't like that don't participate or start a thread stating your position & looking for agreement. For example; I could start a thread titled "Reasons for not buying a tube amp" and everyone would respond saying they're heavy & expensive, then discussion would start around whether they're worth the cost/weight which of course they may or may not be.
16. The only reason I can think of for not going micro is that they don't sound as good (IMO) - they do weigh a lot less though & the good ones do sound almost as good, just depends if almost is good enough for your personal needs. Depends on your financial situation but if you're not super hard up I'd be tempted to keep your full-tube head but sell your heavy cabs to fund the other stuff - that way later down the line if you decide micro isn't for you, you've still got the most difficult part of the rig to replace/most important piece.
17. Clearly talented so well done to her but sometimes I think too much processing ruins music - I blame Cher.
18. Had another go on one of these this week - they do the overdrive sound so well it's ridiculous, you can just start playing seemingly any random notes & they somehow come out sounding like an awesome riff - I was in the studio early so had it cranked up nice & loud, my (pop-rock) band mates arrived & didn't want to open the door because they thought some other band were in there! I see they're bolting them into a cab to make a combo now too - look pretty good (if a little spendy).
19.
If you want to hear two Tecamp XS115s in action, which will no doubt be rebadged as Eich and added to the new range in due course, I am close to you.
Thanks for the offer - I might take you up on that, just waiting for my bonus to come through then I'll be trialling lot's of cabs and giving myself some difficult decisions to make!
20. How are they selling things without a properly functioning website? People just buying on blind faith or are there dealers out there already? I'm in the market for some new cabs so maybe I'll add them to the list. I see they're at the London Bass Guitar Show, I may have to go in order to hear them, just not sure I could put up with the inevitable wall of slapping noise at these things :-/
21. I've used one at a rehearsal studios a few times; I'd say they do sound nice though you are pretty much committing to "that" sound. I actually use it in a pop/rock band so only practically using a small % of its available tones (ie keeping it clean) which it does nicely and is easy to get a good (kind of vintage-y) tone but it feels to me like it's aimed more at the over-drive market (harder rock onwards) - I've tested out this side of the amp when waiting for the others etc... and feel it's where the amp excels. It will do slight break-up to full-on fuzz very well & covers most bases inbetween. It feels like a nicely made amp & looks good though I don't really understand why they've made it rack-mountable when I'd have thought 80% of the users won't be using a rack - I think rack ears are a bit ugly if you're not using them, I would have preferred them to make the amp look nice without but have it easily converted (using detachable ears) if needed but that's just me - it's still a nice amp.
22. Music brand related clothing is never cool. Wear a band T-shirt if you must but preferably only on Friday's & even then its still debatable.
23. If you want to go down the actual amp route (as opposed to an fx/pedal & headphones); a combo of 50-100w from one of the decent manufacturers would probably do the job quite well. It depends on budget really - if it was me & I didn't already have amplification at all I would probably look at getting a cheap-ish 1x12 cab (new from a shop or used from someone on here) then get one of those little hotone bass amps. This set-up would be nice & small for in the house (and a manageable volume) then later down the line you could get a bigger head for if you wanted to do gigs/band rehearsals and still use the cab (you could also add another cab for more volume with the new head).
24. Looking good! Going to record some noodles too? I've never been able to get on with Ashdown amps in the past but they were the cheaper ones & for some reason the tubey ones are making me look at them again...
