Can you not just get an extension cab for the combo? I suppose it depends on the specific model. I'd say getting a head & 2x10 wouldn't necessarily give you more punch/power/whatever - it would depend on the head & cab. The benefits of head plus two cabs is that they're lighter than two combos and gives you more options of upgrades/changes. But saying all that, after EBS_Freak's post I'd say four combos is the only logical option really :-)
-
For exclusively home practicing does it even matter? Any combo will do, though I'd go for one with line-in and headphone out - so long as you go for a vaguely decent brand they'll all do the job.
-
I've never owned anything Mesa so can't comment on whether they're worth it or not but have you seen the handles they're using on the new lightweight 1x12 cabs? Makes other popular 1x12's look a bit silly if you ask me - whether it's enough to justify any of the extra cost I don't know but it sure makes me wish the few other manufacturers had gone down a similar route!

And People Wonder Why Guitar Shops Are Closing.....
Lw. replied to phil.c60's topic in General Discussion
Are guitar shops closing? I've not really noticed it myself. As above; it's the human element that can make or brake physical shops. It's great dealing with someone that knows what they're talking about & has a happy demeanor but there could be a million different reasons that person could be having a bad day and so is not as positive as you may have liked, thus giving you bad service & you then sharing the story. Not sure whether a fact the the store person has acne really brings much to the situation but I'd have more of a problem with the other person you spoke to on the phone (who essentially lied to you) over the weekend boy telling you how it is. BTW - I use a whirlwind cable, it's very good. I would probably go OBBM now but I bought it before I joined the forum so hadn't heard of him. -
6-String Basses | Modulus | Roscoe | Spector | Warwick - Comparison
Lw. replied to AngelDust's topic in Bass Guitars
Great video & nice playing. Another vote for the Warwick, the tone just blows the others out the water for me. I've kind of gone off their looks in recent years (favouring more "traditional" styling now) but there is just something about the sound that still works very well - I don't know what it is that's making the difference, part of me thinks it's the neck-wood's they use but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to say what is is exactly. -
That 210 is tiny! Being honest I'd say the amp probably doesn't do much for me but the cab could definitely require some further thought (if they release them in 8 ohm versions)!

@Bassmayhem - head looks good. Hopefully ordering myself something from TKS (via Bassgear) at the end of the month too. -
Genzler Amplification Magellan 800 - now released!
There's a certain little amp(quite a popular one) that actually puts out its full power(500 watts) at 11 o'clock on the master volume and after that a limiter/compressor kicks in to protect the amp but there is no increase in volume after 11 o clock just a load of compression As Alex points out what this means is people think 'wow this amp is loud and I'm not even halfway!' whereas in reality the user thinks they've got loads in reserve they are actually at the limit already. This has been happening for years and is cheeky for sure and the brand I'm talking about aren't the only ones to do this...
Interesting claims especially coming from an official (?) account of a manufacturer (and so competitor). Seems like naming the brand & showing the proof is in order to me. -
Good point. I was just wondering why it has been considered an inappropriate question.
Etiquette. It is considered an inappropriate question because it is one - the new buyer is entitled to their privacy, especially when they're trying to enjoy their new purchase. Asking for your details to be passed on is fine in such a smallish community though there's nothing compelling the original seller to do so.

I know you've said you want to be as faithful as possible but I'll make the point; 99.9% of the audience probably won't know what cabs the Foos use & even out of those that do I doubt many will care that you're using the same. It's great that you're taking such care with the details but really from a punters perspective a stack's a stack. It obviously depends on how much money you've got but if it were me I'd be focusing on buying equipment that sounds as good as you can afford then sort out the playing rather than going for a specific brand of something that he may or may not have used. Good luck with it though!

It'll work perfectly well with one cab, as others have said - use your ears. But I would certainly feel for your neighbors if you're pushing a Berg 212 to destruction in the house! It's a lot of amp for a bit of home noodling but a good amp nonetheless, you can always just play it at low volumes.

Jack Casady, isolated Somebody to Love at Winterland 1969
Lw. replied to EssentialTension's topic in General Discussion
Since this thread was started I've slowly become obsessed with Jefferson Airplane, such great music & musicianship across the band! -
I wasn't having a go - just seem to be missing what the issue is. If they'd been all "must own full Marshall valve stack & be able to solo for 15 minutes" or "Skinny jeans only" then it'd be more obvious.

Exotic tone wood you say........fender make cardboard strat.
Lw. replied to Wonky2's topic in General Discussion
Well, as the YouTube comments rightly say, cardboard and epoxy, meaning it's composite... I would imagine the glue helps with the stiffness somewhat
My thought too - it's still a fun thing for them to have done but it's a shame they didn't mention the extra work they did on the neck off camera (you can see it quite clearly when one of the people are handling it), I'd be interested to hear about that too but I guess it's less impressive than just cardboard. -
Sorry what's the problem with the ads? A bunch of young people don't want some old guy hanging out at their rehearsals and frankly it'd be weird if some old guy wanted to spend his spare time with a bunch of kids - I know I certainly wouldn't want to join a band with a group of teenagers (from a 4/5 piece rock band perspective, probably be different if it were larger groups of mixed age) - it's bad enough being in a band of roughly the same age people now but with hugely varying salaries. People are at different stages of their lives, nothing wrong with being specific about what you want.

Can't really go wrong with an the Ibanez SR basses - great quality for a budget bass. Amps wise; I would go with the biggest you can afford then just turn it down - big amps can be quiet too & offer more volume if wanted later on. Getting one with a headphone out socket is also preferable.

Zzzzombie...

I don't even take my bass to gigs anymore; too much risk of broken strings, bass wiring problems, mistakes being made etc... just take a laptop & press play for a bassline I've recorded earlier. Sometimes I don't even go, someone else can press play. Brilliant reliability & perfect tone - that's what the audience wants right?
-
I should probably add that in my world "new music" is actually "new music to me"; a lot of music I've "discovered" recently has actually been old music. There have definitely been some bad decades but there's always something good to be found if you look for it - that why I find Spotify so helpful; you can actually get into a band/album before forking out too much money (times are hard at the moment)!
-
I've found forum vibes generally change as time goes on with members leaving & new people joining so I often go through waves of posting too. Often forums become a victim of their own success & end up attracting the kind of tedious, needlessly argumentative people I really can't be bothered to deal with, but they generally get bored and move on eventually too. There are a couple of forums I've been active on & can never see myself going back to & others that I still look at but rarely post. Basschat is my current most active forum but I imagine at some point in my lifetime something else will start competing for my procrastination time.
-
Yes to both recorded & live new music. Spotify is great; easy to get your music on there, almost every taste is catered for. Live; I follow the "if you don't use it, you lose it" idea. I try to support local music nights otherwise there won't be any. A lot of the time it's absolutely rubbish but I have seen some gems in the last couple of years.

The relic'd ibanez's & the sklar Warwick look interesting in the pictures.
...and more:
Think this is my fav of the ones posted. Something a little Fodera-ish about it (not that that's why I like it), it's just appealing to me for some reason.
