A lot of the time my band record either at someone's house or hire an empty rehearsal studio for the day & take all our recording stuff along with us. With moderate standard recording equipment being available at not horrendous prices I think a lot of the bands I know do this - the results aren't perfect or necessarily as good as can be achieved in a studio with a quality engineer but they're not bad so long as one of you has an idea what they're doing. When I have used recording studios in the past it's generally been driven by the obvious factors of location & price, picking between similar ones has often been down to peer reviews or how they were like when inquiring. Have you done any competition analysis? Always good to know what your rivals are up to...
-
Of course you would - it's a free market so you can charge what you want, I'm not trying to knock you down on price - we're just discussing the used market. If it's only been a day then it's probably too soon to say which way the market is leaning, give it a month & see. Though some people seem to be in a mad rush to sell on here sometimes but that's probably a different discussion.
-
Used markets do generally slow down towards christmas - most people buy instruments for themselves (though some people do seem to have very generous partners!) but as they need to use their disposable income treating others next month it means many can't treat themselves now. As we're talking about specifics; I wouldn't necessarily say 32% off retail is a particularly great deduction for used gear, though it is moderately surprising someone hasn't low-balled you. Though saying that; considering how many people try to pass things on at zero discount at all (or compare their used price to current retail, not retail at the time), maybe the market has moved on from where my mind would traditionally value things. In terms of other places to sell; facebook groups seem to be popular at the moment (though I've never used one so don't know what else they offer).

Almost any bass head could be used for guitar, results vary & it depends on the tone you're after but most tube heads will give you something passable - I use an old solid-state head with a tube pre-amp in front of it for guitaring sometimes & it doesn't sound terrible. Your issue is going to be finding an affordable tube bass amp. The big powerful ones are horrifically expensive & the smaller ones might not have enough oomf for if you gig as a bassist - though again it depends on the type of music/general loudness of the band.
If you are using any distortion, drive or have any valve devices in your signal chain then you are getting compression of your sound anyway.
In that case I need to change my answer to "yes - all the time". Everything I play goes through a DHA tube-pre, though not always being over-driven sometimes just for EQ-ing.
-
No. I don't even know what it is/does, my amp doesn't have it build in either & I'm not much of an effects kind of player. Anyone got a good example of compression making a bassline sound better so I can judge if I'm missing out on anything?

Someone did that with a biro on the only double-bass my college had only it was made worse because they drew the frets in the wrong place!

Good points BRX - home settings are very rarely (if ever) the same as live/studio settings for me.

Forget clean - what would you look for in a filthy cab?
Lw. replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
I would be going for clean-ish cabs as you're getting your dirt from the head so any of those you suggested would be fine (though TKS is where I'm looking at the moment). But saying that I know a lot of Orange users like the sound of their matching cabs. Or you could go for a chunky Matamp cab. -
There was a thicker/wider neck option available for Warwicks a few years ago (there still might be), and if it's any wider than the 2000-ish 5-string Streamer I once picked up, it'll be like trying to strangle a giraffe one-handed...
Now we're getting mixed up between width & depth. You're talking about the broad-neck Warwicks which came with a wider fret-board for wider string spacing, I don't think they made the necks any deeper to accommodate this. I'm now not sure if the OP want a deep neck or a wide neck but I can definitely say Warwick necks of the 00's are deeper than Fender as I flick between the two all the time.
-
I can't believe just how many people play with only one hand; are you not limiting yourself a bit by just playing E,A,D & G?
-
If the seller refuses to refund you & you're stuck with it another option to try before you start pulling the neck apart would be to get a dremel with the flat disc cutting blade on it & cut a slot all the across the head of the trussrod (where it's rounded off), you may then be able to turn it with a large flat-head screw driver - I've seen people do this with cleat screws on cycling shoes & it does work on the smaller scale.

I have no idea why the word "punk" keeps being used in this thread; neither throwing fake blood over a band or even the band in question are "punk". There now I've said it twice too! The landlord is an arse, it doesn't matter how bad a band are you don't act like that (especially as he should have at least listened to them once before booking) - they should sue him, post it all over the internet and contact the local press (which it seems they're doing some of at least). If this had been my band there would have been no playing on, no being nice & very little of the venue left un-smashed.

Best Power Amp for TECH 21 Sansamp RBI preamp?
Lw. replied to BassManGraham's topic in Amps and Cabs
Depends on budget but this may suit; http://www.bassgear.co.uk/product/demeter-minnie-800d-power-amplifier/ A lot of people on here rave about their retro-looking pre+power amp & I believe this is just the power section from there. -
However, the important question is: is this technical director hot?
How dare you come into a grown man's thread & spout this rubbish! You sir, are a rogue & a bully. *slams door & storms upstairs*

That looks like a great idea; easily accessible yet well protected & still giving you useful top surface. I don't have the spare cash for custom made furniture but I definitely think I could hack up some foam & fit it in a set of 2nd hand draws - to eBay!
-
I think it very much depends on your sound/situation; for one of my bands playing pop/rock in smallish pubs around London a tiny class-d 200w amp & lightweight cab would be more than enough but I know for certain that same set-up wouldn't work for the gigs I do with my metal/hardcore band, sometimes you do just need more. Saying that, when I was younger I was playing 1k plus capacity venues with the same 300w head (plus two cheap Peavey cabs) I use now & the volume was hardly ever past 1 o'clock, anything more would have been obscene.
-
Second hand Warwick from the 00's - they have off-center/squashed D-shape necks, they're very good once you get used to it.
-
Did you collect the bass from the sellers house? If so, go back round there with the bass & tell them you want a refund, if they refuse report to ebay & take it to SSC - people are not allowed to sell duds unless stated in the advert that it has a problem.
-
Rock with a Fender bass & using a pick; it'd be rude not to get an Ampeg head wouldn't it? Though you could probably get away with an Orange too...
-
Same here - my musical knowledge & ability is moderately decent, can pick out melodies easily in my mind then when I open my mouth it's like I'm listening to an entirely different piece of music that is inevitable flat. Have you tried singing lessons? I imagine only a couple would make a big difference but at the moment, for me, it'd just be too cringe-worthy to even attempt.
-
I wonder if they contacted all the buyers of the troubled amps & offered them replacements knobs? I would assume they had most people's addresses from the warranty cards most brands ask you to send back to them - seems odd to know there's an issue with a certain model but to sit on it & wait to see who kicks up a fuss. And to all the sexism BS, meh - pretty tedious really, I only saw one mildly sexist comment so reported it but it's hardly enough to derail the thread for, some people are too touchy.
-
If you believe in wood types affecting tone, the logical next step would be to believe the extra mass in a 5/6 strings' neck making some kind of difference. I can't say I've ever noticed a tonal difference between 4 & 5 string basses of the same model though.
-
What's happening to the necks? And what are you storing/transporting the bass in? Build quality & fit/finish obviously varies between brands and build locations but I can't really see a chunk of maple being bolted on to a Mexican Fender being any weaker than a chunk of maple bolted on to an American one. Saying that, I'd vote buying a used American Standard; they're just classics & if you want a Fender nothing else will really scratch that itch.

I think it depends on the size/type of venue; for smaller ones I try to get there in time for the support bands, watch them & have a few pints. But for bigger venues & more well known acts the cost of the drinks & tickets is just so high that sometimes I'll miss the support so I can have a few reasonably priced drinks around the corner - otherwise it just turns into a ridiculously expensive evening, especially if I know they're not really my bag.
