1967 Fender p bass pick-up issue
markbass555 replied to markbass555's topic in Repairs and Technical
cheers guys for all the advice. the screws are turning ok but pick-ups are not budging at all. Will have a play around with it and see what I can do to adjust the pick-up height. Might consider dropping a set of wizards or something into it and setting the original pick ups aside. I cant ever see me selling this bass as we will grow old together as I was born in 67 as well.... so have to give it some serious consideration. Thanks again guys Dave -

1967 Fender p bass pick-up issue
It may seem obvious, but how new are the strings? The fact that it's fine below the 5th fret, suggests to me that it might not be a problem with the pickup. If it was faulty, you would expect the volume reduction to be pretty much the same no matter the where you played. How's the action? Since it's just above the 5th fret, it sounds like something might be choking off the string when you're fretting above that. It could be a high fret, or not enough relief in the neck. Does the same thing happen when you play it unplugged? If the pickup does need a rewind, Andy at Wizard Pickups is your man. A rewound pickup will certainly affect the value in the eyes of a collector, though I'd guess it's relative to how original/pristine the rest of the bass is.
Hi , Strings are brand new and the bass sings like a bird when played unplugged the whole way up the neck Dave -
Guys, I have a totally original 67 p bass which i absolutely adore but has started to develop a problem. The volume on the E and A string is fine all the way up the neck but on the D and G string after the 5th fret or so there is a notable decrease in volume, infact if you play them past the 7th fret or so forget it u cant hear them in the mix at all. Do you guys reckon I need the pick-ups rewound? I dont want to replace them to decrease the value of the bass and I have tried adjusting the height but after 42 years of playing they wont budge lol. Oh and for the record I have tried my lakland BG with lindys at exactly the same amp settings and didnt have any issues whatsoever! If it is the case of a rewind I was thinking of sending them to the guys at bare knuckle but will it affect the value of the bass and will this cure the problem? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
There are great but i think because they sound a bit different to a normal Jazz that could explain why people get rid of them.
Dont get me wrong I love this bass this is my second one but really gassing after a 5 string stingray...so I work on the principle of last in first out....

I have for sale a black sparkle lakland DJ4 which is in excellent condition (a few marks on the pick guard) but paint work is excellent. Also comes with gig bag. Looking for £650.00 plus delivery from northern ireland Also consider a trade for a Sandberg PM5 or perferably stringray 5. Will send pics or post pics if anyone is interested. Dont really want to part this but still kicking myself for parting my Sandberg a few months ago. Played a stringray 5 for the first earlier in the month and got bad case of gas so either would please me at the moment. Dave

HI, Putting out a feeler to see if there would be any interested parties. Thinking of selling my Sandberg California PM4 white with tort guard and Maple neck...also think may still have original white guard as well. I fitted a d-tuner to this as well. This is a cracking bass. Only mark on it is that part of the S on the Sandberg has come off...... how I have no idea. I have scaled down on my gigging and my Lakland BG, DJ4 and my Epi EB3 cover most of what I need these days so want this to go to someone that will get the use out of it. These retail at over £900.00 so get yourself a bargain!!! lol Prob looking around £625.00 plus postage. If anyones interested let me know and I will post pics tomorrow night. Comes with Sandberg gig bag I live near Belfast so prob will have to ship. LAst time I shipped to mainland was £25.00. So let me know guys. Only trade I would consider is a Lakland Skyline Decade nothing else sorry!!! +++++++++++++++++++++++NOW SOLD+++++++++++++++++++++++
I dont think anyone is saying you cant get them any more, just that Lakland aren't advertising them at the moment. looks like they cant use the Darryl Jones name so they will have to come up with another name.
Dave I to have a DJ but irs a 4 that I am going to add a P-pup to. DId you research the pick-ups? as to what would be best to use with the aero? I was going to go with the aero pick-up but still undecided.... do they not need to be a matched set? Not very well up in this sort of thing Also you just gonna rout under the scratchplate and order a blank plate and cut it to suit? Sorry for being so nosey lol DAve -
I have one of the Jacoesque ones and I think its fantastic. It knocks spots of my previously owned MIM jazz both for playability and sound. The last gig I played with it the sound man (who I had never met before) commented on how well it sounded and how it sat really well in the mix. Also attracts attention from the bass heads in the crowd. I maybe a JHS endorsed artist but IMHO the vintage icon series are great value for money.
