DMX Lights - software/interface/app ideas
DaytonaRik replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
Chamsys MagicQ - industry standard DMX lighting condole in a PC - does everything you'll ever need it to do and more besides. Free to download, runs without a licence (4 hours at one stretch IIRC) and you'll need a DMX interface. Job done. -
I've never had a band split for family reasons but I have been in bands where relocation, change of job etc have all contributed to it's demise. Take heart from everyone else's posts - you will find a new band in due course that you enjoy playing in, and take the experiences that you've learned so far (both positive and negative) and put them to good effect in your new project.

What a belting gig at Nottingham's Tap & Tumbler - great in house system well engineered and a crowd of mixed-ages that basically were up for a night of Thin Lizzy classics and wanted to be entertained. It was definitely a hot 'n' sweaty one - my gig shirt was still damp 8 hours afterwards! The punters loved my usual walk-around-the-pub during Emerald/Suicide - up on tables, outside, all makes for an entertaining evening. Think Lizzy take their usual August sabbatical to allow for family time but what a great way to sign of the first part of 2017 - looking forward to playing there again soon.

Next up for me is WASP on the Crimson Idol anniversary tour. I was toying with going to see British Lion and FM at Rock and Blues but not sure if I'm going...we'll see. I could be tempted by The Black Star Riders in July too. After that they're thick and fast - Airbourne, Inglorious, The Cadillac Three and (hopefully) Mr Big all in the space of a few weeks.
Nice one. I'm pleased that you get it. Its really hard to describe how night and day a set of customs are compared to the 215s. Not saying the 215s are bad per se, it's just that as soon as you get into the custom multi driver realm, things REALLY start to take off. Enjoy!!
It would be impossible NOT to get it once you put a set of these in your ears!!!!
Good work - I think you will notice a huge improvement in the fit and performance over the 215s. The 64s are lovely - exceptionally well made - I bought a pair of triples for my gf for the gym (she couldn't find anything to stay in here ears), she can't get enough of them.
Well - the A3s arrived and it was straight upstairs to try them with some audio - my word! It's like seeing an Imax cinema screen after watching a black and white TV. I can hear things in a mix that were just background noise before - bass lines pop out and become easy to distinguish, vocals sit pretty much in the front of the mix too. I really can't wait to try these at a rehearsal soon. Worth every single penny. I never had a problem with the fit of the 215s and the generic olives but these are something else. The Custom IEM Co turned the order around inside 2 weeks too. I've back to back tested them with my 215s and I'm not even sure I want to use those for audio either - I feel very spoiled!

I was a very early adopter of wireless IEMs but after many years of generic silicon earpieces and lately Shure SE215 IEMS, I've decided to take the plunge and go for a set of 64 Audio A3 custom fitted IEMs. Paul at Custom IEM has been excellent with his comms etc and confirmed that the A3 will suit my needs very well - I tend to have a very balanced mix, almost like an engineer's FoH mix with the bass and my lead vocals just pushed forward a touch. Now I just have to arrange for an impression and then a 3-4 week wait once I place the order

Classic Rock in pubs, is it compulsory?
DaytonaRik replied to SisterAbdullahX's topic in General Discussion
Outside of Think Lizzy I've formed a rock band with a difference - we've taken a slightly off-tangent approach of playing pop/rock tracks that have been covered (rocked up!) by other artists - The Atari's Boys of Summer, In This Moment's version of Call Me, Halestorm's version of Bad Romance, Taking Dawn's version of The Chain etc. We try and prove that a song can be played in a way that keeps it recognisable, but it's no longer a pop song! We sprinkle in a few straight ahead but not frequently played tracks too - Lita Ford's Kiss Me Deadly and Slash's Baby Can't Driver featuring Alice Cooper and Nicole Schezinger being just two There are already loads of bands doing the usual suspect 70's/80's tracks and we decided as a collective that wasn't going to the be the path we followed. Time will tell as we're out gigging from October onwards! -
My new wireless Guitar System from Xvive
DaytonaRik replied to MacDaddy's topic in Accessories and Misc
yup, still using mine, I've been using it with my basses, and a Telecaster guitar. All good. but... I brought my Epiphone TS Les Paul and Gibson MM Flying V out of retirement, and it doesn't like them. At home and rehearsals it's fine, but at gig levels the sound breaks up. Not sure why this is, as it's only the amp that gets louder.
Not so! I have the attenuation on my Audio Technica 3110 TX set to -6db when using it with hot guitar pickups such as the Seymour Duncan's fitted to my Patrick Eggle and the 498/490s fitted to my Gibson SG, but need it set to +6db when I use the same TX for my Limelight or Tokai Hardpuncher. The output from pickups will vary considerably. It's possible that those guitar pickups are at a level which is causing the break up. -

Everything back on track at TL Towers! Our stand-in deep drummer Chris took the seat and I must say I enjoy having him sat there as he's such a stickler for perfection that every signpost fill is there - gigging becomes a pleasure and I can forget about everything for a few hours as I know he'll be rock solid.

OK, this is a possibly weird question about gigging...
DaytonaRik replied to Telebass's topic in General Discussion
The g/f just isn't a big Thin Lizzy fan but she's quite looking forward to watching my generic rock covers side-project band when we start gigging in the summer -
Was going reasonably well until one guitard got a track monumentally wrong as in completely the wrong chord progression...drummer pulled his IEMs out it was so bad, and i got so distracted by the godawful noise in my IEMs I couldn't pitch the vocals. Embarrassingly bad, but not as bad as said individual continuing to play the entire track incorrectly whilst starring at him amp, hoping that this would either 1) mystically stop the train wreck emanating from his amp or 2) give divine inspiration and remind him what he should actually be playing...which just glancing at my fretting hand would have told him! He then had the nerve to pull me up for not continuing to sing!!! I'd be morotified if I hadn't realised that I was the one making such a catastrophic error!!!

Bump for our St Patrick's Day gig
I'm glad to hear that about Phil Lynott, my band want to do one of his.
Lynott's vocal style is definitely behind the beat - have a good listen to "Do Anything You Wanna Do" or "Black Rose" As a bass playing front man in a Thin Lizzy appreciation band all I can advise is that you know BOTH parts inside out, back to front and upside down otherwise once you start to think about the vocal line the bass line trips up or vice versa.

Think Lizzy may get together for a single rehearsal with everyone attending prepared and ready if we're adding a track or two to the set list but (un?)fortunately for us there hasn't been any new material written by Phil Lynott for a while

3rd gig in as many weeks and a trip to The Old royal Oak Burton upon Trent. Cracking night - loads of patch club members in and a punters 50th birthday to boot, took the wireless walks out into the streets, set up an impromptu 'B' stage with the wireless mic at the far end of the pub - loads of crowd interaction and a great time had by one and all. If people ask why we gig, get back at three in the morning and ache from the loading/unloading then this is the reason!
Oh dear ... why
This - in spades!

A double helping of top gigs for us - first of all Friday we had a gig at a new venue with a dep drummer. Although it sounds like recipe for disaster it couldn't have been further from the truth! A good crowd who were ready for every Thin Lizzy track we could throw at them, and a return booking later this year. Last night saw a return to The Greyhound in Beeston and another cracking night was to be had. The young sound tech Richard certainly knew his stuff and just like the night before, the enthusiastic crowd loved it from the first note to the last. Again, a return later in the years is penciled in After a few weeks away from the live scene over Xmas this was just the return we all wanted.

Very nice indeed. Welcome to the club! As an aside, as my Limielight is approaching it's 2nd birthday, I thought I'd post up a shot of the 'real' wear along with observations about how it compares to the relic'd wear. The first thing I noticed is that the area of undercoat that's visible is much greater in real life than the relic finish. Secondly, where the finish is worn through to the bare wood there is still had colour deeply embedded into the grain. Finally, the worn finish isn't uniform or completely smooth like the relic'd areas. None of these are complaints - just observations. The finish is quite soft unlike the super-thick polyurethane on the Tokai so it picks up bumps, bangs and scratches easily but that just adds to the character of the finish. This is especially true around the body end of where my DiMarzio clip strap rubs. Still love this bass to bits and really pleased with Mark's work.

If only other musicians were as welcoming to the potentials of this as those you work with. I've had all on getting one of our guitarists to turn down but he may be seeing the light - his amps have gone from a 100w Marshall Vintage Modern, to a 50w Victory Earl but now he's taken to using a 30w Victory Kraken - still trying to get him to use it in half-power mode! Meanwhile, guitarist #2 is a perfect example of playing at a suitable volume/tone, despite having a amp capable of volume/gain levels that can melt your face!
-
With Think Lizzy it has been Jailbreak as per Live and Dangerous, but we're changing to Solder of Fortune which became their opening track for a few tours. With a new rock covers project it's likely to be Alice Cooper's School's Out
I usually pick something on the night with my acoustic guitarist chum and we rough it out in the corridor then wing it. Someone in the audience asked where we find the time to practice ** "practice?" I said ** more down to their low standards I suspect than any innate talent or skill or indeed adherence to musical norms
This exactly - I play a semi-regular rock acoustic night with a guitarist and people have often commented favourably. I'm regularly stunned by people's low expectations...if it sounds vaguely like something they know then it's usually well received. Phil & I have often commented how good it *could* be if we actually rehearsed some of the tracks together!
