I dinged a brand new Les Paul on a table corner at a gig the first week I owned it! I'm not careless with my possessions but these things do happen. My Patrick Eggle guitar has a strap rub mark through the lacquer and stain to the bare wood which I think looks cool. My Limelight is already relic'd but I'm not fussed if extra mark/dings appear - as is already the case. Similarly my Tokai is 30 years old and has a great collection of scars. I've always thought that Fenders look good when they're a little roughed up, but Gibsons look better when pristine!

Last gig was an odd one: the band were definitely rusty but it seemed we could do no wrong despite our best efforts! I forgot lyrics, drummer had a 'mare on a new track, endings messed up. None of it mattered as every track was enthusiastically applauded by the good-sized crowd. I swear the average punter hears the original recording in their heads!

Happy new year all! Well after a short break to allow for festivities we're back blasting out Phillo's best tunes at one of our favourite venues - The Crown Inn at Heanor, Derbyshire, DE75 7AH. A late bar and a 9:30pm start for this one.

Anyone in a band with NO interpersonal issues???
DaytonaRik replied to mingsta's topic in General Discussion
we had one major blow up in June/July 2014 - I left, my replacement left them in the brown stuff in September 2014 with imminent gigs so I got invited back as a short term stand in and the four of us have never had a cross word between us since! We all chip in carrying and setting up gear, give each other enough stage and sonic space. It helps that we're all a bit older (I'm the youngest at 49) and there truly are no prima donnas in the band. -
Well - our first "lemon" of a gig. TBH We'd played the venue before and I wasn't convinced about a return - my fears proved to be valid! First set went down reasonably well but the 2nd set turned out to be a paid rehearsal. Hey ho...such is life!

The band I was a vocalist in lost their bass player and as a guitarist I could quickly step in and 'get by' for an upcoming gig - I soon released I was a much better bass player than I was a guitarist!

Guitarist obsessed with scooped tone is driving me crazy
DaytonaRik replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
Been there and sadly if they're that stubborn there's nothing you can do or say to change their mind. I voted with my feet. It's even more irritating when they insist on using "their tone" completely out of context - the guy I knew was a death/thrash metal fan and I will admit that while his sound was great in that context, it didn't really work in, for example, a Def Leppard or Pat Benatar track! -
Nonetheless there were guitarists using single coils and plenty of 'drive and break-up' - Hendrix for example.
The gain available then through the amp alone was limited compared to some the current hi-gain heads available today. And was Jimi not associated with early overdrive/distortion/fuzz units such as the Fuzz Face? Even Gary Moore would front load a Marshall 50w head flat out with a tube screamer and a Boss DS-1, especially with his Strats.

I think the difference between the two types was much more obvious before the introduction of modern hi-gain amps. Back when a JCM800 ruled the roost, a single coil guitar simply couldn't get the same drive and break-up as a humbucker shod instrument.

Think Lizzy are playing The Smithfield, Meadow Road, Derby on Sat 19th December. It's the landlord's birthday so a goodnight is in store!!!. A couple of new tracks have found their way into the repertoire too, and it all starts around 9:00pm

Ooooh - lovely! I thought it was pewter until I read the description. I really do like Mark's builds and he's a top fella to deal with too!

I'm not so bad at learning the bass lines (a lot of Lynott stuff is ridiculously easy) but the phrasing of his vocals over the bass lines often takes me a couple of weeks per tracks to get right - have a listen to Do Anything You Want To Do - that one kept me busy for far too long!

I have to be 100% honest and say that I've never knowingly listened to JP play! I have a hard time with the whole jazz/fusion thing after listening to the guitarist Alan Holdsworth. Without doubt an incredibly gifted, talented player with amazing technique but to my ears he just doesn't play things I want to hear. I can appreciate Holdswoth's talent but not the tune. I have a suspicion I would personally find the same to be true of JP

Lights suitable for pub gigs. - advice and recommendations?
DaytonaRik replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
We keep it simple - 4 x LED PAR panels - 2 each side - linked on a slow cycle fade through the colours. It's not particularly dynamic but works well enough and you don't need someone to run it for you. -
Played at Ripley's Out of Town for the first time...odd room with two pool tables dominating the centre and a corner with three sofas! A chance to debut the new Ashdown stack and all was exactly as expected - a much easier load in/out without the damned combo! Performance was ok - one of our guitarists wasn't at all well and had IV antibiotics that morning. He shouldn't really have played but he manfully soldiered through it with a few lapses but not too bad - certainly not spotted by the punters. Both sets went down well and I thought we'd escaped with not playing "Whisky in the Jar" until said guitarists started no noodle away the solo! That and 2 other encores, a happy crowd, a happy band and a happy landlady who wants us back and also to play at another venue she owns. Good stuff!

I usually associate it with Got it And Skint (again!)
-
All my photo passes - AC/DC, Metallica, Oasis, Nickelback, Def Leppard and lots of generic promoter photo ones with the band's name written in - Thunder, Quo, Level 42, Lacuna Coil + more that can't remember but these are my faves - especially the Metallica one!

The whole 'tap dancing' phrase comes from turning on/off multiple pedals for different FX/EQ settings at the same time. E.G. flange and overdrive off, chorus and mid range EQ boost on. Admittedly, guitarists are more likely to struggle on this front! Surely the sensible way to perform multiple simultaneous changes is via a midi footswitch either driving a rack mount multi effects/midi preamp or via a digital to analog switcher such as the VooDoo Lab Ground Control switch? For those who use FX, how many adjust the parameters of any given FX pedal mid-gig?

The Gods are obviously angry with you Mr Eric! We have lots of gigs in/around Derby and Nottinghamshire...have a look at the up and coming gigs on our website.

Think Lizzy are playing at a new venue for us on Saturday 5th December so head to The Out of Town in Ripley, Derbyshire DE5 3LW for a fine selection of Phil and co's top twin guitar tunes - starts around 9:15pm

I don't use any bass effects at all so a board isn't something I use. Hell, even when I played guitar in bands all of my gear was rack-mounted and midi switched...just so much easier as one foot switch changed EQ, gain, levels, amp channel and all my effects associated with that patch. I never understand guitarists (and bass players) who want to tap dance all night!

After deciding that continuing to carry my Ashdown ABM C115 combo was going to kill me, I finally got around to swapping it for a head and cab. I already had a NEO 2x10 extension cab (albeit loaded with BlueLine drivers at source) and plumped for the NEO 1x15 cab to retain my existing speaker configuration. Sound wise - it sounds like an ABM, I've not A/B'd the NEO cab/head against the combo yet but I doubt that there will be much difference. I did try my MiBass 220 into the full stack and got a reasonably close tone to the ABM head - close enough to get me out of a hole should I need to swap over. Anyway - here it is in all its glory

All done for ya - I have a six pack currently chilling on my head I'm that unstressed and cool with things!
