1. i have a Zoom B9.1ut that has switchable noise suppression - ZNR (Zoom Noise Reduction) - I would think the B3 has the same thing. Check to see if ZNR is enabled?
2. VERY nice looking bass! Happy NBD
3. I've always done it, never had any problem with 'killing' a string.
4. There's a lot of love for Cort built instruments and it seems even more for this particular model... Happy New Bass Day!
5. I can only choose one option with the poll (is that right?) and I reckon I'm stuck firmly in the 80s with my liking for chorus (hello Peter Hook!).
6. How do you set any kind of relief with that (unless the neck gets thinner towards the middle) and what happens when you want to dress the frets or replace them?
7. A string's vibrational modes don't change no matter what the gauge/tension - the nodes and antinodes are in the same places - they obviously need to be otherwise you'd have a problem with how pickup position affects tone. Lighter gauge strings are usually easier to move than heavier gauge strings and I think we all know that how someone plays (light touch versus a heavy touch) suggests what height action to go for... but I wouldn't change the relief or what height the frets are when I change my strings over from say a heavy to a lighter gauge - I'd either change the saddle heights or adapt my playing style or both. We also all know what years of playing does to a fret and again I'm not left with an unplayable instrument due to having lost several thousandths of an inch of metal here and there. I honestly believe that you're looking for a problem with Plek that doesn't exist.
8. It won't matter if the silk doesn't extend far enough down the string to be included in what's wound around the tuning peg - lots of strings don't have any silks on them at either end (like the set of Legacy nickel rounds I put on my 5 string the other week). Another option is to buy individual strings of a length to suit your needs but it's likely the more expensive way to go.
9. What he said ^^^^ I think if you have at least 1mm of height left in the frets you can have them re-crowned and you'll be fine.
10.
Am I missing something? But surely if you have a bass strung with say 90s with a relief at the 12th fret of 0.XX mm and then you switch to 105s or 110s causing your neck to become banana shaped you'd adjust the truss rod to straighten the neck to bring the relief back into the regioin of 0.XX mm. In which case the Plek profiling of the frets still stands? No? Plus what Dad says about how much difference under the fingers a small change in operating tolerances. Just because something is set up to be "ideal" in one configuration it doesn't mean it's utter rubbish the moment that configuration changes at all. It may still be perfectly acceptable at other quite different settings/set ups.
+1 to this. AFAIK the Plek machine simulates the tension you'd have when the instrument is strung to pitch and the truss rod adjusted to give the correct relief. When I change strings I try to get the relief back to where it was previously.
11. It's not uncommon to use a couple of tiny spots of superglue to hold a nut in place. You don't need much at all and a sharp whack on the side of the nut should dislodge it if needed in the future.
12. I really rate PJ Harvey's early stuff too, 'Dress' is a great song and in this video she's wearing probably one of the shortest known to woman... http://youtu.be/QySwGXrpHzw
13. Any of the hits from Siouxsie and the Banshees? Happy House? Nice instrumental intro... http://youtu.be/amR6-neQBPE
14. Did you make the nice wooden storage unit (cupboards, shelves seen in the background where the new bass is on the stand) as well Andy?
15. Looks FANTASTIC!
16. I know he was more known these days for his plastic surgery than his earlier music but I'm still sad to hear of his passing. A friend of mine once paid for a taxi ride home with Pete and Margox (Margi Clarke) from Manchester - they didn't have any cash. The next day Pete turned up at my mates house and paid him back for the taxi. A couple of weeks later my mate's mother calls him over to the TV when Dead or Alive were performing 'You Spin Me Round' on TOTP, saying something like 'Isn't that the guy who came round the house the other day?'. My mate had no idea who Pete Burns was or that he was about to become famous.
17. Very nicely done - bet you're glad now that you had the nerve to carry out a full refret. I like the signs of ageing in the body wood too, very characterful.
18. Well I got my order the other day - double pack of Legacy nickels for my 5 string and they are indeed made by Rotosound. I had a set of RS665LDN strings on previously and the Legacy strings have the same sound (at half the price) but lack the silks and the strings don't taper so much at the tuners (which makes it a little tricky persuading the B round a small tuning peg). Will definitely think about using Strings Direct again.
19.
It depends on the radius of the fretboard but I tend to go with about 2.4 mm from the top of the 17th fret to the underside of the E string and 2 mm on the G.
I go for similar string heights; I usually measure at the 12th. If you currently have the action at 4mm then it really is way too high in my opinion. Also, what sort of relief do you have in the neck at the moment? I'm surprised your tutor hasn't had a look at your bass to advise you on its setup.
20.
Yes! Just ordered a double pack of Legacy 5 string sets for £23.99 delivered!
Ditto!
21.
The old Westone Thunder 1A had a single active tone control with a huge tonal range. There was a passive tone as well, so three knobs altogether.
+1 and it's the same arrangement on the Spectrum LX (which is a PJ bass).
22. I did wonder if for critical monitoring you might have to mix on a good set of reference headphones but I reckon it'd be better money spent than buying new speakers and trying to position them correctly and tune the room acoustics. BTW you've got a repeated section of text in post #15 at the end of the main block of text, beginning "I did a test with just a 95 hz test tone... ".
23. I've no idea how small the sweet spot is in your set-up nor how far you can move your head about (before it leaves the sweet spot) so maybe speaker height is okay to within an inch or so. I also don't know how many pro engineers mix/master through headphones vs speakers (though I expect you'd want to listen to your final mix through a few sets of speakers anyway). I've only just bought myself a pair of decent open back headphones for general music listening (Sennheiser HD 558) after years of using budget brands and I'm hearing stuff in old material that's completely new to me so I can see why people do end up spending a lot of money on them when they want the ultimate studio reference headphones.
24. I've read, at least for domestic hi-fi setups, that you normally try to have the tweeters at ear level. My speakers are a bit different as they use Mission's inverted driver design where the tweeter is supposed to stay below ear level (I can't adjust my Atacama Nexus 6 stand heights in any case).
