1. I wonder if sometimes when we have (let's call it) the 'budget' option, we put more effort into getting good performance out of it; whereas when something is expensive and claimed to display great attributes we believe that it's supposed to somehow do some of the work for us (and therefore we don't try so hard)?
2. 2 PUs and that's a ramp in between them.
3. Damn you eBay for showing me other much nicer basses I can't afford ----> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-USA-Precision-Bass-P-Bass-Original-Vintage-1978-Model-Sunburst-/291075981686?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item43c57b0176
4. Looking this up it's Bocote wood, roughly as strong as Hard Maple but considerably heavier http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/bocote/ Neck dive anyone?
5. Next time you play that venue (if you do) then make it a covers set with every song about money. I'll start the ball rolling with The Beatles "Money" http://youtu.be/6vH3lBI5Arc
6. "It is a criminal offence to keep or pass on a note you know to be counterfeit. If you think a note looks dodgy you should hand it to the police." http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/oct/19/how-spot-fake-banknote
7. You want about three wraps of string around the tuning peg and on a headstock like a Fender that works out to be a length of string beyond the peg that's equivalent to about the distance between three pegs. The string should coil downwards around the peg as you wind; make sure you don't wrap a string over itself as you wind.
8. And is that a Jazz bridge cover?
9. I'd say that's a keeper
10. I'm sort of the other way round in that I congratulate myself on buying a great value item for less because I look at the content and not the label - if it plays well and sounds good then why worry that it's 'merely' a Squier?!
11. A Squier Vintage Modified or Active Deluxe or Classic Vibe Jazz bass should serve you very well.
12. Do good venues normally hand out fake £50 notes though?
13. Go back in and explain the situation. If the worst comes to the worst they'll deny it was theirs and you'll know never to play there again. If they're a typical pub they should have all of their staff checking notes of such high denomination using the usual marker pens and scanners, and the fact you've been given it means either someone's made a bollocks of it or they're passing the forgery off on you - but at least you'll know for sure if you go back to them. If they won't accept it then I'd take it to the cops and tell them where you got if from.
14. If it's an early model Tanglewood Curbow (like mine) it'll have a Mighty Mite pickup and the EQ should still be fully active with the slap switch engaged - later iterations of the Curbow are less flexible with a preset EQ contour with the slap switch on. And of course this is exactly the same beast as a Cort Curbow, just rebadged for Tanglewood. GLWTS!
15. Here's a review of that Zoom MS-60B unit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2AG3n8KVzA
16. You can boost output and do tone shaping plus a lot more with a bass effects console - Zoom units get quite a lot of love and the B2 is within budget http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-B2/dp/B000YGJ68M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1393331748&sr=8-2&keywords=zoom+b2
17. The eBay seller gwguitars looks to be Green Willy Guitars who have a Facebook page and are in fact the people who built this bass - in that case I don't know why they don't know what brand pickups they've put in the thing (unless they're recycled from another instruments). Here's their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/gwguitars.uk and this is the bass before it was finished https://www.facebook.com/gwguitars.uk/photos/a.505257546176351.1073741827.111883615513748/531470283555077/?type=1&theater
18. Must be palm muting, yeah?
19.
I don't like Jazzes with no pickguards though. I know some people think cosmetic stuff doesn't matter but I'm the one who's got to wear it.
Funny you should say that, I've added a pickguard to mine, standard Jazz size for my 4 string Squier, just had to do a little filing for the pickup aperture. For my fairly small hands the extra fraction of an inch feels more comfortable for slapping (whereas many others remove the pickguard for exactly the same reason). Good luck with the quest anyway!
20. You owe it to yourself to check this out http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/squier-deluxe-jazz-bass-v-active-5-string-electric-guitar-in-3-color-sunburst.html I have the 4 string version and love it.
21. Whenever I mess about with the harmonics on the G and working my way up towards the nut I invariably find myself trying to play 'The Star Spangled Banner' with them LOL
22.
No because after the 12th, 7th and 5th the next easiest harmonic to sound is roughly at 4th fret.
I'd nominate the 9th before the harmonic near the 4th, but that's maybe because it's right over the fret so I know exactly where to find it.
23. Unlined fretless necks I think usually have side dots at the fret positions; with lined necks I think it's usually the dots in the same place as a fretted neck.
24. Of all the double-necked basses I've seen that to my inexperienced eye looks the most manageable!
