1. SOLD. Definitely. Well, I say definitely - the chap has paid but isn't collecting till the new year. Naturally I'm putting it under the bed to keep it out of temptation's way . . . Merry Everything everyone Tim
2. Just as a conclusion to our BC competition, we also offered another plate of your choice to anyone who simply commented on the original thread with the winner picked at random by the Mods. So with no further ado, here's our second competition winner's plate - congrats to Mornats, who went with this subtle plate to complement his Squier VM Jazz - great work! Again, thanks to everyone for your interest & support - it is mightily appreciated indeed. A Very Merry Everything to all Tim
3. Will do Stuee - although there's now quite a list . . . I forgot THE MOST IMPORTANT THING when photographing: make sure the bass is cleaner than a clean thing, as every single spec of dust appears on the image as a mahoosive white blob! Seriously, 5 minutes with a cloth & a lot of huffing & puffing makes the world of difference. Happy Friday all T
4. All PMs replied too. There's now a reserve list & I'll be in touch when I have news. A How to Photograph Your Bass thread idea: well, I'd be delighted to HOWEVER I am a designer & photographer by trade, so therefore have kit that you guys *may* not have; for example, I use four studio lights when photographing a bass to give even lighting across the face plus to add a bit of highlight to the edges, which is pretty tricky to replicate using a camera phone with a bass on the dining room table, plus I shoot on a relatively high-end camera which captures exceptional detail & tones - certainly better tones than I can play! Mind you, if you've seen my outside shots then there's no artificial lighting used there. I use a long lens, to blur the background - if you have a zoom lens always shoot at the long end, because it gives a more flattering perspective & blurs the background, making your bass really stand out; I shoot in the shade, to avoid high contrast that you'd get from direct sunlight - not that we see much of that. Actually, sunlight's a big no-no - imagine taking a picture of a lady wearing a wide-brimmed hat on a sunny day - she'd look like Zorro in the pic, so an overcast day is better for a 'product' shot as it's not 'harsh' (contrasty). If you've absolutely nothing to aid with photographing your bass then I'd suggest either using the (overcast) sunlight coming in through a window or patio door & either placing your basson a stand or lying it on a table - plainest background you can find (bare wall perhaps) OR brave the elements & venture outside, place on a stand or garden table & have a play - again, a plain background works best as you want to illustrate the bass, not your lovely new water feature - plus as a rule of thumb wherever you expect to take a picture from take three steps back & zoom in - it'll give a more flattering result - & of course the beauty of digital is that you can immediately see what you've captured. Finally, whilst I'm on this podium - actually LOOK through the viewfinder (or at the screen), because whatever you are seeing with your eyes does not necessarily mean it will be recorded on film (or memory card) the same way - so look at what you're seeing through the viewfinder/on the screen. For me, the biggest piece of inspiration I ever received was being told to imagine what you see through your viewfinder (these days it would be what you see on your screen) as a framed photograph hanging on the wall. Could you improve it? Standing in a different place? Different angle? Simply, would you like the picture hanging on the wall? Yes? Hit the button; No? Why not? At the risk of shattering the illusion of being a consummate professional in a 3,000,000sqm New York-style loft, here's a quick phone pic of how I shoot inside: Just spotted my brolly is in need of medical attention - plus if you're wondering what I use to keep the bass upright, well, it's a hi-tech piece of kit called a cordless drill . . .
5. Thanks Noirbass - consider it done. I've been well & truly done . . . Ho Ho Ho!
6. @ Noirbass - thanks very much indeed - wha'duh I owe you - 10%? Good/bad news depending upon your viewpoint - I have a gent coming to collect over the weekend so it's now ON HOLD & SOLD subject to the usual blah, blah, blahs.
7. Allen keys found - there was even one in the bunch that was the correct size! How often does that happen?! Fixed now, thanks for pointing that out.
Don't suppose you know what the fretboard radius is? Also, are those straplocks or original strap pins? (this one just out of curiosity!) Cheers
Smaz - I'm afraid I don't have a clue about the neck & I can't dig anything up on t'interweb either - all I can confidently say is it's not too big! Typical Jazz really. They're strap pins, not locks, & they are different from your normal Fender 'cone' shaped ones - although they look like all the other images I've seen of Cowpoke's, but to be honest they're so small to compare to onscreen it's very hard to gauge accurately, so: @ Noirbass - if you have a second could you confirm or deny if the strap buttons are the same as yours please? I have a feeling I read somewhere that it had Schaller licensed tuners & pins . . . Cheers Tim
8. Oh. My. Gawd. Should've gone to Specsavers - got it! Thanks for eagle eyed work there. You're right - Allen keys being searched for as we speak . . .
9. Again, thanks fellas.
Is the bass knob on upside down?
Don't *think* so Noir - both sets of stacked knobs are the same so how do you mean?
10. Thanks for kind comments guys. Billy_Apple - Noirbass is quite right - well documented on, err, 'other' bass forums & even has its own Club. 22 fret neck by the way. Cheers Tim
11. *** SOLD *** Sold for £385 with collection Fender Precision Special 'Cowpoke' 1994 MIM Active - pickup blend/volume & bass/treble Transparent Crimson 4-string RH Serial No. MN422446 Hello there all, Thought I'd try this for sale pre-Christmas, in case any of you have extraordinary kind partners . . . Up for sale is my Fender 'Cowpoke' - a cracking bass which I didn't know much about until I was introduced to one & couldn't say no! However, too many basses, one wife & not enough money mean something has to give If you're not familiar with the 'Cowpoke' they are indeed genuine Fenders, despite the out of proportion headstock & other idiosyncrasies! They are relatively rare for mass-produced basses, only being produced between 1994-1996, & this is an early one, with 1994 stamped on the neck heel. It's finished in transparent red on the front & solid on the rear. It has a P & J pick-ups & has the Fender 9v active EQ with stacked volume/blend & bass/treble controls. The neck is more Jazz than Precision & measures 41mm plus it has Licensed by Schaller tuners. As far as I can tell it's totally original & unmolested in any way. It's in terrific condition for a 20-year-old bass, with a couple of very small marks as you'd expect with the only ones of note the small 'dent' on the front body above the P pick-up & the headstock decal has seen better days. I've photographed it in the studio to highlight any defects, as this lighting is VERY unforgiving. It's really lightweight at 3.4kg /7lb 7oz & is a joy to play - really REALLY smooth plus a great range of tones from the active EQ without being too over-bearing. Having read a bit about these on the interweb it seems they are held in really high regard, as although being Made In Mexico they feature USA pick-ups & electronics - although if you know different please do let me know as the interweb has a habit of talking guff. Selling due to too many basses & too little money - I suspect I'm not the only one out there! - so no trades please. I'm just outside Bedford & am pretty flexible for viewings & a noodle - I have warming beverages & mince pies on hand & love a chat about all things bass-related. I'll accept £385 COD or I will box-up in a sturdy guitar box & courier to you for £400 with payment by bank transfer or PayPal 'gift' if you can't make it to me, although naturally I'd prefer you to see with your own eyes before parting with any lolly. Don't hesitate to shout if you need any more info & Merry Everything. Cheers Tim
12. G'morning all, Thought it was about time for an update . . . Mornats - plate in production & will post a pic as soon as it's complete. Oopsdabassist - read on, this may take a while . . . Yes, Oops won by a country mile which was a chunk of luck (or, if you prefer, a vote of confidence) for him as he'd already commissioned a plate! Here's the original competition entry & winner: Which, as has been proven, was a winning design. However, Oops already had the idea for a Steampunk bass in his mind & when he did a visual of the completed bass it started to look, err, erm, shall we say 'a little busy': So I was allowed to have a little fiddle & tinker & evolved the plate design to: This was approved & produced, now being at the tender putting-it-all-back-together stage by Oops. Stoooooopidly I didn't take a shot from the front - to keep the images consistent - so all I have of the (not yet) finished article are: I'm sure once Russ has finished the build he'll post some pics up to show us the end result. Just for reference, he's what Russ's chosen plate would look like on a black P: Thanks all, Tim
13. G'Monday moanin' everyone - Well, that's pretty conclusive isn't it! CONGRATULATIONS TO Oopsdabassit YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE! I'll be in touch Oops, plus I'm sure we can sort out a plate in time for Christmas. Everyone - thank you so much for your participation. As I've always said, personalising your scratchplates won't be for everyone or for every bass, but it's a relatively cheap way to totally transform the look of a, err, mmm, 'standard' bass into something completely personal to you. Happy Scratchin'! Cheers Tim
14.
Haha, Jellyfish got a vote! Someone digs the question mark.
15. I've suggested midnight on Sunday - so it'll run for just under a week - but if Jellyfish gets in touch beforehand I'm happy to extend a couple of days to try to give him a chance. Annoyingly I can't remember what his image was, but I'd like to give him a chance if possible.
16.
IMO it's not really fair to vote until the missing image has been included. So I'm going to wait until that has been sorted out.
I have PM'd Jellyfish but I haven't had a reply. If anyone knows him please ask him to get in touch . . .
17. @Cameronj - you were always going to get a (virtual) prize with that image HaHa. Shall we say voting closes at midnight on Sunday if that's ok with everyone - winner announced here first thing on Monday morning . . .
18.
Thanks Tim - I've tweeted this thread, hoping to get many votes
Thanks so much bluejay, that's great news
