1. Thanks guys Well looking on the talkbass forum, part of what's being putting me off the vt, people said the treble is really harsh and clank. That's the last thing I want! Can that be dimmed down, or is that treble baked in?
2. Firstly, I know someone's started this thread on talkbass, but that was more of an open discussion whereas I'm seeking advice. I've just joined a new band, whose influences include pearl jam, foo fighters and alice in chains. I've decided that I want a slightly dirty sound that if needs be I can di. I've narrowed the contenders down to the vt bass di and the vmt deluxe (I like the b7k, but I play a stingray and think it would sound too metallic and raspy). I've found this video - the guy's playing the same bass as me so helps get a clearer idea - and I love this guy's sound! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_ONEaEg5JI I decided on these two specifically because my stingray is unsurprisingly bright, and while both these pedals can produce grindy sounds I want something possibly a bit warmer/vintage-y. At some point down the line I may bring in a designated heavy overdrive pedal; if I get the vt bass then maybe the darkglass vmt, if I get the vmt deluxe then maybe I bring in another darkglass pedal. I think if you could switch between 2 settings on the darkglass then I'd go for it, but unfortunately that isn't the case. So what do you guys think? Now you know everything about my gear and the kind of music I'll be playing, which would be better suited? Or is there something better suited that I'm not considering? Thanks
3. I'm looking at the little mark tube, the shuttlemax 6.2, the gk fusion 500 and the ampeg pf500.
4. I thought you could get a variety of tones from the gk - from hifi to tubey? Didn't know that about the pf500, tbf I'm not sure whether to get a 500w amp head or 800w head, might be better long term to have the extra power.
5. Yeah, the TC has a lot of bells and whistles, but it's so misleading regarding the watts - the rh450 actually has 263. It's interesting that you say the GK has too much top end. On talkbass it was the most recommended, and I'd have thought with the tube preamp you'd have been able to reign that in. Let us know how you get on with the Aguilar.
6. I'm looking for the exact same, started a thread on talkbass - http://www.talkbass.com/threads/amp-head-shoot-out.1101449/ I'm looking for something with a bit of a warmer sound, the contenders are: - The Markbass Little Mark Tube - The GK MB Fusion 500 - The Aguilar TH500 - The Ampeg PF500 Gear4music in for stock all of them, so I'm going to have to pay them a visit.
7. Thanks for all the help guys I would like to buy a load of bits and build a bass, but I'd need to pay someone to put it together. Gonna go for the american standard.
8.
http://www.stratosphereparts.com Maybe try the stratosphere and piece together your favourite bits from both models?
I was just about ton say think I'm going to get the am. standard until I saw this. Is it delivered as a box of bits? Do you know what the shipping's like?
9. This is a toughie. I really like that M@23 about it being the best p bass you'd played. There's one thing the aguilar pickup sounding good in the f bass vf-p, and there's another spending all that money on the bass ad parts only to find it doesn't song quite the same. Maybe I go with the safe bet and get the american standard - those cs60 pickups do sound epic.
10. Sorry M@23, didn't see your post before I posted. You're right, buying the standard would save me a lot of hassle, and even though I couldn't imagine selling whichever one I bought, if any unforeseen circumstances came along I would get more money back if I'd bought the american standard.
11. Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't like the nate mendel - nice neck, pickup and bridge (know it's been changed to the fender high-mass), but I HATE the slightly road worn finish (and it's actually a lot darker than car). I know it seems like I'm arguing in favour of the american special, but if I did go for it the pickup would cost £110, and the tuners (hipshot american classic HB-1) would cost £104. I was thinking of the badass III bridge but can't find anyone that stocks them, so would have to rethink that - overall that's still slightly cheaper than the am. standard. Would you rather have the benchmark of p basses, or something that's unique to you?
12. Thanks for the response Well I'm not in the habit of regularly changing basses - I've only ever owned 2 basses. I couldn't live with mystic red, if I did go with the standard it'd be in olympic white. That's a ta thought - never done that kind of thing though, how would I approach it? Would you search ebay for the right use neck, or order straight from fender?
13. Now that I've decided to sell my thunderbird on, I'm going to be getting a bit of money coming my way. So naturally, rather than doing something stupid like saving it, I'm going to buy another bass. The two contenders are: the American Standard precision, and the American Special precision. These would be the colours (Whichever i go for will have a maple fretboard, just chose that picture because the two are similar). Obviously the american standard p bass is a great bass - love the feel of the neck, the string-thru body, the cs60's pickup. I like the olympic white/tortoise shell combo, but my fave colour is candy apple red. And mystic red is nothing in comparison. If it was a stock american special then it would be a no-brainer, I know a lot of people think it's just filling a price-gap. I currently I play a stingray, which has a thick neck. I really like both thick and thin necks, but the american special's thin, jazz-like neck shape could make for a nice change. The pickup's ok, but was thinking of putting in the Aguilar AG 4P-60 pickup. I love the f bass vf-p, and if it's good enough for that then it's definitely good enough for this. I'd swap the bridge out for a bad-ass III. I think I'd swap out the tuners too, don't know what for yet though. And like I've already said, I love car! Here's a video of the vf-p to give you an idea of how the pickups sound - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDe_CBfW3-A. To anyone who is a member on both, I have already put this up on talkbass. I'm just curious to see what the responses will be on here. So there you have it - would you go for the industry standard, the benchmark by which all other p basses are judged, OR would you go for something a little different? I'd be very interested in which you'd pick and why. Thanks
14. Bass and girlfriend envy lol
15. Thanks for the help. Hadn't previously encountered a bitcrusher, if I'm honest not at all a fan.
16. Yeah you need to try the grade A basses, the nordstrand big singles are brilliant!
17. Thanks for the advice Yeah think it's either the b3, or the boss limiter enhance, tuner and bass overdrive.
18. Just joined a new band, check them out - https://soundcloud.com/titorsinsignia. It's an originals band, they describe themselves as rock 'n roll, but I'm not sure lol. They also do a couple of covers - come together, another brick in the wall and long way to the top. I just wanted to know if there are any pedals/sounds that would suit or enhance this sound? Are there any pedals that are standardised within this genre of music? I play a stingray 4hh, and I'm using what I think is an old, beat up Ashdown ABM 410T that the band bought themselves. Would appreciate any advice, cheers
19. Seriously, if you can get one get a used sr1600. Nordie big singles and a poplar burl top. You're welcome .
20. How can anyone call this boring?!
21. Congrats! Love that blue, nearly bought one that colour once. I think, for me at least, that colour with a black pick guard would look killer!
22. Well I'm currently saving for an american standard p bass, and a bigger and better amp, and a few pedals... but after ALL that, the next bass in my sights will be a euro 5lx. I'll have a tough time choosing between green and red though lol
23. Here are the two spec lists off Spector's site (sorry about the different sized text, had to zoom out to get everything in). The first is for the rebop, the second for the euro. If I had the money I think I'd go euro, if just for some of the colours available - I think the rebop only comes in black stain, whereas emerald green and gloss black cherry are stunning!
24. Stingray!
25. Nobody else have any experience of these basses?
