1. I returned the Duality I bought due to the lack of EQ... Tonal character was just too different from my clean tone. Not interested in this one for the same reason.
2. I also had a Grand Tarkin and sold it on. I liked the tightness and focus of the fuzz but there was a certain unpleasant harshness I could never get rid of, like an emphasis on some frequency I wish I could dial out but couldn't. I reverted back to the Deluxe BBM which to my ears sounds more pleasant and musical.
3. Been away from this topic for a while... Now in a band playing with somewhat busy backing tracks, which means I better keep it simple... So my first Nano.
4.
Just gave it a quick bash! VERY thick and heavy, just like the TFR with a bit more upper mids. It can deal with me pegging the low B on my loud passive Yamaha BB, which overloads the front end of most other muffs I've tried except the TFR and BBM. Massive lows, they thump nicely too, I wouldn't need to use a blend with this. Even playing with a pick that normally sounds thin and trebly, you get a massive sub bass punch using this. One difference I noticed to the BBM, if I dig in hard on that pedal with both PJ pickups on, it produces a nice overdrive like growl. On the Russian it just sounds the same but louder and heavier, like this is your tone now and you ain't changing it! Not necessarily a bad thing either. It gets my seal of approval anyway, I'll stick it on the board for a bit and see how it fares in a full band mix!
Interesting... I've watched a few youtube comparisons with the BBM and honestly couldn't hear the difference, beyond the extra volume... keen to read other opinions here.
5. The Russian Pickle is way too expensive.
6.
http://www.fredric.c...an-sovtek-clone been out for ages, so close to the original.
I wasn't impressed by that one and stuck with my Deluxe BBM, so if it sounds like that... meh. Hopefully it will be better.
7. One more fuzz to crave 🙄 https://www.ehx.com/blog/electro-harmonix-introduces-green-russian-big-muff
8. Sold Mark a Bass Soul Food, quick and easy transaction. Recommended!
9. I have one for sale right now, I've only tested it on a loud band setting playing with fingers and in my opinion it's too mild for the tone in question. The distortion comes through much stronger with pick though so it might work, but I've only tested it that way at home.
10. Due to a sale not going through, this pedal is back up for sale. It's as new and boxed. The PSU is from EHX but it's not the one that comes with this pedal, I believe it's the one that comes with one of their digital loopers. It's actually a better switching PSU with higher draw capacity (will allow to power more pedals from it than the original one if you want), smaller and lighter and works a treat with this pedal. 12. Interested in trying the Xotic BB bass preamp, the Billy Sheehan EBS drive pedal, the Way Huge Pork Loin... That would all mean money from my end I guess... Suggest me an overdrive I may not be considering... Oh, also the TC Mini Vortex, need one of those. Hmm and the MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe while we're at it.
13. Bought this used yesterday to see what the hype was about but only needed one practice to see that it's too mild for my band's needs. It's as new and boxed with full contents including PSU. 14.
I changed my brand of strings, worked hard on my technique and then was actually able to LOWER my action!
I think technique would fix fret buzz and extraneous noises related to the right hand such as when you pluck on a too vertical angle and they hit the fretboard, but I don't think it would fix this problem since what's causing it is simply the left-hand fingers pressing down on the strings against the frets. Not much I can change about that, unless if I press them feather-like and slowly.
15.
I noticed that on the SE Bass Bash videos, John Bentley's bass is "clacking" away on almost every note. I would expect extraneous noises to disappear in the mix on a gig.
Possibly, but I'm OCD and since the other bass is fine even at home, it annoys me and I'd like to fix it
16. The strings are not touching the pickups and their height seems well set up by the Gallery (even distance to strings when I press on the last fret), but they may be evenly too high. I have to try lowering them when I have time, really busy with work + band work now. I'll report if it made a difference.
17. Yeah, these strings are actually quite old but the bass hasn't been played much so I guess they're still sounding relatively new... Short answer is: I don't know My deluxe is active, hence why I wonder if changing pickups would help... Or maybe I could try to get an EQ pedal and cut those frequencies only, so that the whole tone doesn't go dull... Regarding pickup distances, they should actually be different than my Fender's because one is active and the other is passive. I'll try playing around with that next week, see what happens.
18. Not frustrated at all, just short answers because I'm working. Asking at The Gallery is actually a good idea that hadn't occurred to me yet (though I thought I'd go to them to do whatever fix was suggested here, if too technical for me to do myself). I can't remember before the setup as I did it very soon after buying it. No one else has ever played it since I bought it and it happens whether sitting or standing, so I don't think it's connected to height (when standing the bass is slightly lower).
19. I have never actually used it in a gig, it's just my spare and my one 5-string bass when I want to try something on it. But at home the sound is quite loud through my rig (not too bad unplugged). Yes, turning down treble helps, had tried it, but only if I do it to an extent that my tone gets completely muffled and dull, so that's not the solution.
20.
You're hitting the strings too hard with your right hand. If you can't lighten up on your RH technique you'll have to raise the strings.
It's not fret buzz, it's the 'clacking' of my left hand finger pressing the string onto the frets. There's no buzz. The sound is there even with hammer-ons.
21. Good point, no, my main bass has DR Sunbeams and this one has Fender nickel. They are supposed to be quite dark though, darker than DR, and I used them countless times on my main bass and never had this problem.
22. I don't know, just normal playing. As I said, no noise with my other bass, same strength.
