Which bass cab and amp do I need for a small studio?
dodge_bass replied to EgorI's topic in Amps and Cabs
As most have said on this thread you really don’t need to (unless you have a specific musical / personal reason) mic a cab. Much better to use a DI box that you know and love (e.g Sansamp or similar) or buy as Matt mentioned a valve preamp or head that doesn’t need a speaker load (e.g. Pft20). It’s here where it comes down to personal taste....a valve head / DI will give you a certain sound (fairly retro and warm), more modern DI’s perhaps cleaner and drier. Depends what you are recording / the sound you are aiming for. I record a range of styles so I use the valve head for dirtier warmer recordings and a different DI for cleaner more modern recordings. I should note at this point that I do a fair bit of recording at distance for various producers using only a DI and I’ve never had anyone complain / moan. I use a mic on my upright bass but never on electric. Even in pro studios in tends to be DI only (again have done a fair bit of this). Hope that helps. Ian -

Me too. It means especially if you’re tourIng you can get the sound of the bass to the sound man and then tweakk the onstage sound as you need. Also means if you have awful backline as sometime happens you still know you’ve got a good sound going out FOH. And of course if it’s getting recorded as well you can rest assured it’s a good sound

I think I might win the award (if there was one) for tiniest touring rig? Elf plus 2x8 cab and Uke bass. In fact my pedal board is almost the same size as the cab Deeply impressed but this little setup. Band isn’t too loud (folky esque stuff) and this reslly holds it own!

Sorry but I don’t think that’s enormously helpful. ‘Feeling’ something comes right at the end of the process once you’ve broken down, understood and internalised the thing you are working on. For triplets. I would suggest starting with quaver triplets and get those down - crotchet triplets are much harder. If you’ve understood quaver triplets that’s a great starting point. The Bellson rhythm book is useful but isn’t necessarily the most logically structured in terms of developing your understanding. My personal preference would always be to get a good teacher who would work with you. Feel free to PM about this.
