Does anyone actually use their B string?
Bobthedog replied to LITTLEWING's topic in General Discussion
This, exactly this. -
That assumes one does it to impress others. If I had bought the reliced Sandberg it would have been to please me, not to fool or impress others. One of my cars is a 66 plate but with a 55 plate private reg. If someone saw the car and did not know me they would just think it was a 55 plate. Not everything is done to impress others. Those that know me assume I am a douchbag anyway.

I am not sure this counts but it still makes me smile 0.40 is when a change is made. purely to bring the claps in to being on 2 and 4:

Ditto, albeit a somewhat later start date.

Loving LEAD bass! Anyone else doing this?
Bobthedog replied to PUREJOYPEOPLE's topic in General Discussion
I have just listened to your New Eyes single. Very good. -
Agreed, hence me getting rid of the Combustion; I never could get the sound I wanted. When I played the AB1 it was worlds apart, I suspect down to the pick ups and perhaps the pau ferro fret board?

My Roscoe (35') and Dingwall (37") both have a wonderful B, the best of the few guitars I have played. The Roscoe has Aquilar electronics, the Dingwall, Super Fatty pickups / Dingwall. There is, however, a significant difference when played via my BF BT2 / Glock Blue Rock and my Markbass CMD121P. PS my AB1 has a completely different sound to my old Combustion, the tone on the former being capable of being much warmer than my Combustion ever was. On the other hand we each hear sound differently.

17s for me and if anything they bring the bass a little forward (to my ears). -
Very nice but not what I was expecting when I clicked here.

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Bobthedog replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
Perhaps, but I am not going to buy one without playing it. -
Question is now answered. These are the new shape Super Fatties 2. It even states it on the top left corner of the PUs.

It is actually a trick caused by perspective. The neck has a really nasty twist in it and is approx 6" wide! 😀

The fit etc is pretty much the same but there is a massive difference in terms of tone. This is much warmer / old school but also the available tonal variation is much broader than on the Combustion. I mainly play blues and some slow jazz and this just works. Re the colour, obviously personal choice but ever since I saw a Lee Sklar in this "Cadbury's" purple, I always wanted one. Now I have the colour and tone at the same time! Another forum has quizzed my pick ups and does not think they are Super Fattys, but FDVs or FD3s, however, so I have just eMailed Dingwall with the serial number to find out (I was actually asking for the original string type / sizes but threw that question in too)

Following a refit I am now down to three, albeit three fantastic, basses: 2011 Fender P MIA 2014 Roscoe Century Signature V 2017 Dingwall AB1 5/3

It does not appear to have been Kev;'s his was only two pickups and possibly with a Glock pre amp. There have been a number of purple ones for sale here, so possibly someone here owned it though.

I did look at the Super P on line but did not try it. Enjoy.

Thank you. I p/exched a Dingwall Combustion V which I could not get on with, even after a couple of years. This is tonally a different brute and so far (honeymoon period etc) I love it. Very dark but with a huge spread of flavour through the tone control

Thank you. It was, but I have to say looking at it in the flesh, there is no way you could tell.

Well I tried it and sadly was not blown away. in the flesh the relicing did not have the hitting power of the photos, but more importantly I could not get on with the B string compared to my 35" Roscoe and 37" Dingwall. Still struggled with the cost of the relicing too, although I now understand it is a four day process, not a couple of hours as thought.

New Mesa Walkabout-style high powered amp WD-800....and new cabs...
Bobthedog replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
I went to Bass Direct today and it seems that the WD-800 may not make it to the UK now until April. I settled for a new bass instead but will be back soonest they have one to try and perhaps buy. -
I went to Bass Direct today, which to be fair where I usually go for my guitars, however, today, was much better than expected. I traded in two now unplayed Dingwall Combustion V and a Fender Jazz Delux 4 for a new Dingwall AB1. What amazed me was just how good the trade in offer was from Mark (made before I had even suggested what I was looking for). Significantly above what I was expecting to be offered. Not only that but I was left to play three basses with no rush, standing over or pressure for as long as I needed. Very happy with the whole experience again.

Well after a couple of years looking I have finally settled on a new bass. I went to Bass Direct and spent time on three basses: Roscoe Century Standard Plus, Sandberg VS5 Masterpiece and a Dingwall AB1 5/3 with Super Fatty pickups. I came away with this: Let's face it, everyone has to own a bright purple bass at some time! Very happy here for now.

Thanks all. I will just have to see what it is like to play against my existing batch. The above video goes someway to explaining the added cost for sure.
