The greatest bass lines with the fewest notes?
Bobthedog replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
My banker would be Safe from Harm - Massive Attack (not the original - Stratus; Billy Cobham, on account of that having several fills, albeit a better tune). BABF#ABBA - three notes (I don't think there are any fills in this song) Maybe; The Time is Now - Moloko - 9 notes though and perhaps not good enough for this list but The Pixies' Where is my Mind is only 5 notes (or at least the way I play it is!) -
The question no one has asked yet...ta dah!!

It depends, are you talking about Alto or Tenor Sex? Besides I thought Sex is what the Queen keeps her coal in! -
I once saw a description of a mate on the packaging of a loaf of bread: It said Thick Cut. Well it was close enough for me.

One Amp: Glock Blue Rock; One Cab: Barefaced Big Twin II Four bass guitars I am, however, also trying to put a small lightweight rig together at the moment with a more vintage sound but cannot work out what to get without spending silly money.

Your most interesting piece of bass/musical equipment
Bobthedog replied to James Nada's topic in General Discussion
Not a famous player but my Roscoe Century Signature was built specifically for NAMM 2014. Consequently it is (to me at least) a most stunning piece to look but also a player. -
Is it up yet?
Wrong kind of blue movie.

So, what do you think brought you to the bass?
Bobthedog replied to Dazed's topic in General Discussion
Wanting a musical challenge later in life with an instrument that was different to my younger days (drums and trumpet); Cumberland Sausages for fingers and a love of music with a meaningful bass line. -
Nick, really sorry to read this and good luck with the search. Out of self interest which side of MK did this happen in. I am not too far from MK and perhaps should be even more alert to the risks.
I think where a lot of custom builds fall down is that the person commissioning the bass gets involved in all the wrong decisions, such as woods, pickups, electronics and hardware; when they should simply go to their luthier of choice and say how they want the bass to look, feel and sound and let them get on with picking the components that are going give the correct end result.
Agreed and was really what I was trying to say in "what I wanted..." but it is also about scale length, neck radius etc i.e design parameters. I went 35" (albeit off the shelf) but 34" suits me slightly better. Thankfully is was only a mildy expensive bass and I still play it as my no 1 bass.

Re the custom option, I would not go down that route unless I knew exactly what I wanted out of a bass. The risk is throwing all that coin at something that may not ultimately be right as a package. You could find yourself looking to spend money again real soon. As many have said get to some top end stores, play everything, if nothing works, then look into the custom option based on the experience of all those you have tried.

I have bough a few things from PMT Northampton and generally the service is okay. I was pissed off one day when I was trying out a new amp and cab as a newbie and the assistant grabbed the bass off me and spent the next 10 minutes showing me how good the stuff was when he played it. I did buy the kit but have not been back since. If I am going to buy, I am going to play, irrespective of how painful the noise may be to the others in the shop.
Why not list it elsewhere AND leave it up? Never know when the right person will see it.
Because this thread has had over 1,100 views and I have more than covered the potential market here. I have lost interest in having to come back every 36 hours to bump the thread.

Extended Length Bass Strings - Where do you buy them?
Bobthedog replied to Mwoit's topic in Bass Guitars
Bassdirect?
Yup, they carry them. I picked up a set last weekend -
Cream; a Benny Goodman small band or Oscar Peterson or of that ilk. Post Modern Jukebox at a push.
Nice. Like you, I'm after a 5 string version though. How is the East compared to the stock Fender preamp?
Thank you. I originally bought the East to help with volume issues I was having when I first got the Jazz. It has, however, a very different tone. Much more vintage and perhaps less "crisp"? Fort me it certainly is a keeper on the bass but recommend trying one if you can before buying.

For trade only; my cosseted four string 2013 Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe with fitted John East Retro Deluxe pre amp. Comes with the OEM pre amp, case and candy. I am looking for an equivalent quality / value Jazz 5 - it does not have to be Fender, What have you? The bass is immaculate with no dings but being black it does show some light swirl marks on the body. I can provide more pics to evidence the above, if needed, but only have these at the moment. Happy to deliver, within reason, so both parties can ensure they are happy to trade.
