I have never ordered a guitar on line and pedals etc usually come with a delivery day. I am quite good in those instances. I have been know to phone and complain if the day is not met, however. When I ordered my motorbike the wait from April to August that year was unbearable, especially when I saw others riding them over the summer!

Selling on Basschat, a suggestion to the MODs
Bobthedog replied to bassface2k10's topic in General Discussion
I am not fussed about any more sub-divisions but am a fan of having a minimum number of posts elsewhere on a forum before you can sell am item. There has only been one apparent fraud since I joined (was it?) but it may help minimise the risk. On a camera forum I belonged to some time ago you had to have 300 posts before you could sell. If I recall correctly there was no minimum for buying. -
Amp vibrating off cab....any cures..?

I do not know the practised answer but what about bluetak? -
Pick it up, play something very badly and put it on the stand?

These guys are great and I have been following them for some time. Sadly I could not get to any of the Euro concerts they just completed. The girl on the left is the daughter of Telly Savalas - or Kojak to us old farts.

I have an irrational feeling for buying a Musicman Stingray!
Bobthedog replied to lou24d53's topic in Bass Guitars
I went through the same GAS a couple of weeks ago. Pics posted before, but personally I cannot get tired of looking at this beauty: 2013 Stingray 5HH. Plays quite well too! Good luck with the Stingray GAS! -
2 Years playing. Not sure how well im doing
Bobthedog replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
I have been playing for a year; approx 45 mins practice every night and lessons every Saturday. I have just passed my third grade exam (all three passed at over 90%). I know my major / minor arpegios, natural minors, majors, major / minor pentatonics, blues scales and a couple of others, however, I have absolutely no music theory. and cannot learn by ear. If someone said let's play X in the key of D or similar, I would not have a clue what to do. I can read and play simple tab / score but have no chance of jamming or playing in a band at this stage. In short I feel I cannot play at all. Reading the above posts is just hugely frustrating for me. When I read other posts of people playing in bands after only a couple of months of picking up the bass I struggle to believe it based on my abilities. This is not meant as a whinge by me, but more to give a bench mark to others who think they are behind the curve. On the other hand this lady had been playing for only three years when she recorded this and ended up playing with JK in Edinburgh! I was entirely GAS free until some buffoon (joke!) posted pictures of the Torzal Twist bass at Bass Direct recently. Fortunately I have other responsibilities in the way at the moment, but they do not remove the pain of GAS!

Happy Jack, Machines and Bluejay visit Bass Direct
Bobthedog replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
I so want that Torzal Twist! Sadly I am all bassed up at the moment, but a visit to Bass Direct will be on the cards. If that is around for a while I can see a big spend weekend coming up. -
Suddenly I have an urge for a 5 string, although having tried a Squire, I did not like it all. Bizarrely I still want a 5 though and there are a couple for sale on here right now that are not helping!
For the moment, I am done with GAS!
I've got both 4s and 5s.. generally I'll go for the 5s, but as I think of them as different, not just a larger and smaller version of the same thing, I can justify owning TWICE AS MANY BASSES! Win-win!
We have a winner!

Oh well, I will have to remember that. There was silly old me thinking I could just say no if I was asked back. Alles Klar.

I have yet to gig and obviously have a lot to learn before I do so. What is the reasoning for wanting to annoy the owner / few punters? Is that not a short term play for the band?
-
There are all sorts of factors involved with the pricing: cost of top quality parts / raw materials for a low volume product; cost of manufacturing plus staff costs plus whatever margin the market will bear. For those that say if I had the money I would not spend that much, you are not thinking relatively. It is not a question of having that amount of money, but more of disposable income (also not related to salary) and priorities. Music is not the only arena with these sort of items. Will a £ 10,000 Beretta shotgun shoot better than a £ 2,000 one ? No but the wood and engraving make it a stunning item to look at.
From what I see most well known bass players don't use a text book technique...they just play
This. Not a bassist but I was watching some videos of Eric Gales yesterday. A lefty but using an upside down guitar complete with standard stringing.

Talking to my local luthier last night, who is also a photographer, he came to the conclusion that 5 vs 4 is the same as Canon vs Nikon. There is no more correct answer but it does not stop these type of threads from appearing every so often. His view, but I know I am right! :-) I also use Nikon.

I have never had this issue with the few basses I have tried, however, for me the type of strap has a big impact on bass movement. I have one neoprene strap and a couple of suede backed straps. These are all rock solid, however, the one smooth leather strap I use allows the bass to move all over the place. Body shape and size may also have some impact. Being of very large persuasion, basses tend to sit quite tight on me.

Not the biggest collection, but for the moment I am happy with this lot.
Good point - but why in that case why play a 5 string (given all the disadvantages I mentioned above?)
I don't know the answer to this, however, Doug Wimbish, Divinity Rox, Steve Lawson and Yolanda Charles do not seem to have hampered their careers by using more than 4 strings. As a newbie, I do not see the disadvantage to be honest. I am learning one specific tune for my next grade exam which is at 155bpm, mostly around the 5-8th frets of the E and A string but with some 8th notes on frets 1,2 and 3 of the E,A and D. As a learner it is a lot easier for my slow fingers to move those notes along and down one to the middle of the neck. Yes the strings are narrower at 17.5 mm compared to the 19mm of my Fenders, but this is not a major problem and practice is sorting that out. I do agree to some extent about the ultra low notes, but to blame a five string for dull bass lines seems a little harsh. I see them as an improvement a bit like the movement from wooden to graphite tennis rackets, no more difficult to play, but with a much bigger sweet spot for the right notes.
I use D'addario Chromes on my Precision - 40-100 gauge but I wanted rounds on my 5 string so I looked up the tensions of each gauge and found that the EXL165-5 string set was the closest and it enabled me to drop the string height significantly - they're 45,65,85,105,135 and feel exactly the same tension wise as the Chromes
This is a great tip, thank you and will look into a set.

I cannot find the article I read only yesterday from a studio sound engineer going all scientific on me and saying special kit was needed etc etc, but I did read it, honest. :-) My question really arose out of the fact some of the sellers on here appear to be going back to 4s as they are struggling. My only complaint with mine is the low tension strings so I may put flat wounds on it. I am used to those on my P bass, my main player at the moment.

Perhaps it is just because I have just bought one, but am I seeing more 5s for sale than usual at the moment? Are they really that hard to switch too? I am slowly getting into mine and yes it tough due to string spacing but it does not seem too hard. I have read some technical bumph about why studios do not like the B string, but why are there so many for sale? Thoughts anyone (humorous ones too are acceptable)?

I just picked this up at the weekend from another BC member. 2013 Stingray 5HH in fantastic condition It appears virtually unplayed, although it does need a set up but very happy with it. A stunner too, in my eyes:
