Don't forget, a number of us has posted more than 1 band so that'll reduce the likes returned.... Between us me and my favourite drummer in the world cheddatom have put up links for 5 bands and a studio. As I'm friends on fb with him I can see that he's liked all of the pages, but for the 6 likes that you've given to our stuff you'll only get 2 back....1 each from our personal profiles. Great thread anyhow!

^ha you posted whilst I was typing redstriper! Not sure why it doesn't count, but it definitely doesn't

Just to make people aware....if you like these pages from your own band page, then it doesn't count towards a pages total likes....you need to like it from your own personal profile for that to happen. It may well have been mentioned already, but I thought that I'd reiterate as this thread is all about getting a few extra likes on pages :-)

Is this for a final recital in your 3rd year? If it is, then Grade 8 standard isn't really going to cut it imo....Grade 8 is usually the accepted minimum standard for players at the end of their first year of a degree course. Check out Classical Thump and Amazing Grace by Victor Wooten, and as mentioned there are some existing transcriptions of Bach stuff out there. I think that a guy called Nathan Navarro has transcribed a couple of his solo bass compositions that would be at the required standard. Jaco's Donna Lee is a good one too.

My originals band: https://www.facebook.com/therebellionuk I play Bass in this one. My Blues/Funk covers band: https://www.facebook.com/bluecartelband?fref=ts I play guitar in this one, it's a new band too, so some likes will be much appreciated. Our first gig is in 6 days time :-) Some cool bands on this thread chaps!

The best party/function band I have seen
Tom Brookes Music replied to steantval's topic in General Discussion
I play 'professionaly'....music is my sole means of income, but I make most of my money through teaching. Still, I'd class myself as a reasonable player. Degree in music etc Those guys are waaaay above my standard! Quality of musicianship aside, I'm guessing that the PA and lighting rigs that they are using aren't cheap, and they'll have a few sound engineers/techies working on a gig with them. 8 grand is a lot of money, but when the agency has taken their cut and the costs have been covered (which will be a lot) I'm guessing none of them are millionaires! ......and they are so many leagues above the average band that play a vaguely in time version of Sex On Fire down at the local Dog n Duck that it's unreal. -
Matt Foy and Full Band! @ The Rigger, Newcastle-U-Lyme
Tom Brookes Music replied to VTypeV4's topic in Gigs
^ Are you the sound guy at The Rigger? If so hi dude! Long time no see, and have a nice gig! -
Fair play dude, you do far better for yourselves than we do! I'll try and make it down the next time that you're in Stoke.

A question, and apologies for a hijack.....when you booked this, did the promoter tell you that you'd have to commit to selling 30 tickets? I'd heard that this was a good venue for out of town originals bands to go and play, only to be told that my band would have to sell 30 tickets in order to play!

DR Black Beautie Strings - never again....
Tom Brookes Music replied to intime-nick's topic in Accessories and Misc
I snapped the A string on my first set and the G string on my second set, although they were reasonably old strings at that point. Currently debating what strings to go for next. I love the feel of the BB's and they look very cool! CBA breaking bass strings though....I'd gone my entire 18 year playing career without breaking one and then 2 in 6 months after switching to BB's. Of to google these Rotosound Nexus strings now! -
My new Blues/Funk covers band Blue Cartel has its first gig! It was inspired by the John Mayer Trio, so we cover a bit of their stuff....then diversified to include some funk as well as some other Blues by Hendrix, SRV, Clapton etc. I'm on guitar in this band, but the bassist is bloody brilliant! I think it's £3 on the door and we're playing a couple sets.

My last gig of 2014 is with my funk rock band The Rebellion. https://www.facebook.com/therebellionuk?ref=bookmarks Tickets are £4, should be a good night.

Allowing someone to use your bass at a gig.
Tom Brookes Music replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
Funny one isn't it. Most of my gigs on bass are on multi band nights.....frequently there'll be at least one, maybe 2 bands that are made up of 15 years old that haven't got an amp loud enough to use, my position is that no one uses my rig at all. The other week a friends band were on the bill before us and there bass player (also a friend) was struggling to get a rig to the venue for whatever reason, for him I would have made the exception as I know him, know that he wouldn't abuse my gear etc. With an actual instrument, I dunno really. My Bass has an unlaquared finish so scratches really easily, and is actually pretty battered....but they're my scratches, my wear and tear, I'd be pretty miffed if someone else gouged it! I think if someone had a tech issue mid set, as long as they hadn't acted like a twat during the evening then I'd lend them my bass. If they turn up without a bass (I've seen that happen once, then they can jog on!) We were playing a festival this summer and in the penultimate song our guitarist broke a string....he doesn't take a spare guitar to gigs so the band on after us kindly offered him a guitar so that we could finish our set....so this has made me more inclined to help out. ....and one final tale of irrelavance, back in April I got a US custom shop Strat. The day later I took it down to a friends gig (he is a very well respected blues player) so that I could hear some SRV tunes played live on it! There's few guys that I'd trust more with my gear than him though, and he's kind of been my mentor for a decade! -
SOLD: Bergantino AE112, with padded cover.
Tom Brookes Music replied to pantherairsoft's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I'll message you about it in a bit. To everyone reading this thread, please don't let my random musings put you off buying this cab! Mrs B will kill me if another £400 goes on bass gear this month, so unless Shep fancies taking my old hefty Trace Elliot rig in as part exchange then I'm an unlikely buyer!! Shep is a top guy to deal with, as you can tell from his posts above! -

That's right, my band The Rebellion: https://www.facebook.../therebellionuk and basschater cheddatom's band Dirty Money No. 5 https://www.facebook...oneyNo5?fref=ts are playing at The Box in Crewe on Friday 3rd October. It's a great sounding venue, and the headliners are a band called Trojan Horse. Should be a great night. Tickets are £5.
-
2 for me....one on guitar, one on bass.
-
As above, my band plays its biggest gig to date, headlining the excellent Sugarmill in Stoke. Tickets are a mere £4 in advance and there's 3 other bands on too. It's should be a cool night. It'd be nice to see a few basschatters there.

BigRedX, The Rigger is one of my local venues.....great place to play soundwise etc, very few people through the door though. I'll be honest the music scene around here is pretty hard work at the minute. Hardly anyone goes to see unsigned stuff anymore :-( I did mean to pop in as I saw that you were playing, ending up having a rehearsal that night though. Anyway, my gig yesterday was crap. Played at Moduska festival in Birmingham. Luckily it was in a covered marquee!!! Stage was ace P.A was ace, sound guy was pretty good, provided backline Ampeg 8x10 and a Marshall stack was nice (first time I've played through an 8x10, can't see what the fuss is about tbh). As it was a mod and ska hence Moduska festival our brand of funk rock went down like a lead balloon! Got payed in cider and kebabs. Came home and got pissed.

Hey folks, my new band are getting ready to start gigging...it's blues and funk covers, we're at the stage where we're talking about monitoring. Deal is, everyone sorts themselves out, so if you want a monitor wedge you buy it. Ditto iem. Basically I was going to go down the wired iem route with the cable gaffa taped to my guitar cable (I've seen a few guys do this and there's minimum fuss) however, I swap between two guitars regularly (yep sorry not on bass in this band!) each has it's own cable as I run them into an ab splitter on my pedal board. I don't really want anymore cables on the floor to get tangled so I'm thinking of a wireless system. I can't justify the money of a Shure system really. Has anyone any experience of the LD systems stuff? They do a back for under 250 with two sets of receivers and iem so if me and the singer bought it together it'd work out quite cheap and we could upgrade the actual earplugs over time. Thoughts? What are other people using?

Gig promoters and the "pound per head" policy
Tom Brookes Music replied to topheteatwo's topic in General Discussion
My guess would have been Retro Bar! ha -
There's a Rage-esque track in there...'Lead Sheet' by far the easiest piece in the book. How hard you find Grade 8 will depend on how good you are I guess. I can't say that I've played any RATM bass lines that are anywhere near Grade 8 standard, but then I've not played all that many.
