1.
IIRC there was someone on TalkBass who had one made. The outcome was not particularly good, although from what I remember a lot of it was down to the crapness of the luthier he chose to use. It might be worth heading over there and looking for the thread.
Cheers, will do
 2.
I would imagine the main issue here would be intonation. While fretted 8s are okay I guess if your intontation is out on a fretless 8 it'd sound pretty nasty?
That was a thought, but was just wondering if anyone had played one and can say how difficult this would be...
 3. Anyone?
 4. Does anyone make one? Has anyone tried one? I'm playing a lot of fretless at the moment in a world music band - so lots of unison riffs with Ouds with quarter-tone scales. I'm using the octave pedal quite a bit, but was thinking that having the up the octave chime could work nicely on some songs. I've seen a few relatively-budget 8-strings (ESP, Dean etc), but no fretless models. Anyone tried one? Worth experimenting with de-fretting one or are there good reasons why no-one seems to be doing them....? Cheers
 5.
Yes i know it sound stupid because it is. " just use a pick". But i was wondering has anyone come across pedals that could give such a sound. Or maybe a combination of pedals. i was thinking an envelope filter, or an eq pedal. When you listen to Flea he has loads of attack using his fingers. Any thoughts
Flea does use a pick sometimes (Parallel Universe for example) - depending on the song you're thinking of, it could just be that...
 6. Still playing my Lyte, 22 (cripes!) years on - pickups are fine, battery is fine, still loving it
 7. This would be a brilliant match for your old 'Sid' - trying desperately to find a reason to justify this... HNY Clarky
 8.
This is only a problem if the performers in question are claiming that they wrote the song rather than the person who actually did. If someone records a "chart-busting" version of your song then join the PRS and sit back and enjoy the royalties as they come in! The covers band playing your song down the pub are also paying royalties for playing your song although indirectly. The venue should have a PRS license in order to have live or recorded music playing. If the performance was logged and the band playing filled in the song sheet correctly then you may see a very small amount of money. However it is pretty much impossible to log every song from every live performance every day in the UK and then match those up with the relevant songwritters, so it doesn't happen very often.
The above is dependent on you joining the PRS first! You genereally don't need permission to record and release a song registered with the MCPS provided that it has already been released (you can't do the first released version) - however, arrangements or adaptations need permission Damages are based upon what your quantifiable loss would be - for a pub band playing your songs, that's pretty much nothing - that is if you're not a PRS member - if you are a member, then the venue should (theoretically) be paying something. But you could also (provided you've the money and inclination) apply for a court order preventing them from doing so again.

 10.
Can you provide some examples ? I have never heard of anyone being prevented from using works providing the royalties are correctly assigned. They may get sued or investigated by PRS and have to re-assign royalties, but they are not stopped from using them permanently - or am I wrong here ?
Yup - you're wrong. I think what you may be referring to is the set MCPS rate for cover versions - 8.5% (from memory) of wholesale price goes to the composer, but that's for a straight cover only - you've no right to do anything other with that song, you can't take excerpts or incorporate any other bits into something else. And that's only for songs (i.e publishing rights) - you can't do anything with recordings without the owner's permission. If you want examples, just google 'Music Sampling Law' or 'Music Law Disputes' - and remember there's no 'Fair Use' exemptions in the UK And I'm a lawyer, so please take my word for it - there are the famous sampling infringement cases (Robbie Williams v Ludlow off the top of my head) and thousands of other claims and cases that don't get reported.
 11.
Thanks for that, I understand the legal concept of copyright, but I'm not sure how that affects me or other professional composers in everyday life. I would like some real life examples of ordinary musicians preventing other people from using their works.
You can't prevent someone from using another's works in advance, but if you do so without permission they can sue you and get an injunction ordering you to stop using those works. They can also register a dispute with the PRS and prevent you from getting performance income for those works until the dispute is resolved.
 12. A couple of quick points to correct from the above; - if you're in the UK or a UK citizen, you dont need to do anything to copyright music - that happens automatically when it is recorded - and that includes notated, scribbled out or actually recorded to some device - there are international conventions that protect UK copyrights in other countries (and on the internet) - 'public domain' in relation to copyright means that the period of copyright has expired (50 yrs for a recording and 70 yrs after the composer's death for a song) and that the rights are now in the public domain (ie they don't belong to anyone) - it doesn't mean that it's simply 'out there' and released. I wrote these articles for Bass Guitar Magazine a while ago - they may be of use, but let me know if you've any questions. 13.
Seems we are going ahead, using backing tapes as the drummer and guitarists definitely cannot make it. Line-up may just be Vocals Trombone Trumpet Double bass .... err tapes Far cry from the 14-piece that played on Halloween If anyone was thinking of coming along (especially those with broken legs!), please don't feel obliged as this is such a stripped down version of the band
You've talked me out of it! Let me know when you're next Camden-way... BTW, I finally gigged your old P a coupe of weeks ago, did the job bang on. Really pleased with it Cheers Len
 14. Oof! If only it wasn't so close to Xmas! (and if only I had enough spare cash!) Have a 'that looks a bargain, will be jealous as hell of whoever gets it' bump on me!

 16. I've forwarded this link to Dan (JD73) - great, isn't it? We were at college and did many gigs together, one of my best mates. Awesome musician, and amazing bass player too. There's a JD73 appreciation thread on the Incognito Forum Will post when he's got gigs coming up... :-)
 17.
I am doing a show next month; Jesus Christ Superstar, and got the charts through on the weekend. Spent some time with them yesterday and, 'kin 'ell, they're hard to read cold. I got there in the end but, flamin' Nora. I didn't know he had it in him!!
You sure it's not his arranger...?
 18. Nice work, great line - double thumbs-up!
 19. Not sure what to call this - is it Jazz-Funk? I do like it though (even with the changes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0c38Wtdvz0...feature=related
He he..as im a youtube slag.... thought i would throw this out there...for those non jazzfunk people..maybe a bit fused with rock funk.. see i said there is more to jazzfunk...this track is killer as well as the unknown drummer...? 21.
Cant understand it when people when i hear "well i dont like it because it doesnt have the oomph of funk....well its not funk..and its not Jazz... i personally love it...im talking Lonnie Liston Smith,Ronnie Laws, Oh there is too many damn them.. good call as usual Pete..
Are you looking at me...? I prefer my funk heavy and my jazz straight, which is why I'm pretty ambivalent about 'jazz-funk'. Obviously there are exceptions (Lonnie LS being a top one), but I wouldn't think of that as 'jazz-funk'. Not sure what I would call it. Put it another way, I prefer my 'jazz-funk' to be heavy on the groove, rather than changes and choruses in a 'funky' style. (Although I've been very guilty of just that in the past! ) Never could stand Streetlife but was forced to play it enough times. Maybe that's the problem..

 23.
Have a bump for a great set-up. Only wish I'd seen this before I bought mine new a few months back. These truly are remarkable combo's, and the truly excel with upright bass. I've used mine in restaurant jazz gigs, in a theatre pit gig with no line out because it filled the room nicely, and in rehearsals and it's always held it's own.
+1. I love mine, have had it a few months now, gigged in a range of places, and only needed an extension (the 2x10 shuttle cab) when playing and rocking out with a 10-piece wedding band. And it more than held its own. It's the first bass amp I've bought in 14 years, and I still love the fact that I can carry my entire rig on my own (including extension cab!)
 24. Most Jazz-Funk I'll pass on, as it tends to have a lack of oomph / balls (which in my opinion is necessary for funk, as opposed to something being 'funky'). I'd rather listen to straight jazz then. 'A-bit-Funky-Jazz' is probably a closer description... But then you get Herbie and the Headhunters (separately and together), which I would call Jazz-Funk, and I bloody love that.
 25.
Who was the bass player on this?
Not sure - I always loved the bass playing on S&G's 'America' - beautiful melodic playing - check that too...
