1. Forever, I've been a fan of plug in and play. I know how I want to sound, know how to get that out of my gear, and the world is all at peace. Recently I've embarked upon a project that requires a little more, a stripped down originals 3 piece that seems to pull me towards a few effects. I started using my B3, with an expression pedal, but having got close to what I want I've also picked up a few dedicated effects to do a more refined job in some cases. I still intend to keep the Zoom, for the tuner, looper and for a patch of backup effects in case anything fails live, as it's easily good enough in most cases, but I currently have 3 additional pedals. So... Total noob question. Assuming I've got a big enough pedalboard/case ('cos I have), is there any advantage to me getting a proper pedalboard power supply, as opposed to my current (and free) plan to just velcro a 4 way plug adaptor on there behind the pedals? If it's definitely the way to go, any advice on pitfalls and how to do it without spending a fortune would be most welcome. Thanks in advance! Nick
2. Well... I went for a Chowny Pitchcraft and a shedload of inspiration, and I came away with both. 😊 Top marks to Chowny... with a failing battery on the contactless machine I though I might be going home disappointed, but no. 'You're on the forum aren't you?... Take it and I'll invoice you!' That's above and beyond in terms of customer service... I'll be back! It was just a blur of performance, coffee, masterclass... repeat until the Argentinian Steakhouse across the road opens! Snow Owl was brilliant, Mo Foster's band were great, Vega was soooo funky, and bloody lovely to boot. Guy Pratt was proper funny, I'd have loved him to play a little more though. The big take away for me was from Yolanda Charles. Her subdivisions thing from her masterclass will keep me frustrated for a month. I didn't touch a bass all weekend, the one I would have left with was £6,800😨... but I couldn't stop playing last night!
3. Gutted. The one thing I'd pre-justified to myself. I'll have to wait for Pitchraft madness! I hope missing out isn't such a loss for you.
4. London is much better this morning. Little if any snow overnight and a couple of degrees 'warmer'. All main roads clear, with limited ice on side roads. I'm guessing tomorrow will be better still. Heavy bass showers with occasional funky patches!
5. That's tidy! While I'd never think to go out specifically to watch that, as it's not really my 'thing', if I went somewhere and you were on I wouldn't be able to leave!
6. Space Between Your Ears - Ozric Tentacles. It wouldn't have paid me, or attracted any fame, but it'd be worth it just to know created the soundtrack for so many... erm... experiences. 😊
7. You're in trouble. I have a Beautiful Elwood L5, which I adored. So much so that I thought a Jake 5 would be useful for backup and thumpier stuff... can't remember the last time the Elwood left the house now, must be over a year... that bloody Jake is an addiction.
8. Bought a Bass Soul Food from Kevin. It couldn't have been easier. Smooth, friendly communication, and delivered to my door in no time. Thanks fella!
9. After strings for my acoustic in the only music shop in Harrow. He threw a pack of 11s on the counter... Me - have you got anything lighter? Him (with a sneer) - you mean heavier sir! Me... Bye! The shop is long gone.
10. Above, by Mad Season... the whole album. I'd bought it because of the Alice in Chains/Pearl Jam connection, but John Baker-Saunders' lines are the star, it's just an exercise in letting every individual note breathe. I recall back when it was released, it was the only non-Jazz/Fusion release that I ever saw get a 5 star review in the American Bass Player magazine. More than 20 years later it's still sublime (YMMV).
11. Does the BSF have its power supply? If so stick me in the queue!
12. Maruszczyks are rubbish for curing GAS anyway, I've got a pair but I still go twitchy everytime I see one in the marketplace.
13. Purely personal and for very different reasons... Blues Brothers Soundtrack. Complete Madness - Madness. Hejira - Joni Mitchell. Mad Season - Mad Season. Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy. Live After Death - Iron Maiden.
14. That's strange, was it something you specified? IIRC someone in this thread had was advised string trees would be fitted as the neck was made out a wood that didn't lend itself to being angled (maybe it messed up the figuring or something), but I thought they all were as standard, both mine are.
15. I think it's just their preference for a slightly shallow cut nut. My Jake headstock is angled, but no rattles and everything was fine until I played an old part with a 2nd fret bend on the A string... popped straight out. luckily it was rehearsal rather than a gig.
16. I'd hazard a guess that Shuker could sort it out too... I love the idea of the worlds first Maruszczuker!
17. The only album I have that I know for a fact is from this year is Stevie Simpson's Fair Travels and Fine Times, and I got that for free because I played on it. Other than that, like Mick I bought Gurutopia by Shez Raja at the bass show back in March, and I like it a lot.
18. Took an Alto Mixer off Pete's hands a couple of weeks ago, and it was a doddle. Easy, quick communication, told him I wasn't in a hurry but it went in the post the next day and was packed to survive an atomic blast. It's in great nick and works fine as claimed. Thanks Pete!
19. Billy Cobham on Monday... Inspiring stuff, and Tim Landers had a hell of a tone.
20.
Got a couple of questions: What is the difference between a Jake and a Jake L? Is it correct to assume a 34" scale unless otherwise stated? Thanks.
Weight I believe. L is for light. My Ewood L practically floats.
21. Do Ibanez even make a bad bass? I've no experience of the GSR but while I don't get on with the tight spacing on their 5 strings they all feel great to me. I was looking for a toe in the water fretless 5 and went for the Harley Benton Progressive. For about 130 quid I have no complaints other than that they ship it with roundwounds. One set of Fender flats and a little tweak and it's a nice instrument to play. Pretty decent range of tones too. Maybe a little noise when active is engaged if you turn the treble up... but who does that really. I only did it to test.
