1. My L5 came with a super low set up and very light strings. Playing as normal it had a fair but of buzz. As an experiment I turned my amp up and played with a much lighter touch and in the space of a fortnight totally transformed my playing... Smoother, quicker and much more dynamic control. Within a month all my basses wore a similar setup. I'm guessing it's how Adrian plays, and that's how he sends them out.
2. Papa was a Rolling Stone... sooooo much with so little!
3. Need to check the family calendar tonight, but unless there's something else I'm booked in for I wouldn't dream of being anywhere else! I've not tried their recent basses, but a friend is a dealer for them, and their guitars are beautiful. They still make a better Les Paul than Gibson for my money.
5. It practically plays itself. I can't imagine not having it. I had them build me a Jake 5 late last year, which is stunning and sounds tremendous, but sometimes I can't help but thinking I could have gone with another Elwood L5.
6.
Indeed - Delano's and yes, from BD , Poplar top by the way..
Thought so, I think it's the one I had a look around at the Bass Show... the pictures don't do it justice. It triggered a long and arduous internal discussion in my head about how much I needed 2 Elwood L5s... unfortunately for me, common sense won!
7.
I'm pleased to say that I will be taking delivery of this beauty soon ! Sadly has meant I've had to let go of my Wick Dirty Blond, but how many basses can a man play ?!!
Is that from BD?
8. As good as the live performances and masterclasses were, and as beautiful as some of the gear was, the highlight of the show was walking past Steve Lawson playing hidey with your little one... Not sure which one of them found it more amusing!
9. I love my Maruszcyzck Jake P5+. The B String is great, it just feels and sounds like all the other strings. It has a P type and a humbucker in the bridge, and I had them put a pan pot in rather than individual volume controls. Between that and a really effective tone control I find it just as flexible for my purposes as my actives.
10. Just came back to say that but you beat me to it. Saw it on FB and bagged a ticket!
11. I like that! Looks like Vulfpeck is no go. Up in the gods or stalls for more than double face value... screw that purely on principle. Oh well... I hear that Joe Dart fella's a bit rubbish anyway!
12.
Can anyone remember the name of the British( funk) band of late that were fairly minimalistic little bit like Vulfpeck?
Nope, but I'd be interested to find out.
13.
Damn - I wonder if I can fly back from my honeymoon for a gig without getting into too much trouble?!
It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission!
14. It's not my favourite, but it's where they're at... it'll have to do.
15. I'm sure it'll be fine. Last time they were here they played 500 yards from my office, and by the time I found out they'd sold out!
16.
Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out Shepherds Bush has been on sale through O2 Priority since Wednesday, just grabbed myself one.
Bugger. If the stalls have gone I'm out!
17. Tickets on sale today. Looks like from midday for Shepherds Bush, not sure for the other venues.
18. I find the 12" Radius on my Maruszcyzcks nice and easy, with no big jump when skipping strings which is always when a tighter radius will trip me up. I had a crack on one of Alan Cringean's glorious creations at the Bass Show last year which has a completely flat board, zero radius, and that was ridiculously easy to play. Obviously they're high class kit so other factors may be involved, but it instantly made me feel like a better player... unfortunately the wife didn't believe me! One day though... one day...
19. I really like his walking line tutorials. Really easy to follow, simply explained and in bitesize chunks.
20. There was a sweet old dear in the lift that asked me what was going on on the 3rd floor. I told her as the doors opened on the knitting floor. 'I'd better get off here then... my bass playing is rubbish'.
21. He was wearing a huge watch. I assume he was incorrectly curling his thumb over the top of the neck rather than placing it correctly in the centre like a proper bass player, in order to support the weight of said watch.
22. Leaving just now and the parting words from my wife were 'if you see something you can't live without and it's a good deal, just get it, we'll get by'... like I'm gonna fall for that one!
23.
If you watch the online demo from (I think) Chicago music exchange you'll see and hear that it's not just for metal! Really versatile bass that I'm lusting after too Have to say that finish is superb, you'll enjoy looking at it as much as playing it
Oh I've no doubt It'll be versatile, I was referring to the look more than anything. It's a beautiful thing, but I'd look like a tit sat in a folk venue with it playing roots & fifths.
24. I have absolutely no need for bass that is good for metal... but if I did I would want it to look exactly like that.
