1. As good as the live performances and masterclasses were, and as beautiful as some of the gear was, the highlight of the show was walking past Steve Lawson playing hidey with your little one... Not sure which one of them found it more amusing!
2. I love my Maruszcyzck Jake P5+. The B String is great, it just feels and sounds like all the other strings. It has a P type and a humbucker in the bridge, and I had them put a pan pot in rather than individual volume controls. Between that and a really effective tone control I find it just as flexible for my purposes as my actives.
3. Just came back to say that but you beat me to it. Saw it on FB and bagged a ticket!
4. I like that! Looks like Vulfpeck is no go. Up in the gods or stalls for more than double face value... screw that purely on principle. Oh well... I hear that Joe Dart fella's a bit rubbish anyway!
5.
Can anyone remember the name of the British( funk) band of late that were fairly minimalistic little bit like Vulfpeck?
Nope, but I'd be interested to find out.
6.
Damn - I wonder if I can fly back from my honeymoon for a gig without getting into too much trouble?!
It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission!
7. It's not my favourite, but it's where they're at... it'll have to do.
8. I'm sure it'll be fine. Last time they were here they played 500 yards from my office, and by the time I found out they'd sold out!
9.
Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out Shepherds Bush has been on sale through O2 Priority since Wednesday, just grabbed myself one.
Bugger. If the stalls have gone I'm out!
10. Tickets on sale today. Looks like from midday for Shepherds Bush, not sure for the other venues.
11. I find the 12" Radius on my Maruszcyzcks nice and easy, with no big jump when skipping strings which is always when a tighter radius will trip me up. I had a crack on one of Alan Cringean's glorious creations at the Bass Show last year which has a completely flat board, zero radius, and that was ridiculously easy to play. Obviously they're high class kit so other factors may be involved, but it instantly made me feel like a better player... unfortunately the wife didn't believe me! One day though... one day...
12. I really like his walking line tutorials. Really easy to follow, simply explained and in bitesize chunks.
13. There was a sweet old dear in the lift that asked me what was going on on the 3rd floor. I told her as the doors opened on the knitting floor. 'I'd better get off here then... my bass playing is rubbish'.
14. He was wearing a huge watch. I assume he was incorrectly curling his thumb over the top of the neck rather than placing it correctly in the centre like a proper bass player, in order to support the weight of said watch.
15. Leaving just now and the parting words from my wife were 'if you see something you can't live without and it's a good deal, just get it, we'll get by'... like I'm gonna fall for that one!
16.
If you watch the online demo from (I think) Chicago music exchange you'll see and hear that it's not just for metal! Really versatile bass that I'm lusting after too Have to say that finish is superb, you'll enjoy looking at it as much as playing it
Oh I've no doubt It'll be versatile, I was referring to the look more than anything. It's a beautiful thing, but I'd look like a tit sat in a folk venue with it playing roots & fifths.
17. I have absolutely no need for bass that is good for metal... but if I did I would want it to look exactly like that.
18. Piccadilly to Green Park and Number 9 from there to Olympia, or Piccalilli to Earl's Court and walk up from there, and it looks like the District is running round to High Street Kensington and it's about a 15 min walk from there... or Uber... obviously.
19. Walking from Earl's Court and High St Kensington is no big problem either. There are plenty of buses head that way too, and that early in the morning at weekends it's not the usual horrible experience... usually pretty quiet, particularly the Sunday.
20. It's worth folks checking their journeys as the tube over that way is a little screwy this weekend. The Olympia link from Earl's Court is out, as is London Overground coming from the south towards Olympia.
21. Not sure what they'll bring, but Maruszcyzck mentioned it on FB this morning.
22. It looks like Bass Direct are taking a few to the Bass Show, which might be useful for the curious.
23. My Zoom B3 is fine, and surprisingly the Korg Pitchclip I bought for emergencies is fine too.
24. Change of Heart -Cyndi Lauper. An angular, low synth bass line, not really suited to bass guitar from a fingering point of view, with a very wide uncomfortable stretch. Told the BL it was more trouble than it was worth, which he responded to by giving me a copy of a live performances with Bakithi Kumalo making it look easy... git!
