Guy Pratt - My Bass and Other Animals. Good lively read and a great bass player.
I read that earlier this year, it's a great read.

True dat! I've no doubt I will when I have access to WiFi.

I have a couple of long, dull flights coming up with a week of no Bass access in between. I need bass books (electronic) that cover approach, theory or technique that are more theoretical rather than packed with exercises that require having an instrument there to make sense of things. Alternatively, any decent bassist biographies/autobiographies. I've read Wooten's The music lesson, and despite it's weirdness found some really helpful stuff in there... similar books would be cool. Any recommendations gratefully received, cheers!

As above, an acoustic bass won't hold its own unplugged against other acoustic instruments. I almost get away with it with a gentle octave mandolin player friend of mine, but if he digs in I'm lost. I do like mine though, and with a bit of amp support it's OK... a bugger for feedback though. Bearing in mind mine is a fretless, it's wearing D'Addario Black Nylons and I really like the thump they give.

That is incredible... Ridiculous, insane, but incredible! All you need now is for ABBA to reform!

Maybe. It's really tough to predict. Given that it plunged this week chances are there'll be a bit of a rally in the short term.
Mine is 15. I am at week 4 today. <cries> At the rate the pound is plummeting I don't know if I can afford it by the time it is ready!
I ordered in August, shortly after we voted for economic and societal suicide, and given the already rising cost asked if I could pay in full. It left things a little tight at the time, but it's saved me a bit. On the upside, when we're the outcasts we're going to be, they'll be dearer and rarer.

Mine was 12, so I reckon I've about a month left... Tick... tick... tick...

Bumpage! Would also consider trades for lighter weight amplification stuff. As much as I love my old faithful 1 x 15 Trace Combo, getting down the stairs from the flat is a manual handling hazard waiting to happen, and I could probably pull together a few hundred quid to move towards a more portable option that would give me similar volume and bottom end. -
I've no particular desire to get another Lakland, but even as I'm halfway through the wait for a custom build I still find myself looking in the marketplace and thinking 'ooh, I could do something with that'. It's this damn forum, it's like a wonderful disease... I'm thinking of asking for a special account that restricts me to Theory & Technique, Events and Tutors for Hire. The sections that will actually help me improve.

Honestly fellas, that was as good as it could possibly be. Those responsible need to take a bow. Many thanks! -

It didn't work for me either, but the link on the FB event worked fine. -
No... no I'm not. My office is slap-bang next to the 02, and I'm in there for lunch most days, yet by the time I found out about it the tickets had sold out. I must start walking around with my eyes open.
Hope it goes well Nick
Thanks a lot! As luck would have it, after spending from 7:30 until midday freezing in a gown, and being prodded and poked by all and sundry, they decided (again), that they had underestimated the job, and didn't have the right kind of theatre available. So with profuse apologies I've been sent home for a second time. They wanted to try and re-schedule for next week by way of an apology, but that would mess me up for flying to Canada next month, so it looks that I'm off the hook until I come back. Bring on the bass bash... hurrah! -
I did a lot of military bases in the mid 90s, mostly in Germany, through (If I remember correctly) Satellite Entertainments, a guy named John Metcalf (again IIRC) working out of Tungelroy in the Netherlands. After a while, on the back of the German gigs we ended up doing S.H.A.P.E in Belgium, and a number of gigs over here (RAF Waddington, RAF Linton On Ouse, Catterick, Hedley Court, Edinburgh, and a number of locations around Aldershot). For the German bases we always seemed to be on with other acts from the same agency, even the DJ, so I assume a handful of agencies had it pretty much sewn up at the time. The British gigs came off the back of the German ones, People moving between bases, copping for putting on entertainment and remembering us (it's a big deal to pull of a great event for those given the task, and they're very grateful when you make that easy for them), and also recommendations between related units. Security was fairly heavy at first, but with the regular gigs once we were known, they know the van, they know what time you're coming, they know who's in the van, etc, we were usually through in 10 minutes. We were always really well looked after, fed, watered, accommodated if required, and had some fantastic times. Senior Ranks gigs can be a little stiff early on, junior ranks stuff is just carnage. A professional attitude will get you far, the guys tasked with putting the gig on have a lot of reputation riding on the outcome, and if you make it easier for them to pull off, they will go out of their way to do you favours. For example, as a result of going out of our way to help on a number of occasions and putting on a great show, we were adopted as the 'house band' for 17F Squadron (Black Knights) on RAF Brugen, they would book us for anything, and if they knew we were in the country with a day off they'd set something up. They'd take us down on the Squadron to see the Tornados, private parties for send offs, etc. If you get chance to get your foot in the door, do it. Go in and do your very best job, follow any rules you're given (you won't take any flak for misbehaving, but some poor bloke who's already got a lot on his plate will), and they will remember you for it. Also, you will never buy a drink... the notion that you would pay for a beer seemed almost offensive to them!
