1. The one ive been mulling over has gone up by about 40 quid over the last week or so... it may well be beyond me by the end of next week!
2. So tough because there's so much. For me top 3 would be Broadway the Hard Way, Sheik Yerbouti, and Man from Utopia. The 2 later compilations, Strictly Commercial and Have I offended Someone? have a pretty wide range between them, probably a good starting point.
3. Hard to believe this is still here. I've a couple of bites on 3 local sales over the weekend, if just one of them pans out I'll be on this like a fat kid on a cake!
4.
BASTARDS!!! Janice Joplin -"Another little piece of my heart" - perfume ad..
She loved to drink that stuff... she'd probably approve!
5. In no particular order, and subject to change at a moments (or great records) notice. Bruce Thomas Dennis Dunnaway Paul McCartney Michael League Lee Sklar
6. That Sadowsky had a lovely warmth to it, beautiful lows! I thought the Darkglass could have been louder. Quietly chuffed that the Zoom didn't embarrass itself in that company. Having suggested it's inclusion, out of interest more than anything, I had visions of it being nowhere near when a/bd with the real thing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I think when you own a multi, there's always that little niggle in the back of your mind that when you get chance, you need to upgrade to individual, dedicated units. Today I found that this is not necessarily the case. Thanks for your time and effort putting that on for us, and of course your most able wingman. It was a smart idea.
7. Many thanks to everyone for a great afternoon out! Looking at basses - check! Playing basses - check! Watching other people play basses - check! Talking about basses - check! Listening to other people talk about basses - check! Cake - check! Friendly faces all round - check! You pulled off another blinder Mick... bloody well done!
8.
As well as or instead of..??
Bass Bash Weekend... now you're talking!
9. Can we pull this forward to tomorrow... only I'm getting all impatient now?
10. I can't really be in a band at the moment, our kids are very young, and my wife works until 9 most evenings to reduce the burden of childcare costs during the day while I'm at work, but I still play every day, and still take pleasure from it. It's just like any other 'between bands' scenario to me, practicing and developing to increase my value to the next live project, whatever that may be. I still work on technique and repertoire, and have a couple of recording projects on the go, as I have a little network of solo artists who appreciate the value of a dedicated bass player over their own attempts... plus there's always plotting and writing for my fantasy 3 piece funky blues thing. That's been going on in between bands for years... but I might have to wait until the kids are grown and recruit them for it!
11. I've been toying with the idea of a massive rationalisation. If I can't shake the idea I might be sticking up an ad in the Marketplace for a Lakland 5501, an old German Corvette 5, a Rockbass Streamer 5 and a Bass Collection SB315. I shan't take the pi55, but I might stick one or 2 in the car if there's space.
12.
It is, on the MM Stingray 5. 34inch scale.
Thanks. Nice to know there are options.
13.
DR's DDT strings are my favourite as I prefer a heavier D and G for tonal balance. I drop the low B to A with no change in characteristics.
Just out of interest, is that on a 34 inch scale?
14. I'd never touched DRs, and always favoured heavier strings, until I got my Elwood L5 wearing Hi Beams 120-40. Now I can't imagine putting anything else on it, they're a revelation.
15. I took that same picture a a while back, and was disappointed to find out it was a theatre thing. It's a bit naughty but not in the fun way the name would suggest. It copped a lot of flack from Equity for advertising for professional dancers to work for free, despite having received a substantial arts council grant and charging pretty standard west end ticket prices. Basically, it's the theatre equivalent of gigging for exposure!
16. No experience at all, but Federico Malaman makes a bloody great sound with them!
17.
Unfortunate that they've named this service FADE.
Still, it pans out better than their 'Fender UK Experience of Design' service!
18. Bloody hell, you don't mess about putting a raffle together, do you Fella... you do know we'd still all turn up if it was all Jacob's Creek and Cadbury's Roses?
19. If I'm buying something 'serviced', to me that means that it works properly. After years of using a bigger rig I recently dug out my old Trace combo to find that years of neglect had left it crackly and horrible, with volume jumping and dropping at random. After taking it to a tech it now works exactly as it did the day I bought it 25 years ago, and if I were to sell it I would probably use the word serviced in that context.
20. My favourite kind of gig as a youngster. Accidents can happen, so leave your Sunday best at home and set up your gear wisely. We used to play a tiny place in Scarborough called the Jolly Roger IIRC, couldn't have held more than 50 people shoulder to shoulder once the gear was in, but they were blinding nights. If you were in there you were watching the band, no room to chat or sit down. Sure beer got spilled, sure people fell over, sure band space was breached, but it wasn't out of malice or lack of respect, just hi-jinks and the logistics of the whole deal. As hairy as it could be, it was engaging and exciting for everyone in the room. I'd rather take the limited risks of that kind of gig that try and win over a spacious room of folk playing fruit machines and chatting loudly about Aunt Gladys's hysterectomy.
21. I believe the Fender types are 18mm at the bridge. For what they cost the Squier Vintage Modified (VM) series are reputed to be excellent instruments. Cheap enough to experiment with.
22. Liam Gallagher moonlighting on bass for Georgia there!
23. I would also rather watch Bubinga5's cat having a 5hit. It is however pretty much guaranteed I'll be subjected to it, so if it's unavoidable I'm going to use it as an exercise in establishing the key and progression for each tune. A couple of high quality beers will help dull the pain too.
