2.
Standarad D'Addario Longscales are indeed too short (I have a Lakland 35" 55-60)
Yup! Mine is wearing XL Nickel Wound 130 - 45 Super Long, and they fit fine. In terms of tone difference I have no idea. It had these strings, through the bridge when I got it and sounded great, so I replaced like for like on the basis of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.
3. I love how he never looks like he's trying. Caught him with Judith Owen last year and he just sat there banging out beautiful lines while looking as if he was just sat noodling on the sofa... he was slightly upstaged when Derek Smalls came out for a number though... but who wouldn't be?
4. I read lots of bad things about the MK1 barts in the 55-01, but they sound great to me. I've never had a situation that they wouldn't work for. Having said that, the Haussels in my Elwood have a little something extra. Hard to quantify what it is, but they just seem a little more... punchy maybe?
5.
thanks. have you the exact info please?
Not to hand. I do have a spare pack at home though. I'll dig it out and be more specific tomorrow.
6. I've always used the Daddario Nickels in extra long. They work well with the bass for me.
7.
Maybe it's a TE thing - I used a Trace Elliot 150W head for years, never had a volume problem even through various not-top-end cabs.
Could be. I blame that damn thing for me never having had amp GAS!
8. I still have the 150w (I think) 1x15 Series 6 Trace Combo that I toured with extensively in the 90s, pubs and clubs, huge military marquees, Stadthalle in Bielefeld being the biggest venue I wound up in... PA support where it made sense obviously, but while I stuck another 15 under it for the sake of appearance I never once plugged it in, and never had a volume problem, not even close. Ymmv... etc.
9. It was a Glock in the Roxy I believe! I love the range of tones from the Delano Xtender... my Elwood has Haussels, but I'd love an L5a with the Xtender.
10. I think if you want to play something you find really interesting you often need to create that opportunity yourself, putting in the legwork to find similarly inclined people. Regarding playing something you're not keen on, either for the sake of playing or to pay the bills, why wouldn't you want to mitigate the horror by doing that an an instrument that's a joy to play?
11. A friends hubby drove them round the UK and Europe on they tour last year and said they were real gents and a joy to be around. He's done a lot of big names and doesn't throw praise around lightly. 8)
12. Dunno about avoiding religion and politics... that is easily the most offensive thing I've ever seen on the forum! ... and yet somehow I desperately want one now! :0
13.
I'm glad this topic isn't about what I first thought when I read the title!
I'm disappointed! I wouldn't look at it as an either/or decision. Two fingers is the conventional method, and for me works best for most applications, but I use 3 fingers for triplet feel stuff, and for shuffle feel tunes and a lot of the folky stuff I'll often use my thumb, index and middle fingers together, guitar style (if that makes sense). I'll use a pick from time to time too if that seems called for. Based on the material you want to play I'd weight practice towards what feels most comfortable for that kind of bass line, but would continue exercises around the other methods, so you can pull something different out of the bag if it's called for. Having a few different picking techniques is helpful with original material, as I find the lines I come up with are quite different depending on what picking style I use... gives you more to work with.

Feedback for Harry

Bought a Maruzxc... Maruszcy... Polish bass from Harry. Dead easy, stress free transaction. Prompt & friendly communication, bass in spot on condition, etc. Couldn't have been easier!
15. I think the thing is not to pin yourself down. 'Do you play fixed anchor/floating thumb/double thumb/thumb & finger, classical style/pick/no-pick?'... Yeah, all of those. As long as the right sound comes out at the end of it, something that fits for that particular tune, it doesn't matter how you do it. There are guys out there who play totally unconventionally, strings upside down and whatever... if a pleasing sound comes out of that cab... who cares. Django Reinhardt managed alright with completely knackered hands. If it's something that gives you pleasure, I'm sure you'll find a way, and it doesn't matter a jot what that way is. Proper players play with their fingers though... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4frsImhVxHs
16. Obviously it depends what you play, but don't be afraid to go down the pick route. Once you get past the snobbery there's a huge tonal pallette available down that path. You've got nothing to lose by giving it a try. I often use a 'no pick' technique, for want of a better description. With my thumb and forefinger together as if with a pick, but striking the string with the tip of my finger. Nothing to drop, can relax or stretch the hand, and can switch easily to other styles.
17.
That was a fairly standard night at Yates's in the 90's, believe me.
I don't doubt it!
18. The easiest money I ever made was a football gig. In 1996 I was playing in a 70s glam tribute, Mud, Slade, Sweet... Wigs, make-up, platform soles, etc. We mostly worked in Germany doing military balls, but at the time Yates's were doing a big 70s promotion, so we came over for a few home gigs. Yates's in Nottingham booked us for the night of the Euro 96 semi, with the plan being to show the match, then have us finish the night. They'd rented a huge TV (pretty rare and very expensive then) and set it up in front of our kit. We were there early and got everything ready so we could go on as soon as they took the screen away. The guys watched the game along with tons of punters, while I spent most of the match on the phone to my girlfriend. Then Gareth Southgate flunked his penalty! Some chimp lobbed a bottle at the screen, the bouncers tore into the crowd, and the whole place erupted into a brawl of epic proportions. The landlord shuffled us out back, paid us, and told us to tear down when it was safe. We went and grabbed a kebab, loaded the van surrounded by an army of police and walking wounded, and drove down to get the ferry to Belgium for the following night's gig.
19. I love that. At first glance it's nothing special... then you look again and it jumps out at you. Beautifully understated.
20. The BC language police are out in force! I'd fire the guy if he's not nice to be around and incapable of doing his job. I have a bassist friend who's notorious for going on drunk at festival gigs where there's a lot of waiting. While knowing it's not right, the band put up with it as alcohol effects him by making him charming and hilarious, and honestly and inexplicably turns him into a beast of a player... if only I could get away with that!
21. On his Wiki he uses the word 'dissolvement'... I'd fire him for that alone!
22.
Has anybody asked how much the fan fret option costs yet?...
Someone asked on Facebook, and they replied that they can make an Elwood 4P with Delanos for €1290.
23.
Won`t be able to make this one peoples, am gigging in Berlin that night.
As excuses go, that one's pretty cool!
24.
Meet on the ledge Fairport convention.
I'm not a blubber, but this always brings a lump to the throat, as does Who Knows Where the Time Goes. Pink Floyd's When the Tigers Broke Free is a choker too.
25. The biggest aid for me is the lyrics. I learn my parts, intro, verse, chorus, any variations, etc, then I learn the song as if I was a singer and take my cues from that... god knows what I'd do for an instrumental!
