Bump for a great bass!
-
It's a 1998 bass so things like Aerial, 50 words, directors cut I imagine with Kate Bush. I think he was house bassist at abbey rd and real world so lots of different stuff going on there including Bond soundtrack stuff.

Wow, bit of history right there

Certainly is! -
TRADES: Vintage JAZZ, MM SABRE (pref Sunburst but black is cool) Interesting and old is floating my boat right now.
Sound sample from an unfinished track so be gentle . Flatwounds, bass slightly up, treble slightly down, mid in the middle, through a MB head with VLE about halfway.

Stunning bass made for John Giblin and used on recordings and sessions with the likes of Kate Bush, John Martyn, Scott Walker and David Sylvian, among others. (comes with letter from John Giblin). If you are after a 5 string fretless with lines then this is about as good as it gets (imo.) 34 inch scale, Koa top, polyfusion pre-amp and dates from 1998. I'm not sure of the weight but it's not heavy at all and balances perfectly.
Plays beautifully with no issues. No truss rod on these models so set your action to your liking and forget about it. The neck will not move a mm. The pre is the original which I re-installed because Giblin had put a musicman pre in. He preferred the mid frequency which I think is 500hz on a MM. The ZP mid is at 330hz and is accessed through the back plate. I spoke to Joe Zon personally and he was baffled as to why he did this. Either way it's back to stock now. It has one custom designed Bartolini pup in the fretless sweet spot and sounds fantastic. Currently strung with D'addario chromes. It has the odd mark and a couple of dings when it slipped from it's case onto Kate Bush's drive after the case wasn't done up. I didn't have this repaired as you can't see it from the front and I quite liked the story/mojo. There is a fine line in the lacquer at the neck join which is purely cosmetic and was told is a common occurrence. Plays without fault. Comes with an old but functional hard case.
I'm based near Brighton and try outs are more than welcome and are preferred but I can post if required,

I love Gladys Knight. Brilliant singer. I even think her Bond theme was one of the best.

The early eighties Tokais are great and reasonably cheap. I was given one recently in pieces that I restored. It was just a project that I fancied and I didn't expect anything much but I really love it. In my case it was a jazz with p/j setup but the hard punchers sound great.

Hate to be picky but John Prine wrote it. Good song.

I stand corrected. It was shorter than saying 'the version I know as performed by Bonnie Raitt, not sure if she wrote it but she performs this song tremendously' 😂 -
Great band. Super version of this Bonnie Rait tune.

Forgot to say, even our Metal brothers and sisters may find enlightenment in this book. Lol
-
He says in the preface that he improvises with the facts. It's a great book.

Try not to revert to what you can already do. It's my worst habit to get stuck on something I can't do and then start playing something I know I can play to relieve the pressure of the task in hand...

Just finished 'But Beautiful' by Geoff Dyer. Fantastic book that is a must read for anybody remotely interested in jazz.
-
Mediums will not fit. They are for shorter scale basses. The description is confusing (was to me). Get long scale.
-
Never seen the jools clip. Nice one. This is one of my favs. Nathan East on this one I think

Dadarrio chromes are great flats. Not dull at all but without the scratchy roundwound thing.
-
Cheers all. Narural finishes are indeed back! Forgot to mention I had to move the p pup toward the neck a bit to accomodate the impossible to find pickguard. I found one which was cut for a fender blacktop jazz bass and it makes no difference to the sound.

Jeffrey Hammond.

The winner, surely.
Wasn't it Jeffrey Hammond Hammond? Legend. -
Beautiful, we need more of this over this side of the pond
-
Lovely stuff.
-
Cheers! It was a steep learning curve, especially the frets, but very rewarding.

Back from the dead. Two new pickups, two new pots, refret and a pickguard. Linseed oil finish with a wax polish. Kept everything else that was useable. Kept original jazz pup cover and tried to match it with some diy distressing on the new p pup covers. This doesn't look quite right so might bin the jazz cover. Not sure yet. Looks nothing like it would have originally but sounds great and back in the land of the living.

I would live to see him but he's not coming near me this time. £22.50 is a fair price. A mate took me to Nils Logfren last year. Nils with no band, just (a very talented) sideman £42.50!!!

Deep Purple's "Come Taste the Band". Most Purple fans hated it as there was no Richie, but I liked it and still play it from time to time now.
